Milton's "Lycidas": Elevating The Human Condition, Haylee Edwards

John Milton’s 1637 poem “Lycidas” is a pastoral elegy told from the point of view of a shepherd grieving the loss of his friend, Lycidas. Written in honor of Milton’s late classmate, Edward King, “Lycidas” is a Christian allegory. This essay situates “Lycidas” within the history and characteristics of the pastoral elegy before analyzing how the poem at once inhabits and progressively deviates from the traditional form. Milton combines the traditional pastoral form with Elizabethan ideals and imagery to affirm his own religious, political, and existential views about death and the afterlife. This paper covers three datasets containing texts in Ancient Greek, manually aligned at word level against translations in English (Grc-Eng), Portuguese (Grc-Por) and Latin (Grc-Lat). The datasets were collected by two domain experts through annotation on the Ugarit Translation Alignment Editor (https://ugarit.ialigner.com/). The quality of each dataset was measured through Inter-Annotator-Agreement (IAA) above 80%. Each dataset contains the aligned pairs and an Annotation Style Guide, and serves as a Gold Standard for translation alignment of Ancient Greek, for the evaluation of automatic translation alignment models, and as high-quality training data. “Neither Orthodox Nor Enlightened:” Dorothy Sayers And Classical Education In America, Jessica Richardi

New England Classical Journal

In 1947, accomplished author and intellectual Dorothy Leigh Sayers shared her unorthodox views on education with an audience at Oxford University. The concerns she expressed about the failings of modern schooling and her proposed remedy would catalyze the “classical education” movement in the United States decades later, a movement characterized by adherence to the medieval trivium as both a tool of learning and a model for child development. The transmission of Sayers’s ideas to America, variations in the classical learning movement, and Sayers’ continued influence are discussed.

Malthi In Media: Peopling An Ancient Village In Virtual Space, Rebecca Worsham

New England Classical Journal

Digital applications have increased the possibilities for the visualization of archaeological material. This paper presents two reconstructions of the Bronze Age settlement Malthi, created using Minecraft and Twine, both readily accessible programs. These recreations draw on data from archaeological work at the site and are intended to depict alternative interpretations of the settlement, allowing for the uncertainty inherent in archaeology. They are likewise intended to invite interaction with the site beyond physically visiting, with the goal of increasing participation in the formation of knowledge about Malthi. The approach advocated here is applicable to other projects struggling with ambiguous data.

This essay examines the imaginative connection between c. 3.27 of Horace, one of the poet’s longest and most intense odes, and a salient episode in book 9 of Virgil’s Aeneid. In particular it searches out the multivalent appearances of the concept of pietas in the descriptions of Europe’s behavior toward her father and of Nisus and Euryalus. In their case we attend both to the association between the two innamorati themselves and to that between Euryalus and his mother. I take it for granted that the two Latin masters knew and valued the work of each other.

This research paper explores the relationship between culture and architecture in the Late Bronze Age through the analysis of the Minoan and Mycenaean communities, with the focus on the latter. This article explores the innovative language strategies employed by Senegalese writer Ken Bugul in her novel Aller et retour to construct a dynamic and interconnected linguistic landscape that challenges fixed language boundaries. Ken Bugul's "langue fabriquée" combines elements of French, Wolof, and English, reflecting a transglocal dimension that embodies the essence of afrophonics—a poetics of resistance that empowers local cultures in a globalized context. This article provides a summary overview of the collection of pre-1600 western European manuscripts in Loyola University Chicago Archives and Special Collections. The collection presently comprises four manuscript codices, at least 38 fragments, and four documents. The codices are a thirteenth-century Book of Hours from German-speaking lands; a fifteenth-century Dutch prayerbook; a preacher’s compilation written probably in southern Germany in the 1440s; and two fifteenth-century Italian humanist booklets, bound together since the nineteenth century, transmitting Donatus’s commentary on the Eunuchus (incomplete) and an anthology of theological excerpts, respectively. The purpose of this article is to reveal Charlotte Brontë’s canonized heterosexual character Jane Eyre as bisexual and explain why critics unintentionally erase bisexuality in historical literature. Homosexuality emerged as a species in the 1800s, but the heterosexual-versus-homosexual binary scale overlooked bisexuality. Yet, bisexuality existed—and Victorian society encouraged it between women. Lesbianism and female “friendships” were promoted within female boarding schools and between women in heterosexual marriages; the precise relationships exemplified in Jane Eyre. Though Jane marries a man, her heterosexual “familial” marriage emerges only out of her bisexual nature, for she does not marry Rochester until he becomes effeminate. …

Achilles Tatius has long puzzled his readers. This study demonstrates how careful attention to Leucippe and Clitophon’s narrative structure, generic discourse, and thematization of interpretation helps us to better understand not only this work but also the genre of the Greek novel. The first chapter shows how the opening frame of Leucippe and Clitophon “frames” the whole of Clitophon’s embedded narration, by rehearsing the novel’s narrative structure and characterizing Achilles Tatius’ strategies for engaging with his literary predecessors. This is a Greek-to-English translation of one section or chapter of a larger ancient Greek work called the Mathematical Collectionby Pappus of Alexandria (ca. 290 - 350 CE). Specifically, this is “Book VIII”' of that work. To date and to the translator’s knowledge, no complete English translation of Book VIII has been published.

Pappus was very influential as a bridge between the knowledge that had been preserved from ancient mathematics and European mathematicians in the Renaissance. This specific part of Pappus' work deals with applications of geometry to questions in mechanics.
