A Struggle For Recognition: The War Widows' Guild In Western Australia 1946-1975 ; And, Exegesis: Researching And Writing An Organisational History, Melinda Tognini

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis comprises an organisational history of the War Widow' Guild Australia WA Inc., and an essay about the research and writing process I undertook to construct such a history. The history outlines the development, struggles and achievements of the War Widows’ Guild in Western Australia from 1946 to 1975. While many were celebrating the end of the war in 1945, thousands of war widows faced an uncertain future without their husbands. Although Prime Minister John Curtin addressed the issue of war widows' pensions as part of his Post War Reconstruction initiatives, the pension was well below the basic wage. …

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

[First paragraph of Preface]

I set out to write an essay three years ago that started with the line “I always find God in the bathroom—don’t ask me why,” which is entirely true and says so much while explaining so little. Within a page and a half I briefly introduced a scene, a memory, where I had sequestered myself in a toilet stall in the bathroom on my sorority’s dorm floor at Eastern Kentucky University. I mentioned the scenario—I was hiding from a serial rapist who, for some reason, decided I’d be a good target—in just a few paragraphs and moved …

Barking At Death: Hemingway, Africa, And The Stages Of Dying, James Plath 2011 Illinois Wesleyan University

Barking At Death: Hemingway, Africa, And The Stages Of Dying, James Plath

Scholarship

From amazon.com: Considering the time Hemingway spent not only on the safaris but also in preparing for them beforehand and writing about them afterwards, Africa was a major factor in his life and work. But surprisingly little scholarship has been devoted to this aspect of Hemingway's oeuvre. This book fills that empty niche, opening the way for a long-delayed and multi-faceted conversation on a neglected aspect of Hemingway's work. Topics treated include historical, theoretical, biographical, theological, and literary interpretations of Hemingway's African topics and motifs.

Apple, Daydream, Memory, Rachael Peckham 2011 Marshall University

Apple, Daydream, Memory, Rachael Peckham

English Faculty Research

My older sister, Sarah, is the mother of an eighteen-month old girl, a precocious curly-haired toddler who shows less interest in carving a pumpkin than she does lying down in the grass beneath an apple tree. Claire was definitely showing signs of her Aunt Rachael this afternoon, Sarah debriefed in an email last week. She was in her own world. I remember my own worlds, my daydreams. They appeared on the way to school, to weekly piano lessons, church every Sunday. Always in the car, because we lived in southern Michigan, Amish country, landlocked by corn and …

A Collection Of Reportage, Lynn Marie Waltz

English Theses & Dissertations

This creative nonfiction thesis contains four stories written while I was a student in the Master of Fine Arts Program from June 2008 through December 2011. All four represent experimentation with form and are in progress. The theme of a common person faced with uncommon challenges runs through all the stories, which are based on numerous interviews, extensive research of National Labor Relations Board hearing transcripts and findings, civil and circuit court transcripts, government findings, and published ai1icles. Topics include labor fights at Smithfield Foods' Tar Heel slaughtering facility, military sexual trauma, wrongful criminal conviction, and victim misidentification.

A.L. Burruss: The Life Of A Georgia Politician And A Man To Trust, Margaret Walters

KSU Press Legacy Project

A. L. Burruss was an extraordinary, compassionate, self-effacing, and personable man. He was the eldest of eleven children and son of a painter and carpenter whose family moved to Smyrna, Georgia in the 1930s. After high school, the Navy trained him as a refrigeration machinist and the imaginative and hard-working Burruss used his skills to start a refrigeration business. Eventually Burruss bought out one of his clients-a partner with Tim Top Poultry in Marietta, Georgia-and helped the company to become immensely successful. Despite his prosperity, Burruss ran for political office as "a way to help others" and achieved political prominence …
