Miguel, a peasant, journeys to Pueblo Santa Cruz for food, redemption, and a couple of cervezas at the Cantina de los Remedios. While at the Cantina, he becomes fascinated by an old guitar, La llorona, hanging upon the wall. The Cantina's owner, Pedrito, tells him of its origins, and the man who played it -- Rodrigo, perhaps the greatest singer-songwriter to have hailed from Pueblo Santa Cruz, but who mysteriously disappeared following a fateful love affair, leaving La llorona behind.

This thesis investigates Welty's four short story collections and treats the stories as separate entities that are intimately connected to each other by a theme that evolves over and yet transcends the forty odd years that seem to separate them--namely Welty's theme of male homosexual desire. I will examine Welty's story collections using a theoretical framework that incorporates a history of homosexuality in the South and investigates such themes as travel, identity, reactions to heterosexual coupling, and traces Welty's own experiences through the experiences of her fictional male characters. Set in a fictional town on the coast of Georgia in July of 1972, Cumberland is the story of two fifteen-year-old twin sisters, Ansel and Isabel (“Izzy”) Mackenzie, who have lived with their frugal, eccentric grandmother since the age of eight when their parents were killed in a car accident and Isabel was paralyzed. Over the years, the burden of caring for her sister has fallen increasingly on Ansel. My thesis is a collection of literary short stories, many of which spring from my life experiences: people I've known, places I lived, jobs I worked, or subjects I have researched. Some stories are more "realistic," where landscape and geography—often West Virginia, or my native Pennsylvania—is an essential part of the narrative. Other stories are more experimental, blending realism with other styles like satire, metafiction, and historical fiction. Yet the narrators in these stories share a comtrait: they are somehow isolated, alienated, or marginalized. Some are physically confined—a lobsterman who works alone on his boat, coal miners working underground, office …

Warm Enough to Undress is a collection of six stories that trace pathways and barriers to intimacy in a modern, global world. The characters in these stories are saturated with proximity and access to others—through phone, web, and travel—yet they struggle to participate fully in their closest relationships. A woman discovers her childhood friend is gravely ill; a mother's visit to see her son is marked by deception; a secret affair begins to dissolve. These stories are about disappointments and triumphs in love, affinity, and desire.
