Historical Thinking, Reading, And Writing About The World’S Newest Nation, South Sudan, John H. Bickford Iii, Molly Sigler Bickford
Faculty Research and Creative Activity
State and national education initiatives have significantly increased expectations of students’ non-fiction reading and writing. These initiatives provide the space for potential interdisciplinary units in English/language arts and social studies/history centered on content area reading and writing. To do so, teachers must locate age-appropriate, historically representative curricular materials and implement discipline-specific writing prompts. To guide elementary teachers’ instruction, we select a novel, underused topic: the birth of the Republic of South Sudan. Age-appropriate children’s trade books are coupled with diverse informational texts—oral histories, current event news articles, and artwork—to extend the trade books’ narratives into the realm of current events. …

Experiments On Curricular Flexibility Performed In Higher Educational Institutions In The Network Of Technological Education To Brazil, Aline Alzevedo Larroyed, Atila Pires Dos Santos, Laurisnor Rochester Barros Dos Santos, Marcos Luis Grams, Sandra Isaelle Figueiredo Dos Santos
Stream 5: Curriculum 2
This article presents two similar experiments on curricular flexibility, each of them performed in different Higher Educational Institutions in the network of technological education in Brazil. Both experiments aimed to allow better training routes, specially directed to the idea of the entrepreneurial university, applicable to enrolled students. On the other hand, it intended to reach better management of the Institutes resources. We used in both experiments the same curricular format, where all the subjects that made up a particular course had a workload of 40 hours and lasted only a month. Each month, new students could be enrolled in courses …

This study was a quantitative research investigation to determine the effects of teacher prompting techniques on the writing performance of 137 fourth and fifth graders from two parochial schools in West Virginia. Over a two-week period from March, 2014, to April, 2014, researchers collected writing samples with three typologies of prompting; no prompting, general prompting, and content specific prompting. The major outcome variables included were the numbers of words, number of sentences, and average sentence length, and writing ease and complexity level using the Flesch Kincaid Readability and The Flesch Reading Ease. Data analysis was accomplished by applying several types …

This case study of Liliana presents a portrait of a Bank Street alumna in her classroom. Liliana strives for her classroom to be a space where the core principles she learned during her Bank Street education guide the experience of children. The study of her work begins by exploring how a commitment to educating the cognitive, physical, and social–emotional domains of the whole child involves developing systems that promote play as the learning tool to achieve academic and social outcomes. After exploring how Liliana creates conditions for children to engage and learn through play, the case study focuses on how …
