Service Quality Assessment Of Free Trade Port Zone Using Multilayer Quality Function Deployment: An Empirical Study In Taiwan, Sheng-Teng Huang, Ki-Yin Chang, I-Hsuan Su, Ay-Shiou Chiou, Yin-Chi Chen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The aim of this paper is to improve the service quality of Taiwan’s free trade port zone (FTPZ), which is the key facilitator for trade activities and economic growth. However, high service quality is important to satisfy FTPZ’s users, investors, and other stakeholders. This study evaluates the service quality of the FTPZ using the multilayer quality function deployment (QFD) technique. Many previous studies on the FTPZ only focused on the points of view of manufacturers, logistics companies, and cargo owners, whereas a service provider (such as the Maritime Port Bureau) has a different viewpoint. To fill this gap, we evaluate …

Digital Liability Risk: A Note On Estimating Exposure, Costs, And Implications, Robyn L. Raschke, Michael T. Lee, Kimberly F. Charron, Paulette R. Tandy
Department of Accounting Faculty Research
Digital liabilities are the unknown future costs that occur after an event related to digital assets threatens organizational value. These events emerge from: (1) an IT data breach or cybersecurity failure; (2) IT infrastructure limitations that limit future opportunities; and (3) changes in business models that are limited due to IT infrastructure. Potential digital liabilities are not fully understood and can be difficult to quantify. Derived from prior research, this research note proposes four methods, modified from existing research literature, for estimating the cost of digital liabilities prior to a digital asset compromise. We conclude the research note by discussing …

Passion At Work: A Meta-Analysis Of Individual Work Outcomes, Jeffrey M. Pollack, Violet Ho, Ernest H. O'Boyle, Bradley L. Kirkman
Management Faculty Publications
Academic research on passion is much more complex than the extant literature or popular press portray. Although research on work-related passion has progressed rapidly over the last decade, much remains unknown. We are now just beginning to recognize the different theoretical underpinnings and empirical operationalizations that work passion research has adopted, and the confusion this has generated hampers our understanding of the construct and its relationship to workplace outcomes. Accordingly, we use a meta-analytic examination to study the work-related outcomes of three dominant literature streams of work passion: general passion, dualistic passion (i.e., harmonious passion and obsessive passion), and role-based …

Robins Case Network
Uber focuses primarily on the ride-hailing industry, which puts the company in direct competition with regular taxis. The company is like a lot of tech-driven, fast growing entrepreneurial firms in that it still struggles for profitability. Also, the popularity of this new form of transportation has put the company and its close competitors, such as Lyft, in the spotlight of government lawmakers and regulators. If they classify Uber drivers as employees rather than independent contractors, it could dramatically alter the Uber business model. This case is written in the aftermath of the ouster of one of the company’s co-founders as …

The Syndicate Structure Of Securitized Corporate Loans, Z. Guo, Shage Zhang
School of Business Faculty Research
Securitized loans have lower lead bank shares, but larger shares held by non-CLO (collateralized loan obligation) institutional investors than nonsecuritized loans. The result can largely be explained by their degree of information asymmetry and credit risk. We find that lead banks increase their holdings after a nonsecuritized loan becomes securitized, but they do not reduce financial exposure to securitized facilities during the boom of the CLO market. Furthermore, we find that securitized loans do not perform differently from similar nonsecuritized loans. We conclude that differences in syndicate structure are likely shaped by participants’ investment preference rather than a manifestation of …

Research summary. We study the internationalization-related legitimacy challenges of firms with disruptive business models by using a case comparison of leading sharing economy companies Airbnb and Uber. We show that they are insulated from many traditional legitimacy challenges to multinationals entering host markets, but exposed to others that have not been noted previously. Specifically, we identify a novel market-entry legitimacy challenge, ‘liability of disruption,’ which manifests as regulatory, incumbent business and societal pushback against firms with disruptive business models. After presenting our cross-case analysis, we theorize about the nature and impacts of these three distinct but interconnected forms of host …

Do First Impressions Last? The Impact Of Initial Assessments And Subsequent Performance On Promotion Decisions, Dirk Black, Marshall Vance
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
This paper examines whether and for how long managers’ initial assessments of employee ability influence promotion decisions. Using archival data from minor league professional baseball, we find that, controlling for performance, initial assessments are associated with promotion decisions for at least six years after the initial assessment was made. We also find that initial assessments are positively associated with future performance at the outset of a player’s career, but the association becomes insignificant after a player accumulates on-the-job experience. We show that the weight on initial assessments for promotion decisions declines as additional on-the-job performance signals are observed, reflecting the …

The Influence Of Organisational Culture And Job Satisfaction On Emotional Intelligence And Organisational Performance Of Malaysian Administrative And Diplomatic Officers, Supramaniam Suganthi
Student Works (2020-2029)
As a natural instinct of survival in a competitive environment, organisations inherently aim to achieve high organisational performance. Due to constant global challenges and the volatile environment, organisations are accosted with various challenges. An analysis of Malaysia’s ranking in the IMD World Competitiveness report secured a 12th position in 2014, which dropped to the 24th position in 2017. As public servants play a pivotal part in meeting the competitiveness challenge of a country, this highlights a potential issue in the performance of the public service in improving the nation’s productivity. Hence, this thesis explores the effects of emotional intelligence on …

The Mediation Of Self-Efficacy Between Antecedents And Organisational Citizenship Behaviour In The Public Sector, Abdullah Meor Rashydan
Student Works (2020-2029)
Organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) has become popular among scholars in organisational behaviour, psychology, and management studies since it significantly contributes to the success of an organisation. Organisational citizenship behaviour plays an important role in organisational settings for its effectiveness and the efficiency of the services or operation provided. Empirical studies on OCB in recent years were mostly conducted in a Western context. However, there is a limit of providing extensive information and in-depth understanding of employee’s citizenship behaviour in Malaysia settings. This study attempts to narrow the gap in the past literature. In the public sector, OCB is highly valued …

Human Capital Is Not Enough: How Offshore Bpo Professionals Use Social Support To Deal With Strenuous Work Conditions, Jonathan W. Whitaker, Violet Ho, Sunil Mithas, Dongwon Lee
Management Faculty Publications
The past decade has witnessed explosive growth in the segment of information technology (IT) professionals who work in the offshore business process outsourcing (BPO) industry. BPO positions are highly regimented and standardized with coercive and normative controls to deter employees from deviating from prescribed work procedures and exercising independent judgment. Coping with these challenges requires a different set of skills than human capital and technical competencies that are discussed in most prior information systems (IS) research. This paper develops theory on the role of social support in employee compensation, and tests the theory using a unique data set of 8,000+ …
