Relating Detonation Parameters To The Detonation Synthesis Of Silicon Carbide, Martin Langenderfer, Eric W. Bohannan, Jeremy Lee Watts, William Fahrenholtz, Catherine E. Johnson 2022 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Relating Detonation Parameters To The Detonation Synthesis Of Silicon Carbide, Martin Langenderfer, Eric W. Bohannan, Jeremy Lee Watts, William Fahrenholtz, Catherine E. Johnson

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Detonation synthesis of silicon carbide (SiC) nanoparticles from carbon liberated by negatively oxygen balanced explosives was evaluated in a 23 factorial design to determine the effects of three categorical experimental factors: (1) cyclotrimethylene-trinitramine (RDX)/2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) ratio, (2) silicon (Si) additive concentration, and (3) Si particle size. These factors were evaluated at low and high levels as they relate to the detonation performance of the explosive and the solid Si-containing phases produced. Detonation velocity and Chapman-Jouguet (C-J) detonation pressure, which were measured using rate stick plate dent tests, were evaluated. Solid detonation product mass, silicon carbide product concentration, and residual silicon …

Exploring The Deformation Mechanics Of Coal Ribs Using The Distinct Element Modeling Approach, Maurice Sunkpal, Taghi Sherizadeh 2022 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Exploring The Deformation Mechanics Of Coal Ribs Using The Distinct Element Modeling Approach, Maurice Sunkpal, Taghi Sherizadeh

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Understanding coal rib geomechanics is essential for improving rib stability and eliminating fatality and injury trends due to rib failures. There are presently no standardized rib control practices available in most countries. In light of this observed dearth, this investigation aims to improve understanding of rib failure mechanisms using the distinct element modeling (DEM) technique. DEM is chosen because of its superior advantage to explicitly represent discontinuities and their constitutive behaviors, besides that of the intact rock matrix. To analyze the rib stability, a numerical monitoring protocol is implemented to monitor the deformation characteristics of the coal rock mass as …

A New Rock Hardness Classification System Based On Portable Dynamic Testing, Sasan Ghorbani, Seyed Hadi Hoseinie, Ebrahim Ghasemi, Taghi Sherizadeh, Christina Wanhainen 2022 Missouri University of Science and Technology

A New Rock Hardness Classification System Based On Portable Dynamic Testing, Sasan Ghorbani, Seyed Hadi Hoseinie, Ebrahim Ghasemi, Taghi Sherizadeh, Christina Wanhainen

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Hardness is one of the critical physical characteristics of minerals and rocks, which indicates the resistance of the rock to penetration, scratch, or permanent deformation. As a basic concept, rock hardness has a significant role in rock mechanics and geological engineering and is an appropriate diagnostic tool for the classification of minerals and rocks. The main purpose of this study is to guide rock engineers to measure the rock hardness faster, easier, and more accurately using Leeb's dynamic hardness test. Accordingly, this paper presents a new rock hardness classification system based on the Leeb dynamic and portable hardness testing method. …

Final Inversion Of The Midcontinent Rift During The Rigolet Phase Of The Grenvillian Orogeny, Eben B. Hodgin, Nicholas L. Swanson-Hysell, James M. Degraff, Andrew R.C. Kylander-Clark, Mark D. Schmitz, Andrew C. Turner, Yiming Zhang, Daniel A. Stolper

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Despite being a prominent continental-scale feature, the late Mesoproterozoic North American Midcontinent Rift did not result in the break-up of Laurentia, and subsequently underwent structural inversion. The timing of inversion is critical for constraining far-field effects of orogenesis and processes associated with the rift’s failure. The Keweenaw fault in northern Michigan (USA) is a major thrust structure associated with rift inversion; it places ca. 1093 Ma rift volcanic rocks atop the post-rift Jacobsville Formation, which is folded in its footwall. Previous detrital zircon (DZ) U-Pb geochronology conducted by laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) assigned a ca. 950 Ma maximum …

Coal Geology & Exploration

The identification and evaluation of tourism resources are important basis for tourism planning and development in abandoned mining areas. This paper adopts literature review method and inductive analysis method to comprehensively sort out the domestic and foreign research results on the value evaluation of tourism resources in abandoned mining areas, and systematically analyze the identification, evaluation system construction and evaluation methods of tourism resources in abandoned mining areas. It is found that the current understanding of tourism resources in abandoned mining areas is only at the level of mining relics and mining heritage, lacking emphasis on the natural resources such …

Research On Redevelopment Model Of Abandoned Mining Land From The Perspective Of Property Right Policy, DENG Yuanyuan, CHANG Jiang, FENG Shanshan, ZHOU Xue 2022 College of Architecture and Design, China University of Mining & Technology, Xuzhou 221116, China

Research On Redevelopment Model Of Abandoned Mining Land From The Perspective Of Property Right Policy, Deng Yuanyuan, Chang Jiang, Feng Shanshan, Zhou Xue

Coal Geology & Exploration

The reuse of abandoned mines has become the main path for resource-based cities to realize functional transformation. The redevelopment of mining land belongs to the renewal of urban stock industrial land, which is a spatial transformation process accompanied by property right transfer. The research on the evolution of the relationship between relevant property rights policies and abandoned mine redevelopment model is helpful to understand the impact of the policy and put forward suggestions for future policies. This paper combs the national and local property rights policies since 1990, takes the redevelopment practice in different times of this period as an …

Refined 3d Modeling Of Rock And Mine Specimens In Xishan Coalfield And Its Virtual Simulation Platform Construction, ZHANG Qiongyue, CHEN Liming, ZHAO Jingui, WANG Jianmin 2022 College of Mining Engineering, Taiyuan University of Technology, Taiyuan 030024, China

Refined 3d Modeling Of Rock And Mine Specimens In Xishan Coalfield And Its Virtual Simulation Platform Construction, Zhang Qiongyue, Chen Liming, Zhao Jingui, Wang Jianmin

Coal Geology & Exploration

Rock and mineral specimens are unique and non-renewable. The traditional collection display is not convenient for professional academic exchanges, which limits the efficient development of the popularization of geosciences. 350 representative rock and mineral specimens of Xishan Coalfield in Taiyuan City are collected to explore the fine 3D modeling of small-scale rock and mineral specimens and to construct a virtual simulation platform. First, the multi-view image 3D reconstruction technology to design a matching three-dimensional ring object photography device is used to collect image data. Then modeling accuracy is optimized from two aspects of original image quality and modeling software. Finally, …

Coal Geology & Exploration

For deeper drilling depth and longer service life of MWD, a self-protection sealing device for the MWD instrument is designed given the defects of the combined static sealing structure. The relationship between rubber airbag expansion displacement and air pressure was studied through static expansion numerical simulation. On this basis, the reasons for different results due to different model sizes were analyzed, and the factors causing the different simulation results of the self-protection sealing device were discussed. The four independent variables of airbag diameter, width, wall thickness and inner cavity width were determined and simulated to explore their relationship with the …
