When Authoritarianism Is Beneficial: The Curvilinear Relationship Between Authoritarian Leadership And Follower Extra-Role Behavior, Shu Ge, William Gardner, Elizabeth Karam, Zhen Yan

Although authoritarian leadership is often assumed counterproductive, it may benefit certain follower outcomes. Drawing on theories of authoritarian leadership and social exchange, we propose that moderate levels of authoritarian leadership can enhance follower extra-role behavior, particularly when authoritarian leaders also demonstrate benevolence and/or morality. Results from a three-wave survey of 84 leader-follower pairs across U.S. companies show both U-shaped curvilinear and linear relationships between authoritarian leadership and follower extra-role behavior. Trust in the leader mediated the linear relationship, while the leader's perceived benevolence and morality moderated the curvilinear one. We discuss theoretical and practical implications for authoritarian leadership.

This phenomenological study explores the experiences of African American chief diversity officers (CDO) with workplace belonging in organizations where they implement diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) initiatives. Through interviews with six CDOs across various sectors, the research examines how their backgrounds, identities, and organizational climates influence their perceptions and experiences of belonging. The study reveals five key themes: organizational experience, systemic disruption, identity politics, environmental incongruence, and workplace resilience. Findings indicate that CDOs often face unique challenges related to their marginalized identities, systemic barriers, and organizational resistance to change. The Influence Of Organizational Culture On Mission Drift In A Christian University, Mark Reddy

This study addressed a critical gap in the literature by investigating the relationship between organizational culture and mission drift within Christian higher education. While mission drift has been widely discussed in popular press, limited academic research has explored the factors influencing it, particularly organizational culture. Utilizing the Denison Organizational Culture Survey (DOCS) and the Mission Drift Survey, this study evaluated how culture influences mission clarity and safeguards against mission drift in a Christian university. Findings reveal that consistency and mission from the DOCS are strong predictors of mission clarity, with both showing statistical significance (p < .001). In addition, the DOCS elements predicted safeguards against mission drift through consistency and mission at the significance level of p < .05. The study’s results highlight the importance of consistency and mission in combating mission drift, offering Christian higher education institutions practical insights for reinforcing their foundational goals. Additionally, the research contributed to validating the Mission Drift Survey in an academic context, broadening its potential application beyond business and into higher education sectors. This topic is growing, and further research is needed to expand on these findings and explore additional organizational cultural factors.

Background: This study aimed to identify behavioral factors that affect patient attendance in outpatient clinics, especially those related to rescheduling. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 20,386 appointment records for 6,252 patients in an outpatient specialty clinic at a women’s and children’s hospital in Singapore over 34 months (January 2012–October 2014). Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the influence of independent variables on appointment no-shows. Results: The average no-show rate of the study population was 28.87%.
