Solving problems in complex organizations requires managers to successfully navigate organizational boundaries. Yet, crossing boundaries can be an extremely difficult endeavor that requires sophisticated and multifaceted skills and behaviors. In this paper, we introduce boundary permeability to expand on the available boundary crossing techniques identified by Carlile (2004). Acknowledging the messiness in organizational life, we propose a set of techniques requiring that managers consider the multiplicity of boundary conditions and, in many cases, use multiple techniques simultaneously. Because U.S. Big 4 audit quality is inconsistent between office locations within the same firm, the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) has maintained a standing Audit Quality Indicator Project designed to assist academics, practitioners, and its own inspection teams in identifying specific areas in which high audit quality may fail to be achieved. While many of the PCAOB audit quality indicators have been examined in prior research, information regarding the personnel comprising each office audit department has been difficult to glean because personnel data is not publicly disclosed by the Big 4.

We investigate an online retailer’s optimal strategies for her promotion of the garments that are classified based on their price levels and life cycle stages. Accordingly we consider nine scenarios. For each scenario, the retailer implements a promotion strategy that involves only a discount, only a coupon, or both of them. We develop a three-stage approach, in which we first perform regression analysis to identify the significant variables, then obtain the optimal decisions, and .find the best scenario for the retailer. We examine the robustness of the relationship between income attainment and personality traits from Tellegen’s three-factor model that map into constructs of positive emotionality (well-being, social potency, achievement, and social closeness), negative emotionality (stress reaction, alienation, and aggression), and constraint (control, harm avoidance, and traditionalism). We do so by estimating the sampling distribution of 32,768 models in a sample of self-employed people from the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study to account for model uncertainty. We find that only social potency and aggression are robust and positively correlated with income attainment among the self-employed. In contrast, income attainment for …

Does Spanish bilingualism have measurable fiscal value in the U.S. construction industry? Studying and becoming proficient in Spanish is feasible, affordable, and can be accomplished at Cal Poly in conjunction with a Construction Management major. In a dynamic industry that values versatile employees, where communication is key to success, the capability of speaking Spanish is a substantial value-add in the workforce. Using qualitative and quantitative data analysis, it is concluded that individuals who possess English and Spanish-speaking abilities in the U.S. construction industry can expect a 3 percent wage premium when compared to English-only speakers.
