Lignin Derived Hydrophobic Deep Eutectic Solvents As Sustainable Extractants, Yuxuan Zhang, Qi Qiao, Usman Lame Abbas, Jun Liu, Yi Zheng, Christopher Jones, Qing Shao, Jian Shi

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

Solvent innovation has become a central task for improving the sustainability of chemical processes1. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) emerge as environmentally friendly alternatives to toxic and volatile organic solvents. One appealing aspect for DESs is that they can be synthesized using naturally occurring compounds from biomass. Herein, we prepared novel hydrophobic DESs based on lignin derivatives and characterized their physicochemical properties including density, viscosity, and thermal behavior. The results showed that five lignin-derived hydrophobic DESs made from menthol, thymol, and 2,6-dimethoxyphenol were promising as green solvents due to their low viscosities and environmentally friendly constituents. To evaluate the potential application …

Ads-B Classification Using Multivariate Long Short-Term Memory–Fully Convolutional Networks And Data Reduction Techniques, Sarah Bolton, Richard Dill, Michael R. Grimaila, Douglas Hodson

Faculty Publications

Researchers typically increase training data to improve neural net predictive capabilities, but this method is infeasible when data or compute resources are limited. This paper extends previous research that used long short-term memory–fully convolutional networks to identify aircraft engine types from publicly available automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) data. This research designs two experiments that vary the amount of training data samples and input features to determine the impact on the predictive power of the ADS-B classification model. The first experiment varies the number of training data observations from a limited feature set and results in 83.9% accuracy (within 10% of …

Queueing System With Potential For Recruiting Secondary Servers, Srinivas Chakravarthy, Alexander N. Dudin, Sergey A. Dudin, Olga S. Dudina

Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering Publications

In this paper, we consider a single server queueing system in which the arrivals occur according to a Markovian arrival process (MAP). The served customers may be recruited (or opted from those customers’ point of view) to act as secondary servers to provide services to the waiting customers. Such customers who are recruited to be servers are referred to as secondary servers. The service times of the main as well as that of the secondary servers are assumed to be exponentially distributed possibly with different parameters. Assuming that at most there can only be one secondary server at any given …

Factors Influencing Users’ Attitudes Towards Using Brain Computer Interface (Bci) For Non Medical Uses: An Application Of The Technology Acceptance Model (Tam), Yichin Wu, Leila Halawi

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

While brain-computer interfaces (BCI) are gaining popularity in assisting people with illnesses, there is also increased technical research on incorporating BCI into healthy people’s lives. So far, not much research has focused on user attitudes, although some research has pointed out privacy and trust issues. Understanding potential users’ attitudes, expectations, and concerns early in the technology development stage is crucial for the novelty's success. For this reason, this study aims to understand the general publics’ attitude towards BCI for nonmedical uses using the technology acceptance model (TAM). The study will offer insights into how external factors including technology optimism, familiarity, …

Faculty Publications

Rubberized concrete is widely used in construction by utilizing the advantages of partially replacing fine or coarse aggregate with rubber to enhance several properties of concrete and provide an environmentally friendly solution. This paper experimentally explores the influence of utilizing crumb rubber (CR) as an alternate coarse aggregate in concrete. Concrete specimens were prepared with different percentages of rubber (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%). Additionally, other parameters, such as freezing–thawing cycles, temperature, and stainless steel fibers (SSFs), were investigated. The workability of fresh concrete and the compression properties of hardened concrete were examined. Reductions in the mechanical properties of …

To verify the effectiveness, the method is applied to the multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm and the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm. The convergence …
