Korea's history has had a deeply influential and significant impact on its modern language, and concomitantly, on the country's modern poetry and prose. Despite the artistic and literary value, there is a substantial lack of English translations available for Korean works. The continued rapid development of Korean and its considerably different grammar and syntax often pose difficulties for English translators. Korean poetry, specifically, follows a form unfamiliar to English readers which makes interpretation for translation challenging. The Moffett Collection on Korean Church History and Asian Christianity (Moffett Korea Collection) is housed in the Theodore Sedgwick Wright Library at Princeton Theological Seminary, New Jersey. Samuel Hugh Moffett (1916–2015, H. Moffett, Ma Samrak in Korean) and his wife Eileen Flower Moffett (1928– ) officially gifted the collection to the library on March 16, 1994.  The collection consists of personal papers of the couple, manuscripts, publications, photographs, clippings, and objects they brought from Korea. The 230 boxes in the “Manuscript Collection” are classified into five series, each corresponding to the biography, writings, and collected materials about Samuel Austin Moffett …

"Comfort women" refers to the estimated 80,000 to 200,000 women who were forced to serve the Japanese imperial army sexually, physically, and mentally during WWII in and beyond the Asia-Pacific region. Since 1992, Korean activists have held the Wednesday Demonstration, which is the weekly protest in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul, to call for an official apology and legal compensation from the Japanese government. Since 2011, Korean activists have also installed comfort woman statues in and outside of South Korea.

Today, Korean Hip-Hop (KHH) has been slowly moving beyond a localized pop culture through the internet and media. This study finds that rhyming patterns in KHH are much more complex than prior research suggests. Especially, this study focuses on an evolution of Korean Hip-Hop through the time such as since 1989 to 2015. Intergenerational support refers to financial support and emotional support between parents and children. In South Korea and China, intergenerational support is significant in family relationships. This study examines the impact of intergenerational support influencing the elderly decision to work through an empirical research approach using data from CHARLS (China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study) and KLSoA (Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging). The Logit results showed that in South Korea, children’s financial support to parents and emotional communication between generations significantly impacted the elderly’s work choices. In China, the frequency of meetings between parents and children impacts the elderly’s work choices. …

The thesis analyzes the migration of Koreans to the Perm region during the Korean enlightenment period. To achieve this goal, the theory of segmental migration was chosen, a hermeneutic approach and discourse analysis were used to analyze archival sources, as well as statistical methods and a database to study the social status of migrants and a comparative method to identify the characteristics of migration. The study was carried out using sources from the Perm State Archive, 1904-1910. This research examines how the historical Korean drama "Under the Queen's Umbrella" (2022) portrays modern Korean society. By comparing the societal depictions within the drama with contemporary Korean society, it analyzes the benefits and drawbacks of using historical dramas to represent modern social issues. The researcher primarily uses Stuart Hall's theory of representation as a framework. The study found that the scriptwriter of the drama created a representation of modern Korean phenomena through a cross-temporal representation, highlighting the intense competition within the education system, the dynamics of parental and family institutions, and human rights issues. It outlines how Buddhist linguistic conventions can give rise to an unpredictability in reference work, how its historical textual practices can complicate collections development, and how Buddhist temple archive management can make traditional approaches to research advising unreliable. It also proposes that these challenges provide distinct opportunities for collaboration across Chinese, Japanese, and Korean areas of bibliographic coverage. This presentation takes a look at the suicide rates among South Korean youth ages 15 to 19, comparing the numbers to those of the same age range in the United States. We will look at the raw numbers, go over similarities and differences, and end with contributing factors for both groups. Particular focus will be on how South Korea is considered to have the best education system in the world and the impact that fact has on the young people going through it.

“A History Of Heartache”: Korean Reunification Through The Eyes Of Giseong Sedae, Johanna Avalyn Cooper

In this thesis, I analyze answers provided by middle-aged South Koreans (Giseong Sedae, ages 40 to 69) to determine what factors have influenced this generation’s perceptions of Korean reunification. Utilizing a survey and interviews, I first measure the general views of South Korean participants within this age range. The survey results show that the majority of respondents want Peaceful Coexistence reunification without foreign influence. In interviews, participants’ answers are divided into six main factors that affect their views of reunification which include hesitancies toward reunification, the tenacity of Han Minjok, familial ties to division, anti-communist education, political …

This thesis project explores the motivations behind the bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) renegotiation between Chile and South Korea. Existing studies have examined the reasons and outcomes of creating the initial Chile-South Korea FTA, but they have not focused on renegotiations between the two countries. A few investigations on renegotiations have focused on diversifying their exports and expanding their markets in each other's regions. However, most research lacks further exploration of both countries' market security concerns. Min Jin Lee's novel Pachinko (2017) portrays the historically based lives of a displaced Korean family during Japan's colonization of Korea from 1905-1945. The novel's attention to the ways that colonial endeavors complicate Confucian family and national structures exemplifies the interrelation between gender and racial oppression facing Lee's Korean women in both the public and private domain.

However, by centering female voices all too often silenced, Lee also depicts resistance modes that subvert such oppression. In this review, we shed light on two themes that we capture from the movie: tensions and compromises in chasing the American dream of immigrants. Hanbok is the traditional fashion of South Korea, and literally translates to “Korean clothing.” Once worn every day, today hanbok is reserved for special occasions and holidays; however new “modern” versions of the attire are becoming more and more popular for everyday wear. This new iteration of the traditional clothing created a new vernacular of Korean nationalism and “Koreanness” through the incorporation of modern fashion trends and traditional Korean aesthetics.
