The Catholic Intellectual Tradition And Its Dynamics, Jean Ehret 2011 Sacred Heart University

The Catholic Intellectual Tradition And Its Dynamics, Jean Ehret

Mission & Culture Publications

Throughout the papers of this book, the CIT appears not to be an abstract concept but a dynamic reality, a powerful source of inspiration for imagining creative ways to face the challenges of life in today’s world. Critical voices question the reference to Catholicism, others to a tradition. While addressing these issues helps to prevent the CIT from becoming the victim from either unreligious or traditionalist misconceptions, a synthetic approach will try to reveal fundamental dynamisms of the CIT that allow to identify it without reducing its inherent complexity and historical diversity, including its expressions yet to come.

Everyone Wants To Be Like Harvard- Or Do They: Cherishing All Missions Equally, Ellen Hazelkorn 2011 Technological University Dublin

Everyone Wants To Be Like Harvard- Or Do They: Cherishing All Missions Equally, Ellen Hazelkorn

Conference Papers

This paper aims to review the drivers of institutional diversity, and traditional higher education system frameworks which mirrored a simplistic understanding of knowledge creation and skill/labour market requirements. It then proposes a more differentiated approach of diversity appropriate for the 21st century and reflecting the complexity of knowledge production and concepts of research and scholarship, and the trend for universal higher education. On this basis, one may observe new models of higher education institutions emerging. The paper asks how these developments might help expand our understanding of diversity, and propose policy and institutional responses, looking at various examples internationally.

Schooling And The Everyday Ruptures Transnational Children Encounter In The United States And Mexico, Edmund T. Hamann, Víctor Zúñiga

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Using examples of students in Mexico who used to attend US schools and examples from Georgia of students who used to and might again attend Mexican schools, this chapter considers how an unremarkable, quotidian activity—the act of attending school—can become means for transnationally mobile children to experience shock, disconnection, and a reiterated sense of dislocation if schools are incompletely responsive to learners' biographies.

The Anglo Politics Of Latino Education: The Role Of Immigration Scripts, Edmund T. Hamann 2011 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

The Anglo Politics Of Latino Education: The Role Of Immigration Scripts, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

In the 41 states without a substantial historic Latino population, large-scale schooling of Latinos is a comparatively new issue and the nature of that schooling is fundamentally shaped by how the more established (usually Anglo) populations understand this task. This chapter describes the understandings that led to, but also limited, one particularly comprehensive attempt in Georgia to respond to Latino newcomers. In that sense, this is a study of the cosmologies that can undergird the politics of schooling of Latinos. This chapter utilizes the concept of the script, or broadly shared storylines about how things are or should be, to …

Toward A Set Of Theoretical Best Practices For Web 2.0 And Web-Based Technologies, Matthew Kruger-Ross, Lori B. Holcomb

Educational Foundations & Policy Studies Faculty Publications

Many educators are excited by and support the innovative and pedagogically invigorating technologies offered by the interactive and collaborative Web 2.0 movement. To date, much of the research on the integration of Web 2.0 tools has focused on technical and procedural generalizations about how one might incorporate these technologies into the classroom. While some research has addressed content specific uses of these tools, only a limited amount has explored best practices for using these technologies to encourage learning. While these studies are groundbreaking and serve an important purpose, this article aims to shift the ongoing conversation toward a first draft …

The Impact Of Revisionist History On Pre-Service And In-Service Teacher Worldviews, Franklin Titus Thompson, William P. Austin 2011 University of Nebraska at Omaha

The Impact Of Revisionist History On Pre-Service And In-Service Teacher Worldviews, Franklin Titus Thompson, William P. Austin

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

Students sometimes find the study of history to be boring and irrelevant. Many question the accuracy of accounts given. The introduction of revisionist history to a convenience sample of students (A^ =164) from a college of education program located at a Midwestern university made a positive difference in historical learner perspective. Students gained a greater appreciation for the study of the past, as well as a better understanding of how the melodramatic hyping of events and heroes discourages the formulation of a balanced and accurate view of history and its leaders. Pretest-to-posttest changes in mean scores were found to be …

Instructors' Perceptions Of The Bologna Model Of Higher Education Reform In Cameroon, Zachary Y. Mngo 2011 Andrews University

Instructors' Perceptions Of The Bologna Model Of Higher Education Reform In Cameroon, Zachary Y. Mngo

Dissertations

Problem Statement. The literature on education in Cameroon suggests that there is a deep-rooted history of resistance to educational reform and harmonization both at the K12 and higher education levels. Attempts by political and educational leaders to reform and harmonize the two very distinct systems of education, inherited from former colonizers (France/Britain), have failed in the past because of failure by policy makers to take care of the socio-cultural, professional, and academic demands of educational stakeholders—faculty, students, parents, and educational leaders. At the center of resistance has been the fear by Francophone and Anglophone students and faculty that their …

The Impact Of A Short-Term Review Treatment Program On Student Success In A College Algebra Course, Frances Clementi Hopf 2011 University of South Florida

The Impact Of A Short-Term Review Treatment Program On Student Success In A College Algebra Course, Frances Clementi Hopf

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The main purpose of this study was to investigate whether conducting a short-term online review of college algebra prerequisite skills at the start of a college algebra course concurrently with the normal course instruction and assignments would have a significant influence on student success. When failure rates in an entry-level college course such as college algebra can range from 20% to 60% or higher, it could present problems for the student and the institution (Burd & Boser, 2009). Research indicates that students who cannot pass entry-level college math courses have decreased chances of obtaining a college degree and it can …

Effects Of Comprehensive Education On Elementary School Student Performance On Standardized Exams, Kenneth Vaughn Higbee 2010 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Effects Of Comprehensive Education On Elementary School Student Performance On Standardized Exams, Kenneth Vaughn Higbee

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose if this study was to compare math and reading Criterion Reference Test (CRT) scores of 3rd and 5th grade students using two distinct educational models: a comprehensive educational curriculum (CEC) model and a No Child Left Behind (NCLB) curricular model. While the CEC curricular model focuses on a combination of core and non-core curriculum, the NCLB curricular model focused on a combination of intense core remediation and the reduction of some non-core curriculum. Students were from two demographically similar frontier Nevada elementary schools. Test scores were compared in 2004 when both schools used identical curricular approaches, and then …

Mi Educacion, Mi Voz, Nuestro Futuro: Una Investigación Con El Uso Del Diálogo Para Ver Y Entender Las Conversaciones De Los Protagonistas Sobre Los Expectativas, Aspiraciones Y Participación De La Educación Secundaria, Hilary Pollan

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

(From Introduction)

The aim of my research, then, is to see and understand how the protagonists of education, high school students participate in dialogue, why do we participate in the dialogue? and what they want resulting from a dialogue?. To accomplish this purpose, I applied a methodology of Paulo Freire for "the investigation of generative themes" of dialogue, so would not only be studying how and why we participate in dialogue, but also practicing it in my research. I made a day of dialogue, which involved seven students from different schools and public high schools, private subsidized and private pay. …

Ending Generational Poverty: A Contemporary Application Of The Work Of Paulo Freire In Nicaragua, Los Angeles And Uganda, Nicole Broom

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Paradigm Educational Materialist For The Pedagogy Of The 21st Century, Roberto Enrique Villaseca Muñoz Phd Candidate, Academic Director

Fostering Multicultural Competence and Global Justice: an SIT Symposium

Since the second half of the twentieth century, postmodern theories of discourse and language ideology has seized the collective imagination of society and education, mainly through the curriculum, pedagogical models, constructivism and the massmedia. In Higher Education, these are accentuated after the eighties, which contributed to sacrifice the materialistic ideas and the postmodern position within a framework of irrefutable ideological bias. The market economy of neoliberal ideology spreads a unique style of absolute truth, education paradigms of language and discourse that dislocates and deconstructs reality, articulated with the massmedia, encourages alienation. Neoliberalism destroys the environment and deepends social inequalities. These …
