Increasing efforts are made to convert waste into new materials for replacing “traditional” ones. In particular urban bio-waste represents a primary source of concern for both government and society. A new type of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) have been very recently developed to convert food waste into a biodegradable multifunctional raw material to help solving the plastic waste problem. However, little is known about consumers' reactions to products made from PHA. Hence this study aims at understanding consumers' intentions to purchase, pay for, and switch to those bio-based products. Both multivariate analyses of variance and mediation analyses are run, addressing product involvement, …

Application Of The Gradient Projection Method To An Optimal Control Problem In Quantum Biology, Rashad Abdulla
Theses and Dissertations
Quantum biology is an emerging field which seeks to understand and analyze the effects of quantum mechanical phenomena on biological systems. One such phenomenon is the formation of radical pairs, compounds which exist in a quantum superposition of two states until they collapse into one or the other. The probability of the collapse into a preferred state can be calculated from the Schrödinger equation, and is in fact dependent on external magnetic fields. This project utilizes principles of mathematical optimal control and quantum biology to determine the precise sequence of magnetic field pulses that maximize the probability of achieving the …

Extreme Altitude Search And Rescue Helicopter, Matthew J. De Sieno, Anthony Chavarria, David Stuver, Zach Boss
Senior Design Project For Engineers
The goal of this design was to develop an extreme altitude rescue helicopter capable of retrieving hikers stranded on top of Mount Everest. Using the Eurocopter AS350 as a baseline, a conceptual model was produced that is fully capable of hovering and delivering forward flight at the desired altitude of 8,848 meters. Combined blade element momentum theory, proper airfoil selection, and forward flight calculations were utilized in order to optimize the rotor for the given flight conditions on top of Mount Everest. Conceptual fluid dynamics and CAD modeling aided in the process of visually designing the fuselage and rotor. Not …

Ready Mix USA, a CEMEX company, is a giant in the building materials industry, servicing the Southeastern region of the United States through various commercial and residential projects. The Atlanta Division of RMUSA currently consists of 15 operational plants in the state of Georgia with its headquarters located in Woodstock. From the years 2015 to 2018, managers at Ready Mix USA noticed a drastic increase in turnover rates of ready mix truck drivers and did not have an answer for the increasing percentages. The Continuous Improvement at RMUSA tasked the student project team from the Industrial and Systems Engineering department …

Field Service Products (FSPA) in Atlanta, GA provides Siemens Energy, Inc., with tool sets and systems used to work on Power Generation Equipment. When the FSPA receives the tool systems back from the customer, there is a window of 90 days in which the FSPA must verify that the tool systems were returned complete and operational. If the verification process happens within the 90-day window and something is missing from the system, the FSPA can bill the customer for the missing or damaged items. If the tool system is verified outside of the 90-day window, the FSPA must replace any …

Supply Chain Network Analysis For Outboard Motors At Motor Boaters Usa, Seyedalireza (Ali) Ghiasi, Chase Griffith, Djanene Manuel, Yesenia Pérez, Alvand Rafiee
Senior Design Project For Engineers
Motor Boaters USA found themselves possibly spending too much on their current network distribution of small and large outboard motors and requested new distribution alternatives for the U.S. Through past network distribution data analysis, the team devised 3 scenarios it believed would provide one or more cost effective distribution networks applicable to the request. Through what-if analysis, the teams' calculations produced solid results, which were then presented to Motor Boaters USA for reflection and possible implementation.

Equilibrium-Based Workload Balancing For Robust Emergency Response Operations In Metropolitan Areas, Parya Roustaee
Civil and Environmental Engineering Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents an equilibrium-based modeling framework for emergency response (ER) workload balancing to achieve robust operation in large-scale metropolitan areas. The problem is formulated as a non-linear mathematical program (NLP), which determines the optimal workload cutoff for each ER station such that the weighted sum of the area-wide expected response time and its variation are minimized. The concept of Marginal Cost of Uncertainty (MCU) is introduced to measure the impact of a station’s workload increase on the area-wide service performance. The solution of the NLP is proved to be equivalent to a state of equilibrium in which all stations …

An Aco-Inspired, Probabilistic, Greedy Approach To The Drone Traveling Salesman Problem, Jessica Houseknecht
Senior Honors Theses
In recent years, major companies have done research on using drones for parcel delivery. Research has shown that this can result in significant savings, which has led to the formulation of various truck and drone routing and scheduling optimization problems. This paper explains and analyzes a new approach to the Drone Traveling Salesman Problem (DTSP) based on ant colony optimization (ACO).
The ACO-based approach has an acceptance policy that maximizes the usage of the drone. The results reveal that the pheromone causes the algorithm to converge quickly to the best solution. The algorithm performs comparably to the MIP model, CP …

New Clock-Driven Algorithm Based On Separation Of Synaptic Conductance Computation, Zhijie Wang, Peng Xia, Han Fang, Xiaochun Gu
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: In order to reduce the computing time when simulating the biologic neural network, an efficient clock-driven algorithm based on the separation of synaptic conductance computation is presented. It is found that the calculation of the synaptic state variables can be separated into two independent parts: one called conductance coefficient related with the pre-synaptic neuron, and the other called synaptic current. By introducing the data structure of the virtual synapse cluster to storing sequences of synaptic conductance coefficient, the former part can be calculated independently according to the spiking states of pre-synaptic neuron at each time step. When calculating the …

Abstract: For verifying the design rationality and the property of a linkage underactuated finger, Solidworks is utilized to simulate the grasp operation of the finger with some different objects at the different positions. The simulations can be used to analyze the grasping range, the underactuated characteristic, the uniformity of grasp motion and the mechanical property. The finger mechanism contains springs that brings adaptive grasp capability of different objects. The results show that the finger can make suitable capability for grasping the objects whose size can vary from 0.106 to 0.851 times of the finger length. And the finger can give …

Modeling And Simulation Of False Report Filtering Scheme Based On Position In Wireless Sensor Networks, Zhixiong Liu, Limiao Li
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: In wireless sensor networks, the adversary can inject false reports from compromised nodes. Previous security designs cannot detect faked reports that are forged coordinately by a group of compromised nodes. Furthermore, in sparse areas, some events failed to be reported to sink. This paper proposes a position based filtering scheme (PFS). It derives the optimal coverage degree ω, and the nodes are deployed accordingly. After deployment, each node distributes its position to some other nodes. When a report is generated for an observed event, it must carry t distinct MACs (Message Authentication Codes) along with positions of all detecting …

Wind Speed Noise Reduction In Wind Farm Based On Variational Mode Decomposition, Xinghua Xu, Tinglong Pan, Dinghui Wu
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Wind power forecast is based on the existing data, and the wind speed data in wind power are mixed with different types of noise. In order to improve the precision of prediction, noise reduction is needed. However, the traditional empirical mode decomposition noise reduction method has the phenomenon of mode mixing. To improve the effect of the noise reduction, a kind of noise reduction method based on variational mode decomposition is proposed. The variational mode decomposition is a new method which has good noise immunity and no mode mixing. To thoroughly research the application of variational mode decomposition …
