The young men in The Boys’ Republic live in a world that is continually falling apart. Their houses collapse into sinkholes, forest fires carve out chunks of their towns, plague spreads through their communes, the money runs out on the construction project where they work. This decay mirrors their own collapsing identities, as they are forced to question their mastery of nature, their nostalgia for their youth, their relationships with others, and the value of masculinity itself. Both as a student of theatre and, eventually, as a professional practitioner, it has long been apparent to me that there is a dearth of reference material on what has become one of the modern theatre’s most important elements: the pause. Actors, directors and playwrights can only interpret the word ‘pause’ according to their own experience and its meaning remains nebulous, even after agreement has been reached in a specific context. This thesis comprises a novel, ‘Lilac Tractors’ and an essay, ‘Intersections among psychiatry, madness, sexuality and feminism in ‘Lilac Tractors’’. The novel focuses on the relationship of a married couple, Gary, a fly-in, fly-out rig worker, and Sharon, a mature-age university student studying psychology. They live together in Perth’s north at the turn of the twenty-first century, as the outer suburbs are beginning to sprawl. Gary has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Sharon finds that her growing knowledge of the condition increases her annoyance with him, rather than her compassion. This project is comprised of a creative work and accompanying exegesis. The creative work is a collection of poetry which examines the history and ecology of the wetlands and river systems of the Swan Coastal Plain, and which utilises the practice of walking as a research methodology. For the creative practitioner walking reintroduces the body as a fundamental definer of experience, placing the investigation centrally in the corporeal self, using the physical senses as investigative tools of enquiry. The poems in this thesis explore ideas of habitation, animality, humanity, community, and the inevitable disconnection experienced by the lack of communication between the interior and exterior. These poems attempt to construct the in between. The "I" character of these poems lives with several animals and insects throughout the sequence of these poems. The "I" character identifies something valuable in these beings, something unknowable outside the realm of physical coexistence. The same can be said of the animals, who seem to find comfort, sustenance, and kinship with the "I" character. The "house" becomes a blending of the interior and exterior, …

Old Crow and Men is a novel about a young woman's coming of age. The story takes place in the hometown of the protagonist, and depicts a number of relationships she has with men over a period of eight years. Some of these relationships are with family members, some are friendships, and others are romantic. The narrative moves along based on the relationships the protagonist encounters and the effects they have on her.

The majority of these poems were inspired by actual small-town figures and instances, so the pairing down of narrative substance and the varying rhythm of common language are applied throughout. For this reason, most of the poems are written in free verse. One exception is a single poem that is near Tanka; that poem and a few other concept poems included are a bit more universal in content and are without the same colorations of fixed time and place, drifters that came to the mindscape of this collection.

Al señalar el peso de las relaciones sociales y políticas que determinaron su condición de exiliados, dice la autora: Pero ellos son poetas y ya sabemos que el oficio no está institucionalizado porque el poema no tiene casa, es más, no requiere Casa más allá de la Metáfora que él mismo cre.
