Consumption Pattern Of Poor Households In Metro Manila – A Microeconometric Evaluation, Cesar C. Rufino
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This study is an attempt to analyze through survey design-consistent consumption profiling the budget allocation pattern of urban poor in Metro Manila. Econometric models of a complete system of Engel curves for the various consumption items are to be employed in the analysis. A value-added characteristic of this research is the incorporation of the complex survey design features of the 2009 Family Income and Expenditure Survey to produce consistent and unbiased standard errors and parameter estimates used in a variety of inferences implemented.

Lean Processes Without Compromising Controls, Robyn L. Raschke, Michael T. Lee, Arti Mann
Accountancy Faculty Publications and Presentations
In today’s economic environment, governments feel the pressure to operate more efficiently, and many are therefore considering the gradual and continuous process improvement that Lean provides. Lean begins by examining a process from beginning to end, without departmental barriers; identifying the parts of the process that are inefficient; making a case for Lean improvements; and improving the process by reducing activities and waste that don’t add value to the consumer of the process.
Accounting Restatements And External Financing Choices, Xia Chen, Qiang Cheng, Alvis Lo
Accounting Restatements And External Financing Choices, Xia Chen, Qiang Cheng, Alvis Lo
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
There is little research on how accounting information quality affects a firm’s external financing choices. In this paper, we use the occurrence of accounting restatements as a proxy for the reduced credibility of accounting information and investigate how restatements affect a firm’s external financing choices. We find that for firms that obtain external financing after restatements, they rely more on debt financing, especially private debt financing, and less on equity financing. The increase in debt financing is more pronounced for firms with more severe information problems and less pronounced for firms with prompt CEO/CFO turnover and auditor dismissal. Our evidence …

Does Regulatory Scrutiny Change Investment Behavior? Evidence Of Suboptimal Portfolio Rebalancing After The Financial Crisis, Willie Dion Reddic
Does Regulatory Scrutiny Change Investment Behavior? Evidence Of Suboptimal Portfolio Rebalancing After The Financial Crisis, Willie Dion Reddic
Business Administration - Dissertations
Insurers that show losses are expected to sell tax-free securities and replace them with taxable securities since they can no longer benefit from tax savings. However, rebalancing these portfolios after the financial crisis would entail recognizing additional losses during a time period when their financial performance was under stress and their industry was under increased scrutiny. I examine portfolio rebalancing behavior using the period after the financial crisis as a proxy for increased regulatory scrutiny. I predict and find that insurers with losses subsequent to the financial crisis were less likely to increase their ratio of taxable/nontaxable securities. Insurers may …
Does Going Green Mean Losing Green? Bank Of America Vs Jpmorgan Chase, Heather Goldstein
Does Going Green Mean Losing Green? Bank Of America Vs Jpmorgan Chase, Heather Goldstein
Accounting
This research thesis is an investigation into whether companies implementing a “going green” strategy will compromise their financial performance. The primary focus was on two large financial institutions, one clearly committed to going green and the other less interested in doing so: Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase. The assessment centered on specific financial measurement points for the fiscal years of 2010 and 2011. Concern for health and wellbeing of the earth is growing exponentially, however, in order to sustain the movement it is imperative that companies join the green initiatives. Nevertheless, companies must achieve specific thresholds of financial performance …

The Liability Of Foreignness In International Equity Investments: Evidence From The U.S. Stock Market, Bok Baik, Jun-Koo Kang, Jin-Mo Kim, Joonho Lee
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Using foreign institutional ownership data in the US from 1990 to 2007, we examine whether foreign institutional investors face liabilities of foreignness (LOF) in the US stock market. We find that foreign institutional investors prefer low information asymmetry stocks more than domestic institutional investors do, and this preference for low information asymmetry stocks is particularly strong among foreign institutional investors from countries with high LOF. More importantly, we find that a change in foreign institutional ownership is negatively related to future returns, whereas this relation does not exist for domestic institutional ownership. The negative relation between the change in foreign …

Can Managerial Knowledge Of Executive Compensation Encourage Or Deter Real Earnings Management? An Analysis Of R&D Reporting Methods, Andrea Gouldman
Can Managerial Knowledge Of Executive Compensation Encourage Or Deter Real Earnings Management? An Analysis Of R&D Reporting Methods, Andrea Gouldman
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the effects of research and development (R&D) reporting method and managerial knowledge of supervisor compensation on R&D project continuation decisions. The current study employs an experiment with a 2x3 between-participants design, manipulating both R&D reporting method (expense vs. capitalize) and knowledge of supervisor compensation (control group with no knowledge vs. knowledge of non-restricted stock compensation vs. knowledge of restricted stock compensation). Using salient short-term incentives to motivate real earnings management, this study demonstrates that capitalization may result in managers foregoing economically efficient R&D investment opportunities. The results indicate that managerial knowledge of supervisor compensation structure has little …

Four different cases that have occurred within the health care industry have be analyzed in this project. It looks at the positives and negatives of each company’s internal control structure and provides suggestions for how to improve these internal controls to prevent fraud from reoccurring in …
An Examination Of Localization Success Factors Of Chinese Big Four Accounting Firms, Alexa Mcisaac
An Examination Of Localization Success Factors Of Chinese Big Four Accounting Firms, Alexa Mcisaac
Honors Projects in Modern Languages
In May 2012, the Chinese government mandated that once the Big Four accounting (KPMG, PwC, Ernst & Young, and Deloitte) joint venture agreements expire, the firms must begin to localize most of the senior management. Although most of the Big Four firms employ many locals, there are more expatriate partners than Chinese counterparts. Because of this, the Big Four firms must quickly find qualified local senior management personnel. Amongst compliance and global regulatory issues, the Big Four firms must develop a strategy for localizing. Through a survey, this study aims to examine how expatriates and local Chinese managers perceive the …
Cultural Influences On Accounting And Its Practices, Meredith Young
Cultural Influences On Accounting And Its Practices, Meredith Young
Senior Honors Theses
This thesis discusses various cultural aspects that have influenced accounting. Hofestede (1984) and Gray (1988) conducted studies and observations of the cultural dimensions and values that have contributed to culture and accounting research. National culture is broad in its influences, but affects the smallest aspects of society-even accounting. Accounting is also influenced by organizational culture, the overall environment in which a company functions. Next is ethics, an integral aspect of accounting, persuaded by the culture in which it is derived. Religion is more than a belief; it constitutes a way of life, involving unique practices and perspectives in accounting. Last, …

Accounting For Goodwill, Julie Bennett
Accounting For Goodwill, Julie Bennett
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.
Goodwill has become an increasingly larger portion of the assets transferred to a company during an acquisition. Financial statement users are now in need of better information about goodwill. This paper will ( 1) compare the prior method of accounting for goodwill to the new method of accounting for goodwill, (2) examine some of the controversies surrounding the accounting method, and (3) examine some of the effects the new accounting method has had on businesses. Goodwill has become an increasingly larger portion of the assets transferred to …

Are The Loan Loss And Fair Value Components Of Bank Income Rationally Priced?, Chu Yeong Lim, Edward Lee, Martin Walker
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
This paper examines if the market rationally prices the loan loss provisions, and the fair value gains and losses of US banks. We also model the discretionary components of loan loss provisions and fair value gains and losses, and test if the discretionary components are priced differently from their non-discretionary counterparts. We find little evidence that the market misprices operating cash flows, non-discretionary loan loss provisions, or fair value gains and losses (discretionary or otherwise). However we do find evidence of significant mispricing of discretionary loan loss provisions. This evidence remains significant even after controlling for the fact that loan …
