Dr. Malloy kicked off the UTOPIA500 project with a presentation on Jan. 21, 2016. His paper, Utopia and the Law and Literature Movement, marked the quincentennial of the publication of Thomas More's novel Utopia in 1516. Dr. Malloy explored the meaning and implications of the concepts of utopia and dystopia. He argued, with colorful graphic support, that More's novel was a precursor to post-modernist literature, and that in our own time there has been a linguistic transformation of the concept of utopia to contemporary meanings that are often entirely independent of More's novel. We are investigating methods by which data from dependency syntax treebanks of ancient Greek can be applied to questions of authorship in ancient Greek historiography. From the Ancient Greek Dependency Treebank were constructed syntax words (sWords) by tracing the shortest path from each leaf node to the root for each sentence tree. This paper presents the results of a preliminary test of the usefulness of the sWord as a stylometric discriminator. The sWord data was subjected to clustering analysis. The resultant groupings were in accord with traditional classifications. The use of sWords also allows a more fine-grained heuristic exploration of …

In the early years following the discovery the manuscripts in the eleven caves in the vicinity of Khirbet Qumran many scholars casually used the term “library” when referring to the Qumran Scrolls. F.M. Cross, for example, entitled his 1958 survey The Ancient Library of Qumran and Modern Biblical Studies, while J.T. Milik named chapter two of his Ten Years of Discovery in the Wilderness of Judaea “The Qumrân Library.”1 More recently authors have shied away from the word “library,” preferring the more neutral terms “corpus,” “collection,” or simply “scrolls.”2 However, the question of whether or not the corpus of …

The Papers of Procope S. Costas consists primarily of Dr. Costas’s writings, mainly the dictionary that he had prepared (although never fully finished) entitled English Words Derived from the Greek. In addition to the six boxes that contain bound and unbound drafts of the dictionary Dr. Costas was working on, this collection is comprised of correspondence, personal information, miscellaneous items such as invoices and brochures, several citations, photographs of family and friends, as well as oversized materials including two LP’s (with manuals that Dr. Costas wrote).

The poem from the Bodmer Papyrus (PBodmer 30) To Abraham contains a number of perplexing phrases and images—one in particular is the ambiguous word μῆλον, which appears in no other known text on the Sacrifice of Isaac. In this poem Abraham, in place of his son Isaac, chooses the μῆλον. I contribute to our understanding of how the poem works by demonstrating what μῆλον signifies in this context. I argue that the poem deliberately uses the ambiguous word μῆλον precisely because it can mean both sheep and apple. Twelve seasons of work at Hippos of the Decapolis have exposed a 50 x 65 meter quadrant north of the Decumanus Maximus containing structures from the three main phases of the occupation of Hippos: the House of Tyche--a Roman peristyle house with a garden; the Northeast Church--a small memorial chapel for a revered woman; and an Umayyad meeting hall. The quadrant also demonstrates the decline and intentional abandonment of this part of the city prior to the great earthquake of the mid eighth century CE.

Alexander III of Macedon has often been regarded as the prodigal student of Aristotle, acting on and bringing into fruition his tutor’s ideas of what it is to be a good ruler. While this was fulfilled in part with regards to Alexander’s battlefield prowess and his embodying a god-like status as ruler, there are many other ways in which he falls short of Aristotle’s ideal philosopher king. Such examples include disregarding the advice of his men and being guided more by passion than by reason. In this paper, I will assess evidence for both of these positions with regards to …
