Letter To My 12 Year-Old Self, Iris (Pettie) Perkins 2021 Old Dominion University

Letter To My 12 Year-Old Self, Iris (Pettie) Perkins

Poetry Slam 2021

"Letter to My 12 Year-Old Self" is a self reflection piece and I just wanted to tell people what kind of advice that I would have liked to have when I was growing up.

Exam, Chera Broadnax 2021 Old Dominion University

Exam, Chera Broadnax

Poetry Slam 2021

This poem was inspired by the systemic violence experienced by people of color. No matter how much schooling I have, or my children have, there is nothing that I can do to protect them.

Just The Ones That Made The News, Rachel R. Mantos

Poetry Slam 2021

"Just the ones that made the News" was written in response to the constant news of mass shootings that take place in the United States. The last two stanzas were added a year after the original draft of the poem when there was a mass shooting in my hometown of Virginia Beach.

Just One Story, Chera Broadnax 2021 Old Dominion University

The poem is about the trepidation I experience regarding being a woman of color in the field of education.

Van Gogh, Rachel R. Mantos 2021 Old Dominion University

Van Gogh, Rachel R. Mantos

Poetry Slam 2021

"Van Gogh" is a personal response to the way I've seen depression and mental illness affect many artists I look up to and how they dealt with these issues through their art. I've dealt with this for many years myself and reached a point where I didn't want to be surrounded in sadness and negativity, and wanted to remember that while it can be cathartic and helpful to write about our pain, it's important not to lose sight of all the beauty and joy in life as well, which is just as valuable subject material.

Hell Hath No Fury Like A Woman Scorned, Rachel R. Mantos 2021 Old Dominion University

Hell Hath No Fury Like A Woman Scorned, Rachel R. Mantos

Poetry Slam 2021

"Hell Hath No Fury Like A Woman Scorned" was an exploration of female anger and an experiment with the sonnet form of poetry.

Skills, Iris (Pettie) Perkins

Poetry Slam 2021

"Skills" is a poem that was written the night before the slam. I looked up the word "resilient" and I just wondered how I could convey that everyone can be resilient, it just takes baby steps and small victories.
