First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience

Death is something we all have or will deal with. However, as first-generation college students, many of us have loved ones in different countries, and even continents, who we can't get to in these difficult times. This piece explores my reaction to a personal experience in which I was not able to say goodbye to my grandmother because of my inability to travel out of the country due to certain circumstances.

A plastic fawn, palm-sized, lives on my office desk. He gazes at my open office door. His right front hoof is raised, poised for haste.

The deer of my Mississippi childhood were the Virginia whitetail, Odocoileus virginianus virginianus. As a child ten years or so, fresh from reading Felix Salten’s Bambi, I rested my forehead against backseat car windows and took in miles and miles of Mississippi forest. Since the Christian worldview is composed of more than theoretical truth, Christian literature should reflect these other aspects, such as how that truth is applied in the lives of the saints. Furthermore, the praxis element of worldview is reflected in literature more naturally in narrative genres than in more expository writings like systematic theology. Narrative genres mirror the complex, temporal way a person lives his life, and because of this are able to show how objective truth is applied in subjective situations.
