Chains is a poem that was inspired by the events surrounding the Steubenville Rape Case, and it is my interpretation of what the victim could have been feeling. The poem was written as a way for me to try to understand how something like this could have happened.

Ahead a Wild Fire is a collection of poems which investigate humanity's relationship with science, space, and himself—the dichotomy between the coldness (literal and figurative) of those endeavors and the warmth of a home we take for granted—the exploration of how we fit in as individuals and as a species within the larger context—a shifting away from reliance on a deity and human exceptionalism. We are special, not because we are the top of the food chain, but because we harbor love and hope.

An Idea of Liberation in the Suburbs uses traditional forms such as haiku, haibun, sestina, pantoum, villanelle and original invented forms, but also includes free-verse litany, epistolary and prose poems. The poems vary in the use of lyric and narrative modes. The subjects and themes concern religion, spirituality, philosophy, language play, the mind and inquiries into the nature of thinking.

In my current PhD study, Creative River Journeys, I use the metaphor of the river as a data capture tool when interviewing artist-researchers about their experiences of conducting creative practice within a university context. My use of the river functions as a metaphor for the creative process. I have adapted the River Journey tool from its previous use as a map of teacher identity and professional development, and in a project about children’s musical experience. My honors senior thesis, a creative project entitled Separate Spaces, is a collection of fourteen poems that reflects on trauma, loss, interpersonal relationships, and nature. Many of the poems are dramatic monologues, which means that they are written in a voice that is distinctly not my own. This allows me to portray a range of extreme voices, including a survivor of the bombing of Hiroshima, a U.S. veteran of the Iraq War, and murderer Perry Smith.
