Two Essays Examining Consumer Responses To Product And Service Failures, Sotires Pagiavlas 2020 University of South Carolina

Two Essays Examining Consumer Responses To Product And Service Failures, Sotires Pagiavlas

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is comprised of two essays that examine consumer responses to product and service failures. In essay 1, I use the U.S. automobile industry as a backdrop to investigate how consumers respond when their products experience a defect-related failure identified by the manufacturer that necessitates a recall. I develop a conceptual framework to test the impact of a regulator-initiated digital marketing campaign (DMC) on consumer compliance to product recalls. The empirical context is the launch of a nationwide DMC by the U.S. automobile industry’s regulator. The analysis spans 12 quarters of recall completion data pertaining to 296 recalls falling …

When And How Frontline Service Employee Authenticity Influences Purchase Intentions, Lynn Matthews, Meike Eilert, Les Carlson, James W. Gentry 2020 Wichita State University

When And How Frontline Service Employee Authenticity Influences Purchase Intentions, Lynn Matthews, Meike Eilert, Les Carlson, James W. Gentry

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

In this manuscript, we investigate the central role of perceived frontline service employee (FSE) authenticity and the process by which it impacts purchase intentions, taking into account the represented brand's authenticity. While brand authenticity has previously been shown to enhance consumer outcomes, we find that FSE authenticity is a separate significant predictor of purchase intentions. Further, we find that FSE authenticity enhances purchase intentions by increasing perceived trust and perceived quality. However, this finding only holds for brands that do not emphasize their authenticity, indicating that brand managers should differentially emphasize FSE authenticity based on their brand's positioning. Furthermore, we …

The Importance Of Business Plan Proficiency To Business School Graduates, Madeline Colclasure 2020 Liberty University

The Importance Of Business Plan Proficiency To Business School Graduates, Madeline Colclasure

Senior Honors Theses

Small businesses are one of the largest groups of employers in the United States. Success of these businesses is, therefore, very important to the economy at large. Entrepreneurs who write business plans, in general, receive more funding from third parties such as banks and venture capital firms and are more likely to be successful. Entrepreneurs who receive a business education and have the support of a mentor are also more likely to be successful in the long term. Incorporating business planning, and activities such as business plan competitions and building incubators on campus, enhance classroom learning.

Two Essays On Negotiations Between Entrepreneurs And Angel Investors, Aydin Selim Oksoy 2020 Old Dominion University

Two Essays On Negotiations Between Entrepreneurs And Angel Investors, Aydin Selim Oksoy

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

This dissertation has two essays examining negotiations between entrepreneurs and angel investors. In Essay 1, I study the dual roles of equity from the angel investor’s perspective, where the equity position sought in an embryonic firm creates two concerns. The first concern relates to the risks involved in generating returns from the initial capital investment. The second is a governance concern due to the challenges involved in managing future interactions between the firm and its environment. Because the angel investor is beholden to the entrepreneur for the proper execution of the embryonic firm’s strategy, this governance concern involves incentivizing the …

Dentistry And The Law: Some Legal Considerations When Selling A Practice, Dan Schulte JD 2020 Kerr Russell

Dentistry And The Law: Some Legal Considerations When Selling A Practice, Dan Schulte Jd

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

Selling a dental practice, whether due to a dentist's passing or a planned sale, requires careful legal considerations. Ensuring a successful sale involves understanding financial dynamics, representation warranties, and post-closing obligations. Special attention must be paid to post-sale employment agreements, indemnity clauses, and non-compete covenants. Unique to dental practice sales is the challenge of securing patient records as collateral due to ethical constraints. In cases of a dentist's demise, non-dentists can manage practice ownership temporarily, preserving its value by engaging dentists until lawful transfer is possible. Legal nuances in these scenarios demand strategic navigation for successful practice transfers.

Dentistry’S Supporting Role For Cancer Patients, Christopher J. Smiley 2020 Michigan Dental Association

Dentistry’S Supporting Role For Cancer Patients, Christopher J. Smiley

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

Cancer diagnosis overwhelms patients and caregivers. As the spouse of a patient with leukemia who received bone marrow transplant therapy, I share insights into the challenges these patients face. Oral healthcare professionals play a vital role during these trials. Dental teams, often at the oncology's behest, conduct comprehensive exams and treatments before cancer therapy starts. Providing timely and efficient dental care is essential to achieve clearance to proceed with cancer therapy. Dental infections can be catastrophic for these patients who may be immune compromised. Untreated oral issues could lead to hospitalization, jeopardizing treatment schedules. Advocating for patients' financial needs, often …

A Comparison Of Entrepreneurship: Uganda And The United States Of America, Jordan Killen

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In this preliminary research assignment I compared and contrasted entrepreneurship and what it means to be an entrepreneur or small business owner in the United States and Uganda as well as offer suggestions that could potentially strengthen the Ugandan economy using American business practices and solutions. I utilized both secondary sources and my own experiences and knowledge about small businesses and entrepreneurs in Uganda. This data is compared to both my own experiences in the United States as well as information provided by scholarly articles to provide a more complete and well-rounded comparison of the two countries. Uganda, being a …

Unpacking The Effects Of International Experience In Intercultural Negotiations, Chei Hwee Chua 2020 University of South Carolina

Unpacking The Effects Of International Experience In Intercultural Negotiations, Chei Hwee Chua

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines how international experience influences the outcomes of intercultural negotiations. Its main contributions lie in the novel and contextualized conceptualization of international experience and the development of a comprehensive theoretical model that unpacks the effects of international experience in intercultural negotiations. I propose that international experience is a multi-dimensional construct that encompasses four dimensions: breadth, depth, cultural distance, and cultural heterogeneity. I argue that experiences abroad develop and strengthen individuals’ intercultural competence, psychological capital and global identity, which in turn positively influence the outcomes of intercultural negotiations, i.e., they mediate the relationship between international experience and intercultural negotiation …

Sticks And Stones May Break My Bones: Social Undermining As Social Influence, Jason Kautz 2020 University of South Carolina

Sticks And Stones May Break My Bones: Social Undermining As Social Influence, Jason Kautz

Theses and Dissertations

The current social undermining literature suggests the important role of the witness in determining the negative impact on the victim. However, the literature has yet to explicitly explore the witness’ role in social undermining. In this dissertation, I integrate theory and research on social influence and emotions to develop a framework that suggests social undermining be considered a form of social influence. This framework allows for the exploration of the witness’ sense-making process following a social undermining event along with the accumulated effects of repeated exposure to a series of social undermining events. I propose that social undermining influences witness …

Serving As A Backup Plan: Accounting Reserves And Their Impact On Managerial Risk-Taking, Kun Lui 2020 University of South Carolina

Serving As A Backup Plan: Accounting Reserves And Their Impact On Managerial Risk-Taking, Kun Lui

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines how accounting reserves influence firms’ internal decisions. In particular, this study investigates whether and how reserves currently reported in a firm’s balance sheet affect managerial risk-taking in the making of capital investment decisions. The experimental results show that firm managers are more likely to take risks in the making of capital investment decisions when the amount of reserves is large compared with when it is small. Additionally, the amount of reserves influences managerial risk-taking through sequentially influencing managers’ perceived risks of missing relevant earnings targets and managers’ perceived risks of investing in risky capital investment options. These …

A New Generation Of Workers: Preparing For Generation Z In The Workplace, Kendra Harris 2020 University of South Carolina - Columbia

A New Generation Of Workers: Preparing For Generation Z In The Workplace, Kendra Harris

Senior Theses

A new generational wave has begun to enter the workforce. The oldest members of Generation Z, those approximately at the age of 25 and below, have recently begun their careers. In the past few years, some changes have been made to work environments, like constructing gyms and daycares at workplaces, expanding the options for work at home programs, and firms hosting social events to attract top, young talent. Some of these actions were to appease Generation Y (Millennials), but some, whether the intent was known or not, will be very pleasing and beneficial to Generation Z. However, Generation Y and …

Operational Drivers Of Hospital And Physician Adaptation To Industry Change, Justin Taylor Kistler 2020 University of South Carolina

Operational Drivers Of Hospital And Physician Adaptation To Industry Change, Justin Taylor Kistler

Theses and Dissertations

Hospitals and physicians are often required to adapt their operations in response to macro changes in their industry environment. This dissertation examines the operational factors which influence and incentivize changes in hospital and physician operating performance. The first essay in this dissertation investigates how legislative political support and competition in the area in which a hospital operates influences hospitals’ investments and commitment to complying with performance mandates implemented by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) legislation in the United States. Leveraging United States hospital performance data from 2007 to 2014, results indicate a differential impact of government ideology …

The Effect Of Audit Procedure Extent And Precision On Auditors’ Skeptical Judgments, Sarah Alexis Judge 2020 University of South Carolina

The Effect Of Audit Procedure Extent And Precision On Auditors’ Skeptical Judgments, Sarah Alexis Judge

Theses and Dissertations

I investigate how the extent and precision of an audit procedure influence auditors’ responses to errors. The results suggest that while audit procedures with expanded extents are beneficial, this benefit is influenced by the presence of false positives. Specifically, I predict and find that as the extent of an audit procedure expands, auditors will be more likely to recommend audit adjustments. However, this effect is moderated by the presence of false positives. When false positives are absent, auditors are more likely to recommend an adjustment when they use a large extent procedure, however when false positives are present, there is …

Engineering Management Competencies: A Framework For Present And Future Engineering Environments, Christopher Vaughn Barrett

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Managing and directing engineering requires engineering management competencies. Although perspectives may differ concerning competencies for engineering management, identifying competencies can direct and improve management. The purpose of this research is to develop a framework of competencies for engineering managers using an inductive research design. Development of this engineering management competency framework involves an exploration of three primary research questions. The first question is ‘What are the current competencies for engineering managers?’ The response to this question provides a basis for the current state of competencies for engineering managers. The second research question, ‘What are future engineering management competencies based on …

Dod Mission Engineering And Integration Explorative-Exploitative Architecture For Technology Innovation, Jose L. Bricio-Neto

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The ability of U.S. Department of Defense to achieve timely innovation in support of U.S. National Defense and Military Strategies continues to increase in significance. The growing challenges in U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) technological innovation in a context of global security and rapid pace of global competitiveness continue to reveal many shortcomings in current weapon systems development and acquisition practice. As the pace of technological innovation is accelerating, the DoD faces the challenge that the same disruptive technological advances are also being made available to or developed by its adversaries. Based on literature review, no innovation system theory exists …
