Prospective Study On Safety Climate Of Surface Mining In Pakistan, Izhar Mithal Jiskani, Saleem Raza Chalgri, Safiullah Memon, Niaz Muhammad Shahani, Abdullah Rasheed Qureshi
Journal of Sustainable Mining
The purpose of this study was to assess miners' perceptions about the safety climate of their workplace. To achieve the research aim, the relationship between demographic characteristics and occupational hazards was first determined, and finally, the relationship of safety climate with occupational hazards and health-seeking behavior was discovered. The data was collected through a self-reporting questionnaire. The results revealed that the subjects have to deal with severe occupational hazards, and they possess poor health-seeking behavior. A safety climate assessment showed that only one of the seven dimensions (i.e. safety communication, learning, and trust in co-worker safety competence) was at …

Effect Of An Eccentric Decoupled Charge On Rock Mass Blasting, Jung-Gyu Kim, Mahrous A. M. Ali, Jong-Gwan Kim
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Experimental and numerical analyses were conducted to investigate the effect of an eccentric loaded contour hole on a rock mass. In the concrete blocks used for the analyses, detonating cords were placed at the centre of the blast hole and eccentrically against the wall of the blast hole. PFC2D and AUTODYN were used for the numerical analyses, and the results of these software showed that an eccentric decoupled charge can result in the directional development of fractures, thereby enabling the control of cracks in the opposite direction. Even though both types of blasting have identical decoupling indexes, the crack …

Environmental Science Faculty Publications
This paper focuses on the identification of some plant accumulators of heavy metals that can facilitate mine remediation and rehabilitation in the Philippines and metal recovery or phytomining. Most of these hyperaccumulators are ferns that thrive very well in different terrains and of particular interest are Pityrogramma calomelanos, Pteris vittata, and Pteris melanocaulon that are abundant in abandoned CueAu mining areas. The amounts of Cu and As in the soil and in the aboveground (AG) and belowground (BG) components of the accumulator ferns were determined and the Bioaccumulation Factor (BF) and the Translocation Factor (TF) were derived. Efforts to …

Utilizing Hyperspectral Remote Sensing For Soil Gradation, Jordan Ewing, T. Oommen, Paramsothy Jayakumar, Russell Alger
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Soil gradation is an important characteristic for soil mechanics. Traditionally soil gradation is performed by sieve analysis using a sample from the field. In this research, we are interested in the application of hyperspectral remote sensing to characterize soil gradation. The specific objective of this work is to explore the application of hyperspectral remote sensing to be used as an alternative to traditional soil gradation estimation. The advantage of such an approach is that it would provide the soil gradation without having to obtain a field sample. This work will examine five different soil types from the Keweenaw Research Center …

Orphan Boy And Orphan Girl: Historical Information On Groundwater And Flooded Workings, Emelina Doucette
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Groundwater has historically, and still is, a concern within the mining industry due to the relationships between potential environmental and safety impacts. Montana Technological University uses a once operating silver mine, the Orphan Boy, to provide students with hands-on experience and is known as the Underground Mine Education Center (UMEC). The UMEC, and neighboring Orphan Girl mine located at the World Museum of Mining, have experienced increasing water levels the past few years. A compilation of known information pertaining to the Orphan Girl and Orphan Boy groundwater connections is presented using historical groundwater and mine data, stope books, hydrographs, and …

Use Of Shotcrete Made With Mine Waste To Reduce Costs And Environmental Impacts Of Waste Disposal, Casey Penney
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Mine waste rock is often recycled for paste and cement backfill in underground cut and fill mining operations. Aggregate in concrete and road surfacing material is another use if the mine waste does not contain deleterious materials that can degrade surface and ground water quality where it is used. Shotcrete usage in mining has been primarily limited to packaged dry mixes from offsite manufacturers. Substituting a manufacturer’s pre-mixed shotcrete with crushed and sized mine waste rock can reduce both the shotcrete cost and the environmental impact of waste disposal operations by reducing the required volume capacity and footprint size required …

Rare Earth-Bearing Particles In Fly Ash Carbons: Examples From The Combustion Of Eastern Kentucky Coals, James C. Hower, John G. Groppo Jr.
Center for Applied Energy Research Faculty and Staff Publications
Graphitic carbons from the combustion of bituminous coals and, perhaps, other coal ranks, tend to capture iron and a number of hazardous elements, including As, Hg, and Se. Rare earth elements in fly ashes occur in minerals, such as monazite, xenotime, and davidite. They also occur in sub-nm particles, probably in a mineral form, within the Al–Si glass on the investigated fly ashes. Just as graphitic carbons can capture Fe and hazardous elements, the carbons surrounding the fly ash glass and magnetic particles captures or encapsulates a broad suite of rare earth elements.

Seismics while mining is a passive seismic detection technique using a shearer as seismic source. Because the shearer moves unceasingly and excites the continuous signals, the conventional data processing method cannot be applied directly. In the paper a cross-correlation method of segmented waveform was put forward, the effective signal travel time was extracted through the segmentation of the data generated the shear, and then the velocity imaging method was used to image the interior of the working face and the front of the cutting hole. The wave equation was used to carry out the seismics while mining numerical simulation of …

Hydraulic fracturing technology is widely used in various aspects such as mine rock burst prevention and surrounding rock depressurization, but there has been a lack of efficient and intuitive technology for evaluating the fracturing effectiveness. To solve this problem, a three-component borehole TEM detection method using dynamic source and reception unit was proposed, and detection equipment and supporting construction techniques suitable for construction in hydraulic fracturing holes were developed. Two engineering tests have been carried out in a coal mine. By comparing the processing results of the vertical components of the two detection data before and after fracturing, a pure …

During the CBM exploration and development, the collapse column is one of the important factors restricting the exploration effectiveness of coalbed methane. Therefore, the effective identification of collapse column is of great significance for the improvement of CBM exploration. The previous identification methods are based on the discontinuity of the in-phase axis of seismic reflection caused by collapse column. In this paper, the collapse column is innovatively regarded as a kind of geological anomaly, and the identification and prediction of the collapse column are attempted by means of waveform indication inversion. Firstly, through the analysis of logging data and geological …
