"That nervous anticipation, itching the palms of my hands as I sit grimly in the back right corner of the city bus, watching the rain slide down the windows. Nothing could be worse than this feeling of being trapped and unable to see outside. And, my body being propelled by something other than my legs, creating a nauseous stir in the pit of my stomach, and rising up to my throat. If only I weren't surrounded by strangers."

"It was cold outside and puddles of fresh rain were scattered along the sidewalk in front of 1400 Sycamore Drive. It was an hour past midnight. red and blue lights painted the fog and sirens pierced the silence of the neighborhood. There was a crowd of people being held off by the police with the lazy look of a cat in their eyes. Bill Ward weaved his way through the crowd, but was stopped by an officer at behind the bright yellow tape."

Richard Wright’s haiku — both the 4,000 he wrote at the end of his life and the 817 he selected for inclusion in Haiku: This Other World (1998) — remain something of an enigma in his larger oeuvre; critics variously position them as a continuation of his earlier thematic concerns in a different literary form, an aesthetic departure from the racialized limitations imposed upon his earlier work, or one of several positions in between. My thesis explores the history of Roller Derby, its modern revival, and the way that it changes the lives of the women who play it. From October 2009 to March 2011, I conducted ethnographic research and interviews with the Red Stick Roller Derby in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. My perspective is that of an observer turned player, and the piece centers around my own story of personal transformation. This work is part cultural history, part ethnography, and part memoir, written from an explicitly feminist perspective.

This novella is a fictional account of a journalist's struggle with her own integrity as it relates to her job covering the crime beat and as a victim of a brutal crime. The story explores how Kendra Hall's attack changes her perspective of the people she covers on a daily basis and resurrects a lesson about justice taught to her by her police detective grandfather, who caused her to go into a career in police reporting in the first place. Ambientes: New Queer Latino Writing seeks to provide a timely and representative archive of queer Latino literary and cultural memory in order to enact a more inclusive "American" literary canon that can apprehend the present and the future of queer Latino literary practice. In both Keywords (Williams 1983a) and New Keywords (Bennett, Grossberg, and Morris 2005), "education" (Keywords has "educate") is primarily an institutional practice, which, after the late eighteenth century, is increasingly formalized and universalized in Western countries. Bearing the twin senses of "to lead forth" (from the Latin educare) and "to bring up" (from the Latin educare), "education" appears chiefly as an action practiced by adults on children. The Oxford English Dictionary thus defines the terms as "the systematic instruction, schooling, or training given to the young in preparation for the work of life."
