I'm writing about this night I had an asthma attack back home over winter break. I awoke in the middle of the night unable to breathe so I went to my bathroom to sit in the shower and breathe in the humid air to help open up my lungs. While I was sitting there the humidity and water reminded me of Puerto Rico (Borinquen in Taino) and my memories of the island and thoughts of my ancestral connection to the land gave me comfort. The idea that I could travel there just by simply turning on the faucet and sitting …

As Your Writing And Reading Teacher, Jean Prokott
Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal
AS YOUR WRITING & READING TEACHER, and as a poetry enthusiast (fangirl), I was thinking about you yesterday as I watched Amanda Gorman perform her poem at Biden's inauguration, and then I was really thinking about you, students, as I watched Anderson Cooper interview her last night. I hope so much that you heard the poem, and I would truly love for you to watch the interview: she talks about the task to write a poem, the feel of words over images, the research she did from history and culture to pull this poem together. It is a feat that …

The Lizard King is a nickname for Jim Morrison, singer with the Doors. He compared himself to a comet, and this poem alludes to this image. Morrison was very young when he died - 27 years old. He was the first rock star to become so famous. His life was very short and explosive, like the fireworks that the author of this poem describes.
