Gone With The Wind: The Confederacy's Trojan Horse, Skyler J. Shipp
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
This paper analyzes the film Gone with the Wind as a piece of Southern nationalist propaganda. This includes an exploration of the earlier Southern nationalist film Birth of a Nation, as well as a comparison to Margaret Mitchell’s 1936 novel Gone with the Wind. In my analysis of Gone with the Wind’s production process, including memos between producer David O. Selznick and other members of the production team, I find that Selznick maintained tight control over the film’s production and was extremely concerned with maintaining positive publicity for his film. This led him to allow a few seemingly progressive …

Towards The Non-Spectacle: Responses To Necropolitics In The Artwork Of Teresa Margolles And Maya Watanabe, Leslie Anne Condon
Masters Theses
How do we engage with artwork that addresses complicated histories
of colonialism and political violence, specifically intangible and
incomprehensible violence? Mexican artist Teresa Margolles’ 2005 work, Lote
Bravo, is named after and composed of the soil from a mass grave site
discovered in 1995 in the southeastern corner of Ciudad Juárez, a city known
internationally for the femicide that has continued to haunt its streets and
peripheries since the 1990s. Peruvian filmmaker Maya Watanabe’s 2019 film
Liminal cinematically documents the official exhumation of two mass graves
in the Ayacucho and Huánuco regions of the Andes highlands, where
thousands of …

Myth, Murder, And Mayhem: Discerning The ‘Other’ In Our Flag Means Death, Sara Brown
Mythopoeic Society Seminar Proceedings
Although the television series Our Flag Means Death presents on the surface as a romantic comedy, it is enhanced by mythic elements that infuse the narrative with a clear sense of the fantastic. Here, the pirates exist in a Secondary World that openly draws upon the Primary (both in terms of historiography and legend); hence 18th-century piracy and British colonialism can interact seamlessly with human-to-animal-transformations (paying homage to the Greek myth of Ceyx and Alcyone) without seeming either disconcerting or anomalous – all co-exist comfortably in Faerie. OFMD both inverts and deconstructs mythopoeia; the Primary World myths of the Gentleman …

Recasting Gender Roles: A Study Of Indian Television Commercials (2011– 2020), Himika Akram, Alicia Mason
Faculty Submissions
On media, television commercials (TVCs) play a significant role in shaping societal perceptions of gender roles. This study examines gender depictions in Indian TVCs, focusing on key dimensions such as gender ratio in primary characters, voiceovers, settings (home, outdoor, workplace), and product categories. A content analysis of 120 TVCs from Indian brands (2011–2020) was conducted, with coding performed by the researcher. Findings reveal that men were primary characters in 54.6% of the advertisements, while women featured in 45.4%. Male voiceovers dominated at 70.1%, compared to 29.9% for females. Women were portrayed in home settings in 66.7% of TVCs, while men …

For The Love Of Subtitling: Analysing The Challenges In Audio-Visual Translations Of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani, Haritima Sharma
Living in Languages
Any form of audio-visual media utilises specific stylistic elements in order to represent the reality within which the media form is situated. These representations occur through the language and iconography of the media form, which works on stereotypical features that the audience can easily identify. Forming a pivotal part of the media, these representations must be rendered in the translations for a linguistically and culturally diverse audience. Audio-Visual Translation (AVT) has been used since the 1930s to make media accessible. Of the various modalities, subtitling has emerged as the most widespread mode of AVT due to time and cost benefits. …

Review Of: Women Talking [Film]—Sarah Polley, Rebecca Janzen
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
Women Talking (directed by Sarah Polley) is a film that was released in 2022 and is based on Miriam Toews’ 2018 novel of the same name. Both the film and the novel are, in turn, based on events that took place in the early 2000s in Manitoba Colony, Bolivia, where Old Colony Mennonite men raped and assaulted women and girls in their own community. This review contextualizes the movie by explaining Old Colony Mennonite beliefs, religious practices, and migrations, and then it summarizes the film and offers some thoughts about outsiders’ fascination with the film. Review Of: Fooling With The Amish: Amish Mafia, Entertaining Fakery, And The Evolution Of Reality Tv—Dirk Eitzen, Stewart M. Hoover
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
In a way, this book takes on a rather banal and straightforward task: a scholarly account of the very curious phenomenon known as “Amish Reality Television.” This genre is an easy mark for critique by the serious-minded scholar or observer of contemporary religion. These programs, including Amish in the City, Breaking Amish, Return to Amish, and Amish Mafia (there are others) are far from authentic representations of their subject matter, and for anyone who knows much about Amish or Pennsylvania German culture, the poetic license of these productions is obvious. Amish culture and life have always been open to this …

Theses and Dissertations
Throughout this text, David Moy will discuss the inner working of his investigation on image overload and materialization. Through tactics of blurring, erasure, and layering he achieves obfuscation in his printed media. In doing so, he questions the compounding nature of image/text that negate themselves in the larger context of time in the digital age.

Free Fall, a mixed media project, addresses the horrifying cases of infant abduction experienced in the country of Georgia over the last 40-50 years, and how the nation's systemic issue became one of the causes of illegal child trafficking in the country. The project features an infant room setting with video projections, TV screens with interviews, and custom sound effects. The setting of Free Fall is a visual metaphor of the experiences of those affected by the abductions and illegal child trafficking drawing from the iconography of early childhood. Ultimately, my installation seeks to advocate for justice and support …
