Welcome to the Extension Update! My name is Connie Reimers-Hild, and I am an Extension Educator focused in leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship at the Kimmel Education and Research Center in Nebraska City. In today’s Extension Update, I will present the power of setting SMARTR Goals!
We all hear about how important it is to set goals, but very few of us to actually do it. What if we made the process of goal setting more personally fulfilling and more fun? As a Certified Professional Coach, I have used SMARTR goal setting with my clients. Establishing SMARTR goals can be powerful …

First Language Use By Adequate Formal Schooling Adult English Language Learners In A University English Language Institute, Joel S. Garza
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
In their pursuit of a better way of life, immigrants who arrive in this country are faced with many challenges. One important challenge is their need to adapt to a new society that requires them to learn English as a second language (ESL). As adult learners enter ESL programs, they are confronted with a common sense belief that the exclusion of their native language (L1) and the exclusive use of the target language (TL) in their instruction is the best approach to learn English. Whether immigrant students are educated or not in their home countries, they face the double task …

How Do You Define Success?, Connie I. Reimers-Hild
Kimmel Education and Research Center: Presentations and White Papers
What exactly is success? Many of the books, blogs and other for-profit resources available on success would have us believe that success is making it big in terms of money, power and fame. If you happen to have an executive title or big paycheck, you must be successful, right? This type of success is largely associated with external motivation and gratification.
What is the cost of getting “to the top” or “making it big?” Sometimes, we forget to consider the tradeoffs associated with perceived success, or we only hear about the positive elements of money, fame and status. Rarely do …

Moving Beyond Seeing With Our Eyes Wide Shut. A Response To “There Is No Culturally Responsive Teaching Spoken Here”, Kenneth J. Fasching-Varner, Vanessa Dodo Seriki
Democracy & Education
A struggle exists to engage in culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) that authentically represents the voices and interests of all across the K–20 spectrum, from higher education institutions, to teacher preparation programs, and into U.S. classrooms. This article responds to Hayes and Juárez's piece “There Is No Culturally Responsive Teaching Spoken Here” by extending the conversation with the suggestion that one of the major problems in speaking CRP has to do with a disconnect between articulated commitments and actual practices. This response article takes a critical look at the landscape in which educators work to reveal the nature of overrepresentation of …

Library Faculty Publications
This case study will describe how the Stony Brook University Libraries instruction program partnered with another student support service (student computing office) to nurture a relationship with the Educational Opportunities Program (EOP) over several years to provide their students with the library research and computer skills needed to succeed in college. EOP is a state-funded program aimed at economically disadvantaged students whose high school education has not fully prepared them for college success.

Differentiated Physical Learning Environment, Alisha Thiessen
Master of Education Program Theses
This research study examines the correlation between student academic growth in mathematics in a differentiated physical learning environment and whether or not a differentiated physical environment affects students’ attitudes in mathematics. Previous studies have shown that students gain a deeper connection to the curriculum and have a greater enjoyment of the subject matter when a subject is differentiated (Sondergeld &Schultz, 2008). This study looks specifically at differentiating only the physical learning environment and how this affects student academic growth and attitude towards in mathematics. This study found no statistical evidence of greater academic achievement for those students who were part …

Christian Approach To Secondary Classroom Management, Alysia A. Haveman
Master of Education Program Theses
Teachers at all levels of experience and education find that classroom management is one of the most difficult aspects of the job. This seems especially true for teachers in the secondary classroom where the student’s physical and psychological development seems to be mismatched, and where an attitude of student disillusionment prevails. Since all educators manage their classrooms with some sort of belief system motivating their actions and decisions, it is important for the Christian classroom teacher to closely examine the belief systems which influence current classroom management theories to determine if these belief systems are congruent with a Biblical view …

Capacity Building For The Common Good: Psu's Interdisciplinary Minor In Civic Leadership, Masami Nishishiba, Kevin Kecskes
Center for Public Service Publications and Reports
Since the early 1990s, Portland State University has furthered its commitment to civic engagement education by adopting an integrated approach to its general education curriculum. As an outgrowth to this initiative, the minor in Civic Leadership was developed in 2004–05. This interdisciplinary minor was designed with the intent to further integrate and sustain institutional engagement with the Portland Metropolitan community and beyond. This article discusses the history, structure, and roles of academic and community partners associated with the Civic Leadership minor, and elaborates the philosophical foundation of the interdisciplinary curriculum that aims to build student capacity for the common good.

Developing An Independent Reading Program Within The Framework Of A Biblical Worldview, Kristin M. Contant
Master of Education Program Theses
Students today, especially middle and high school students, are reading less for pleasure than they used to. Research studies have proven that reading helps students grow academically and encourages them to see the world differently. So, to encourage students to read, some schools are giving students time to read in independent programs such as Silent Sustained Reading (SSR), Accelerated Reader Program (ARP), or even implementing reward programs to improve students’ reading ability. Many researchers have described what aspects of independent reading programs work and what aspects do not. Their conclusions show that there are aspects within the programs that motivate …

This article is concerned with commonsense science knowledge, the informally-gained knowledge of the natural world that students possess prior to formal instruction in a scientific discipline. Although commonsense science has been the focus of substantial study for more than two decades, there are still profound disagreements about its nature and origin, and its role in science learning. What is the reason that it has been so difficult to reach consensus? We believe that the problems run deep; there are difficulties both with how the field has framed questions and the way that it has gone about seeking answers. In order …

Facilitating Preservice Teacher Induction Through Learning In Partnership, Briony Carter
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Partnership in teacher education is usually seen as needing to occur between the university and a school. This teacher education program, however, considers partnership across many stakeholders, in addition: employer authorities, community agencies and pre-service teachers themselves as active partners. Using Wenger’s (1998) concept of communities of practice, this paper explores several action research cycles of a teacher educator, examining changing practices in a regional/rural initiative. The paper explores strategies at the university to promote induction into the profession, examples of university pedagogies to facilitate professional growth and understanding of professionalism, orientation to the regional community, orientation to the school, …

A research team conducted an evaluation of a laptop initiative in 18 North Carolina high schools through administrator, teacher, and student focus groups; teacher and student surveys; and classroom observations. The study aimed to provide information about the value of the laptop initiative in enhancing student learning. In addition, it intended to identify challenges to the successful implementation of 1:1 programs, strategies for meeting those challenges, and services and supports needed to enable successful 1:1 programs throughout the state. This paper explores how the initiative affected instructional practice in areas such as technology use, communication, the role of the teacher, …
