Creating Democratic Spaces For Addressing Racism On College Campuses: The Example Of Dialogue To Change At Oklahoma State University, Martha McCoy 2021 Everyday Democracy

Creating Democratic Spaces For Addressing Racism On College Campuses: The Example Of Dialogue To Change At Oklahoma State University, Martha Mccoy

eJournal of Public Affairs

Polarizing rhetoric, racist violence, and racial inequality continue to cast a dark shadow over democracy and threaten to further divide our communities. How our country moves forward in this time is under consideration by practitioners, scholars, and everyday people alike. This article begins by reviewing the Dialogue to Change approach Everyday Democracy has developed to expand opportunities for the people of our country to grapple with racism together, across racial backgrounds, and then work with each other and public officials to create positive, equitable change at local, state, and national levels. The second part of the article looks at the …

King's Dream Is Not Achieved As Nebraska Carries Out Assaults On Democracy, Preston Love Jr.

Black Studies Faculty Publications

I reflect on the iconic speech of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the summer of 1963, where he spoke of his famous dream. Embedded in that wonderful soliloquy are the dreams of freedom, justice and equality. All dreams have a commonality: The dreamer wakes up.

Black Magic & White Supremacy: Witchcraft As An Allegory For Race And Power, Nicholas Charles Peters 2021 Portland State University

Black Magic & White Supremacy: Witchcraft As An Allegory For Race And Power, Nicholas Charles Peters

University Honors Theses

This paper examines dramatic representations of witchcraft in contemporary television, and their roots in stereotypes from 17th century dramas, exploring the function of witchcraft as an allegory for race and power in America. Television is a form of cultural media that can explore these stereotypes and create representation that influences the audience's perception of society, and can function as a call to action for social justice.

Review Of Lisa Kemmerer's Sister Species: Women, Animals, And Social Justice, Marine Lercier 2021 Autonomous University of Barcelona

Review Of Lisa Kemmerer's Sister Species: Women, Animals, And Social Justice, Marine Lercier

Between the Species

What do we have in common with animals, and what do these women have in common? We are Sister Species, if not sisters at all. Lisa Kemmerer invites us to realize that we are more alike than different and to become aware of what our animal brothers and especially sisters experience: the suffering they endure because of our absurd inconsistencies and oppositions - even within the animal rights movement, often unbeknownst to us. The goal: more effective discourse and action, educating us to the other in the face of a norm imposed by a power, a discourse of normalization …

Making Or Creating Orcs: How Thorinsmut's Free Orcs Au Writes Back To Tolkien, Robin A. Reid Dr. 2021 Independent Scholar

Making Or Creating Orcs: How Thorinsmut's Free Orcs Au Writes Back To Tolkien, Robin A. Reid Dr.

Journal of Tolkien Research

"Making or Creating Orcs" is a close reading of an Alternate University fan fiction, "The Free Orcs AU," by Thorinsmut, which is based on the premise that Erebor was not attacked by Smaug and that some Orcs have fought and freed themselves from Sauron and have established a homeland in Gundabad. Working in the context of the scholarship on racist stereotypes relating to Tolkien's Orcs, I argue that Thorinsmut is able to "write back" to colonial narratives (Baker) through the AU premise and the associated deletions and transformations of Tolkien's characterizations, plot, setting, and themes in The Hobbit and The …

Black Nationalism: A Path To Peace, Adrianna T. Davis

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

Black nationalism: A path to peace

An increased interest in Black Nationalism has emerged in recent years. It is generally agreed that the goal of the Black Nationalist movement is to liberate black people from oppression in all its forms. Though the Black Nationalist movement began in the early nineteenth century, the supporters have not reached their goal (Blake, 1969). Systemic racism in the United States continues to be pervasive in our modern society. As such, it is evident that the liberation of the black community requires action. To date, there have been numerous expressions of nonviolent action such as …

Crises Beyond Nationalities, J P. Linstroth 2021 Barry University

Crises Beyond Nationalities, J P. Linstroth

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

The aim of my presentation titled, Crises Beyond Nationalities, is to discuss the topics of “immigration and racism”, “nationalism and terrorism”, “genocide”, “racial trauma”, “biology, neuroscience, and humanity”, and “empathy, love, and peace” so as not only to theorize about these complex issues but to point to ways forward with some progressive thinking. If the topics of “racism and immigration” are isolated without discussing their broader associations such as with nationalism and violence, or in the most extreme with genocide, then the arguments are not broad enough. As an anthropologist and peace activist, it is important to analyze such …

The Failures Of Power-Sharing Agreements And The Necessity For Trust Building: The Case Of The South Sudan Peace Process, Sam A. Onapa, Sam Angulo Onapa, PhD 2021 University of New England

The Failures Of Power-Sharing Agreements And The Necessity For Trust Building: The Case Of The South Sudan Peace Process, Sam A. Onapa, Sam Angulo Onapa, Phd

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

Using a case study of the South Sudan peace process, the proposal discusses the failures of power-sharing agreements after violent conflicts and the role of trust building in bridging the gap.

It explores various forms of institutional trust mechanisms in building both impersonal and interpersonal trust following estranged political relationships. It goes further to examine transitional justice mechanisms as a basis for trust-building to address the estrangement in political relationships towards sustainable power sharing agreements.

#Reclaiming My Time: Structural Violence, Racial Trauma And The Case For A Transformative Healing Justice For Black Women Movement Actors, Shaneda L. Destine

Societies Without Borders

This research evaluates the intra-movement conflicts and political praxis of 30 black movement actors, ages 18-40 years old from September to December 2016, in the District of Columbia and Maryland in the United States (Crenshaw et al, 2015). Intersectional theory guides this research to outline the relationship of black women movement actors’ struggles within movement spaces and their approach to a transformative healing justice. Themes arise about intra-movement conflicts as well as the importance of self-care and political education. Evidence suggests a level of healing justice in some organizations, but less political education. Implications for social movement praxis are discussed.

Shikata Ga Nai: Statelessness And Sacrifice For Japanese-American Volunteers During The Second World War, Kenzo E. Okazaki

Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal

Through a Philosophical analysis of the nature of Internment Camps as well as oral histories of veterans who volunteered to serve in the US military from the camps, this paper will argue that the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII was an event that the Supreme Court and surrounding legal discourse placed outside of legal jurisdiction. Those within the camps were thus condemned to a life lacking political qualification and juridical personhood. Faced with the dangers of this condition, interned Japanese Americans who served in the U.S. Army consciously laid claim to the American political community through the sacrifice of …

A Reimagining Of The Chacoan World, Larry Benson, Richard W. Loose 2021 University of Colorado at Boulder

A Reimagining Of The Chacoan World, Larry Benson, Richard W. Loose

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A new paradigm of the Chacoan world is presented, wherein Chaco Canyon is considered to be a mostly unoccupied architectural complex that functioned primarily as a pilgrimage destination. Chaco was the political, religious, and social focal point of people living in outlying regions. The resident population of the Canyon consisted of a small number of caretakers, charged with maintaining great house structures, food supplies, and their ceremonial contents. Chacoan chiefdoms were mostly located in large, well-watered, agriculturally-based communities situated at the base of mountains that ring the San Juan Basin, e.g., the Chuskas. Chiefly elites lived year-round in those areas, …

Women, Peace And Security In Zimbabwe - The Case Of Conflict In Non War Zones, Rutendo Chabikwa 2021 University of Oxford

Women, Peace And Security In Zimbabwe - The Case Of Conflict In Non War Zones, Rutendo Chabikwa

Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies

The Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda is the United Nation’s (UN) key policy instrument for addressing gender violence in conflict zones. However, the agenda has been preoccupied with “hot” conflicts, and its application and relevance to sustained, but “low level” conflict situations is poorly conceptualized. This research considers this issue through a case study of Zimbabwe since 2000. I make the case for broadening the understanding of conflict as found in the WPS agenda.

This paper addresses the question: ‘How does the case of Zimbabwe exemplify the need for a broader understanding of conflict within the WPS agenda as …

What Do You Think She’S Gonna Do With A Set Of Real Claws?: Gender, Race, And Sexuality In Onscreen Portrayals Of Women Werewolves, Ashleigh K. Williams 2021 CUNY Graduate Center

What Do You Think She’S Gonna Do With A Set Of Real Claws?: Gender, Race, And Sexuality In Onscreen Portrayals Of Women Werewolves, Ashleigh K. Williams

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis analyzes 13 disparate portrayals of werewolfism in film and television as they relate to uncontrolled and uncontrollable femininity. A necessary component of this project is the visual assemblage: my findings are displayed in the format of a zine, in an attempt to capture the bright, furious, aggressive sensory experience of witnessing women becoming werewolves onscreen. Research questions include: How are conventionally masculine werewolf markers feminized in werewolf narratives? How are the women in these pieces of media ultimately punished for embodying creatures that aren’t feminine enough, or are too feminine in exactly the wrong ways? Many she-wolf centered …
