My first collection of poetry, Raise the Still Rabbit, explores the literal landscape we live in, the themes of language and lyric, as well as the relationships between people. The poems are rooted in the experiential, the moments when the act of writing becomes a navigation of the various themes of the local environment, cohabitation between individual people, and the geography of the poems' content and textual construction. Navigating these themes, the poems attempt to dissolve the illusory barriers that appear to separate subjects such as the interior of a home from the desert surrounding it. In this collection, …

The Grotesque Menagerie is an exploration of domestic and gender roles of the American West. The burlesque and the grotesque are used as the dissection tools throughout this manuscript to examine these roles, and in so doing pervert both the ideal and the abject. As the author, these poetic explorations and dissections leave me stuck in an odd androgyny: I am suspect of my own feminist preclusions and oddly obliged to interact with the established patriarchal tropes of the western poetic cannon. The problem presented in Le Spleen D’Ash is of identity, paralysis, and the Lyric. “Ash” serves as a representation of traditional connotations—a fire’s remains, a resurrection, the ash tree—as well as a symbol for the Lyric “I” in the poems: a plea toward my own voice in the manuscript. Placing honestly into a book is normal, and, when combined with abstract ideas, builds a foreign yet simultaneously comfortable frame for the poems. The presence of a named speaker, Ash, is a common practice, but the fact that my speaker is also metaphorically complex adds further dimensions.

This thesis examines Geoffrey Chaucer’s pioneering work as a distinctly English poet who wrote against the grain of French literary influence in the Middle Ages. Analyzing works such as The Parlement of Fowls and The Canterbury Tales, this thesis marks Chaucer as an English original, writing on everything from love and class to literature and politics. Furthermore, it argues Chaucer’s influence in making Britain into a more mature nation distinct from mainland Europe, and discusses how The Parlement of Fowls prepared Chaucer for his future writing.

Role Play is a non-fiction essay in which Olivia Snider weaves together specific researched examples from the Stanford Prison experiment with her own narrative of her experience in Rappahannock Regional Jail. Balancing vivid scenes of memoir with speculative re-creations of the events of the Stanford Prison Experiment, Snider constructs an essay that is at once intensely personal and highly credible. She intersperses second-person voice as a link between the experiment and her own experience throughout the essay, and as a means to draw the reader in and invest him in the narrative.
