Faculty Research 2026
We present a collection of 17 high-quality long-read inbred mouse strain genomes with complete annotation (contig N50s of 0.8-33.9 Mbp). This collection includes 12 widely used classical laboratory strains and 5 wild-derived strains. We have resolved previously incomplete genomic regions, including the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), defensin cluster, T cell receptor, and Ly49 complexes. Hundreds of non-reference genes from previous publications not found in GRCm39, such as Defa1, Raet1a, and Klra20 (Ly49T), were localized in the new reference genomes. We conducted a genome-wide scan of variable number tandem repeats (VNTRs) within the coding regions, identifying over 400 genes with VNTR …

The inwardly rectifying potassium channel Kir7.1 is essential for the physiological function of diverse tissues, including the retinal pigment epithelium and the gestational myometrium. Loss-of-function mutations in KCNJ13, which encodes Kir7.1, or conditional ablation of Kir7.1 in the retinal pigment epithelium, lead to early-onset vision loss. Despite strong genetic evidence supporting Kir7.1 as a therapeutic target, its regulation by endogenous ligands-beyond phosphoinositides-remains poorly understood. Here, we report cryo-electron microscopy structures of human Kir7.1 in multiple functional states at resolutions ranging from 2.8 Å to 4.0 Å. These structures uncover the molecular basis of Kir7.1 modulation by PI

Exploring Spinal Anatomic Targets For Spinal Cord Stimulation, Jp Ponce, Kevin Hines, Caio Matias
Exploring Spinal Anatomic Targets For Spinal Cord Stimulation, Jp Ponce, Kevin Hines, Caio Matias
Phase 1
Introduction: For more than 50 years, spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has been effectively employed as a surgical intervention for chronic pain management. Despite its clinical success, up to 40% of patients fail to achieve significant pain relief. Computational models have identified epidural lead positioning and the conus medullaris as potential anatomical targets influencing stimulation efficiency. Given the limited availability of clinical data on potential targets of SCS modulation, this project seeks to investigate these anatomical targets in the clinical setting.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study involving Epic charts of 105 patients who underwent SCS implantation for chronic pain …

Association Between Environmental Exposures To Perfluoroalkyl And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances And Military Veterans Cancer Determination, Stephen A. Pereira Jr
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This study involved evaluating whether cumulative exposure to perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) was associated with kidney cancer, bladder cancer, and adult leukemia among U.S. veterans. Pooled National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2005–2015 were analyzed for sample of 2,500 veterans with available serum PFAS measurements and physician-diagnosed cancer histories. This study employed a cross-sectional, correlational design grounded in a post-positivist paradigm. Inclusion required complete data for (a) serum PFAS concentrations, (b) kidney cancer, bladder cancer, and adult leukemia, and (c) covariates age, sex, race/ethnicity, smoking status, and body mass index. Cumulative PFAS was modeled as a …

Agent-Based Model Details For Quantifying Error In Drone-Based Animal Surveys: Animal Density, Distribution And Flight Patterns, Emma A. Schultz, Natasha Ellison-Neary, Landon R. Jones, Kristine O. Evans, Raymond B. Iglay
Research Data
The following dataset pertains to Python scripts of an agent-based model simulating various drone survey design and quantifying potential count bias of stationary animals in fixed landscapes as part of an accepted manuscript in Ecosphere. Simulated animals were distributed among five animal densities (n = 4, 9, 25, 49, 100 animals/survey area) and three distribution patterns (random, uniform, aggregated). Eight drone flight patterns surveyed a 4.16-km2 landscape within constraints of real-world battery and line-of-sight limitations. The simplified landscape also provided 100% animal classification (i.e., all animals within image frame observed and identified).

Book Review: We're All Traditionalists Now (Most Of The Time), Richard H. Fallon, Jr., The Changing Constitution: Constitutional Law In The Trump-Era Supreme Court, Michael Gentithes
ConLawNOW
This review highlights the scope and importance of Richard Fallon’s book, The Changing Constitution: Constitutional Law in the Trump-Era Supreme Court. Fallon, a giant of constitutional work, provides a comprehensive, accessible, and vitally important catalogue of the Court’s methodological changes in his posthumously published book. The book argues that while textualism and originalism “have achieved unparalleled prominence,” the Court is also “not consistently originalist” and often relies on a version of traditionalism, similar to but importantly distinct from originalism, that marks an important and undertheorized change. And in yet other areas, the Court eschews either originalism or traditionalism for …
