Honors in Practice Online Archive

Good morning friends,

This fall semester began on my campus with a new crop of eager and engaged students who were ready to jump into their classes without the hesitancies we saw over the past few years. Our faculty is energized and excited to teach. I hope you had a similar experience on your campuses. I hope your presence at our national conference has also imparted a sense of excitement about your work in the classroom and as administrators. I always learn far more than I expect when I attend our annual conference.

In a plenary address at the 2023 NCHC annual conference in Chicago, the former Vice Chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee issued a challenge for honors students and educators to use their voices and positions of local leadership to promote peace. The call for peace advocacy extended in Chicago resonated with the large audience, as leadership development represents a high-impact practice that many honors programs embrace. As national and international conflicts produce increasing polarization and divisiveness that seep into our campuses and local communities, the urgency for honors students to hone critical thinking and practical skills needed for citizen leadership …

Evaluation Of A Simulation-Based, E-Learning Intervention To Develop Prelicensure Nursing Students' Clinical Competency To Recognize Tracheostomy Airway Complications, Ruth Bargainer Tobin 2024 University of Texas at Arlington

Evaluation Of A Simulation-Based, E-Learning Intervention To Develop Prelicensure Nursing Students' Clinical Competency To Recognize Tracheostomy Airway Complications, Ruth Bargainer Tobin

Nursing Dissertations - Archive

Tracheostomy airway patient safety errors are a global, yet preventable problem. Unrecognized tracheostomy airway complications lead to patient deterioration, resulting in hypoxic brain damage and death or permanent disability. The majority of preventable tracheostomy events occur after patient discharge from the intensive care setting. These catastrophic events are attributed to deficiencies in competent and safe nursing care. Prelicensure nursing students have few clinical opportunities to learn tracheostomy management and may enter nursing practice lacking the clinical competency (CC) to recognize a tracheostomy airway problem. Simulation is a modality for learning high-risk skills such as tracheostomy care (TC) in a setting …

Differentiated Instruction: A Qualitative Study Focusing On The Voices Of Elementary Teachers And Their Needs, Suzanne S. Fanelle

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

This qualitative study examined teachers’ perspectives about their implementation of differentiated instruction in an effort to support district-led professional development programming. Differentiated instruction is based on well-considered goals and thorough analysis of students’ achievement, progress, and instructional needs, combined with formative assessments and progress monitoring (Van Geel et al., 2019). An initial questionnaire was administered to all K-5 teachers in a suburban school district, followed by individual interviews with three teachers who expressed that they often use differentiation in the classroom. Each of the three teachers participated in two interviews lasting 45-60 minutes each over the course of several weeks. …

Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences

A growing concern in graduate medical education (GME), research indicates that some graduating residents are unprepared to enter unsupervised practice. The aim of this qualitative phenomenological study is to illuminate the resident experience surrounding the development of autonomy in clinical decision making relative to teaching practices. Research questions include: (1) What is the dual role of learner/teacher like for residents as they attend to their own and others’ development of autonomy in clinical reasoning and decision making? (2) Which teaching methods do they commonly experience as the learner and practice as the teacher relative to this development, and which methods …

What experiences contributed to the student’s return to the institution? What retention strategies and programs were used during the withdrawal and re-enrollment processes? The participants’ lived experiences were applied to two theoretical frameworks: Tinto’s (1993) …

Investing In Critical Consciousness And Civic Engagement In Underfunded Schools, Molly Dailey Andersson 2024 West Chester University of Pennsylvania

Investing In Critical Consciousness And Civic Engagement In Underfunded Schools, Molly Dailey Andersson

West Chester University Master’s Theses

Throughout this thesis I confront inequity in its pervasive and far-reaching form of American K-12 school finance. By analyzing the inequitable school funding practices of funding formulas and debt repayment structures, I explore how past and present-day school funding practices have evolved through the values and modes of racial capitalism and more recently, neoliberalism. Through Critical Action Research, I challenge the hegemonic hold racial capitalism and neoliberalism have on school funding by critiquing the educational practices and relations it helps produce. Despite the pernicious scale of inequitable school funding practices, Critical Action Research allows for imagining and shaping an education …

There is a need to develop an anatomy course with contemporary pedagogy that is consistent with the core of the occupational therapy profession. The purpose of this study was to examine students’ perception of a blended learning pedagogy applied to an occupation-based anatomy course compared to a traditionally delivered anatomy course using cadaver lab for entry-level doctoral occupational therapy students at a private university in the Pacific Northwest region. A retrospective, nonrandomized, two-group, post-test only design with data gathered at the completion of each course was used. One student cohort received the occupation-based anatomy course with a traditional in-person learning …

Eradicating The Standardized School Experience: Creating Joy And Fulfillment Through Self Exploration, Co-Creating Community, And Problematizing For A Better World, Jessica Morris-Horowitz 2024 West Chester University

Eradicating The Standardized School Experience: Creating Joy And Fulfillment Through Self Exploration, Co-Creating Community, And Problematizing For A Better World, Jessica Morris-Horowitz

West Chester University Master’s Theses

The writing of this thesis was motivated by the observation that classroom experiences driven by the standardization of curriculum and assessment creates feelings of disengagement and resentment of schooling within students, and the belief that standardization limits the possibility that the classroom and school can serve as a setting that is foundational to a better world for all. It has been observed that neither teacher education programs or school districts provide educators with concrete resources that are aimed at supporting students in exploring their interests and concerns, nor meaningful engagement with the world outside of the classroom. Instead, education leaders …
