Addressing The Ethnic Achievement Gap Through Culturally Relevant Teaching, Arienne Bowman 2025 Grand Valley State University

Addressing The Ethnic Achievement Gap Through Culturally Relevant Teaching, Arienne Bowman

Masters Projects

Schools are meant to provide all students with equal opportunities to achieve academic success in the classroom yet as the student bodies of American schools becomes increasingly diverse, students of color are achieving academic success at lower rates than their peers. This in part may be due to the growing cultural disparity between teachers and students as the majority of teachers are white. By implementing culturally relevant teaching (CRT) teachers will be more prepared to address this cultural disparity and better equipped to create classroom spaces and lessons that better meet the needs of a diverse body of learners. CRT …

Beyond The Red Pen: Investigating The Formation Of Reader And Writer Identity Development In Preservice Teachers, Sarah Rutt Williams, Pengtong Qu, Lydia Denning

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The influence of identifying as a reader and writer in being a literacy teacher has been emphasized in the literature (Graves, 1983). However, few studies have explored how teacher education programs develop these identities in preservice teachers (PSTs). Grounded in Demerath’s (2006) epistemological identity theory, this study explored the fluid process of teacher identity formation, focusing on nurturing PSTs’ identities as readers and writers. The study took place over one semester in an English Education course. The researchers analyzed three PST participants’ weekly reflections about their beliefs regarding teaching and learning literacy. These statements revolved around topics that aligned with …

Unlocking Literacy: A Structured, Systemic, And Multisensory Phonics Intervention For Struggling 5th-Grade Readers, Kimberly Driskell

Curriculum and Instruction (Ed.D.) Dissertations

A significant number of students missed essential foundational skills in the first grade when schools closed due to the global pandemic in 2020. When students returned to school for second grade, they were expected to start with grade-level standards rather than relearning the skills they had missed. This discrepancy caused gaps to grow larger in reading, and a larger percentage of students moved to the upper-grade levels, struggling to read. This study examined the effects of a structured, systematic, multisensory phonics intervention on struggling fifth-grade readers in the Early Intervention Program (EIP). Using implementation research, this study presented a quantitative …

“Narrative Medicine Saved My Life”: Writing Is A Verb As Well As A Noun, Marian M. Maccurdy, Sarah Robinson

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

Dedicated to Professor Peter Elbow 4/14/1935 – 2/6/2025

I, Marian, began my career as a graduate student in medieval literature who had a teaching assistantship to fund her degree. As a graduate student I lived in a world that saw writing as a noun, something done and finished, not as a verb, a process that shows us a world that is as ever-changing as we are. But as a writing teacher I found myself sliding into the world that writers inhabit, and
