Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective and Methods In recent years, regional grouting through ground directional drilling has become the preferred technique for water disaster prevention and control in floor limestones in a coal mining area. In grouting engineering, the diffusion radius of cement grout, which has always received wide attention, is constrained by multiple factors including the shear yield strength (yield strength for short) and specific gravity of cement grout, along with grouting pressure. The diffusion radius in turn influences the implementation effects of on-site grouting engineering. Among its controlling factors, the yield strength of cement grout cannot be tested on site. Given this, …

Application Of Five Seismic Attributes In Natural Fracture Prediction For Deep Coalbed Methane Production Along The Eastern Margin Of The Ordos Basin, Tong Jiangnan, Wang Feng, Zhang Feng, Hou Wei, Li Zhongbai, Ji Liang, Jiang Yanan, Sun Wei
Coal Geology & Exploration
Background Natural fractures serve as both the primary storage space for free gas of deep coalbed methane (CBM) and pathways for hydrocarbon migration. Furthermore, these fractures can enhance the porosity and permeability of strata under the deep, high-pressure condition, significantly amplifying the permeability of coal seams. Therefore, the fine-scale characterization of the planar distribution of natural fractures is crucial to deep CBM production. Objectives and Methods This study investigated the No.8 coal seam in the Carboniferous Benxi Formation within the Daning-Jixian block on the eastern margin of the Ordos Basin. Through offset vector tiles (OVT) domain processing of offshore 3D …

This laboratory-scale study presents the development and validation of a hydraulic fracturing technique to directly measure the tensile strength of cemented paste backfill (CPB), providing an alternative to traditional strength testing methods. Fracture initiation pressure (FIP) was used as the primary measure of CPB strength. Experimental results were compared with traditional benchmark measures such as uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), Brazilian tensile strength (BTS), and critical Mode-I fracture toughness (KIc). Regression analysis of experimental results revealed a strong linear relationship between FIP and these benchmark strength measures, indicating that FIP can be used as a reliable predictor of CPB strength. However, …

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a leading cause of long-term disability. Following mTBI, secondary chemical cascades and neuroinflammation can result in myelin damage, significantly impairing cognitive function. This study aims to assess demyelination in mice with mTBI induced by open-field low-intensity blast (LIB) using a novel three-dimensional short repetition time adiabatic inversion recovery UTE (3D STAIR-UTE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequence. Thirty male C57BL/6 mice, with 15 experiencing mTBI and 15 serving as sham controls, were included in this study. Behavioral tests were performed starting at 5 days post-injury to assess motor activity and anxiety-like responses followed by STAIR-UTE …

Ferroelectric elements of high-power electrical generators, utilizing the ability of ferroelectric materials to produce electric charge under mechanical stress, are subjected to either high-pressure shock or moderate-pressure impact loading. The results are reported herein on experimental investigations of a different mode for the generation of a high electric charge density, one that utilizes pre-compressed ferroelectric ceramics. Hard PZT 52/48 (Navy Type I/PZT-4) ferroelectric ceramic specimens were subjected to static uniaxial compressive stress parallel to polarization. At the moment of operation, the output terminals of the specimens were connected to an external circuit, and the applied stress was quickly removed, resulting …

It is known that aqueous haze particles can be activated into cloud droplets in a supersaturated environment. However, haze–cloud interactions have not been fully explored, partly because haze particles are not represented in most cloud-resolving models. Here, we conduct a series of large-eddy simulations (LESs) of a cloud in a convection chamber using a haze-capable Eulerian-based bin microphysics scheme to explore haze–cloud interactions over a wide range of aerosol injection rates. Results show that the cloud is in a slow microphysics regime at low aerosol injection rates, where the cloud responds slowly to an environmental change and droplet deactivation is …

Mining-Induced Fault Slip: Assessment Model And Method For Determining Fault Instability Ranges, Zhao Hongbao, Zhang Bo, Zhang Chi, Ji Dongliang
Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective Faults are highly susceptible to activation and slip instability under the influence of mining. This might trigger many disasters such as mine earthquakes, posing serious threats to mine safety. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the mechanical mechanisms behind mining-induced fault activation and determine the ranges of mutual feedback between mining and fault activation in advance. Methods With the 213B mining face of the Xinzhi coal mine as the engineering background, this study analyzed the fault activation process induced by mining and created an elastic mechanical model for the impacts of mining on the surrounding rocks of faults. Accordingly, …

Geological Characteristics And Key Technologies For Exploration And Development Of The Yanchuannan Coalbed Methane Field, Ordos Basin, He Xipeng, Xiao Cui, Gao Yuqiao, Li Xin, Guo Tao, Cai Xiao
Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective China boasts abundant coalbed methane (CBM) resources, which serve as a crucial replacement for the reserve growth and production addition of natural gas resources. In recent years, CBM exploration and production have gradually expanded into deep, thin coal seams, which, however, are characterized by strong heterogeneity, ultra-low permeability, high in situ stress, and complex enrichment patterns. Therefore, the exploration and exploitation of deep, thin coal seams face challenges such as inadequate geological theories, poor adaptability of key technologies, and low investment returns, which hinder large-scale commercial CBM production. Methods Focusing on the exploration and exploitation practice of middle-deep, thin …

Background The coal gangue, a solid waste, features high production and a continuous increase in the amount piled in China. The long-term piling up of coal gangue will cause the waste of land resources and environmental pollution in mining areas. Various methods for utilizing coal gangue, such as preparing high-value-added chemical products and extracting useful elements, suffer a limited consumption capacity, failing to meet the requirements of large-scale disposal and utilization of solid wastes and green mine construction. Advances The comprehensive utilization of coal gangue for mining area reclamation and underground backfilling represents a critical direction for its large-scale disposal …
