Total Joint Implant Alloy Oxide Layer Cell-Induced Damage, Chandler K. Sears 2022 University of Tennessee Health Science Center

Total Joint Implant Alloy Oxide Layer Cell-Induced Damage, Chandler K. Sears

Longitudinal Scholar's Project

Cobalt-Chromium alloy is commonly used in total joint arthroplasty (TJA). Several studies have investigated evidence of inflammatory-cell-induced-corrosion (ICIC) causing pitting in TJA retrieved implants. Others have determined that placing orthopedic alloys into lower pH solutions will increase the rate of corrosion. We have determined that electrochemical potential and corrosion rates of human knee synovial fluid show a variation greater than an order of magnitude. This means there is going to be a significant variation between a patient’s local environment of the TJA implant and may affect how macrophages interact with alloy oxide layers. Knee disability can be quantified by using …

Lgbtq+ Microaggressions In Clinical Skills Training., Andrew Givens, Gita Jaikumar, Hayden Norris, Jacqueline Tran, Elisha Vanzant, Bhawana Yadav, Emily Noonan, Linda Fuselier, Laura Weingartner

Undergraduate Research Events

BACKGROUND

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people experience health disparities. Implicit bias and mistreatment by healthcare providers can also lead LGTBQ+ people to delay care or avoid it entirely. Clinical skills training in the care of LGBTQ+ patients is therefore critical to health equity. Standardized patient (SP) encounters allow medical students to be assessed as providers in a mock clinical setting.

METHODS

The study population was rising third-year medical students at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 2022. Out of 149 total encounters, coders reviewed all encounters with gender diverse SPs (n=86) and coded microaggressions, which …

Effects Of Dietary Ω-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (N-3 Pufa) In Light Sensitivity Of Retinas Of Mice Models To Prevent Retinal Damage, Aaron Eugene Rice 2022 University of Tennessee Health Science Center

Effects Of Dietary Ω-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (N-3 Pufa) In Light Sensitivity Of Retinas Of Mice Models To Prevent Retinal Damage, Aaron Eugene Rice

Longitudinal Scholar's Project

Light-induced retinal degeneration (LIRD) causes photoreceptor cell death in albino mice after exposure to high intensity light for a set period of time (6-24 hours). This causes retinal photoreceptor cell death through apoptosis. From several previous studies, Dr. Mandal’s lab concluded that de novo biosynthesis of ceramide mediates photoreceptor cell death in a LIRD model. Previous studies in Dr. Mandal’s lab has shown that mouse models with higher endogenous ω-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (n-3 PUFA) generates less ceramide upon neuronal injury and prevent neurodegeneration (Mol Neurobio 2021). There are currently not many available effective therapies for retinal degeneration in humans …

Provider Attitude Towards Postpartum Sexual Health, Katie Shearer, Pallavi Khanna 2022 University of Tennessee Health Science Center

Provider Attitude Towards Postpartum Sexual Health, Katie Shearer, Pallavi Khanna

Longitudinal Scholar's Project

Background: The prevalence of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) worldwide is estimated to be 41%. FSD is even more prevalent in postpartum patients. There are significant barriers to addressing FSD in a busy clinic, and the use of a standardized screening questionnaire could be used to improve outcomes during postpartum appointments.

Methodology: Providers that care for postpartum patients at Regional One Health in Memphis, TN, were asked to complete an anonymous survey online. General knowledge and practices of providers were assessed.

Results: 79% of respondents answered that they felt very comfortable assessing for postpartum sexual health, and 88% …

Comparison Of Routine Health Screening Rates Between Two Emr Systems, Lauren M. Cancio, Caleb J. Berta 2022 University of Tennessee Health Science Center

Comparison Of Routine Health Screening Rates Between Two Emr Systems, Lauren M. Cancio, Caleb J. Berta

Longitudinal Scholar's Project

An EMR, electronic medical record, system refers to the software widely adopted by medical practitioners to reduce the use of hard-copy files, and improve the documentation, storage, and retrieval of patient information. Some EMR systems can generate automatic alerts reminding providers when patients are due for certain preventive services or meet the criteria for various screening measures. Epic, one of the leading EMR systems in use today, contains this additional feature. The screening recommendations built into Epic are derived from a committee of USPSTF, U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, medical experts whose focus is to improve patient health across the …

Improving Postpartum Depression Literacy: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Ashton Neal

Nursing (graduate) Student Scholarship

Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) is associated with increased healthcare costs, decreased levels of productivity, and negative patient outcomes, collectively affecting babies, women, and society. Women are at an increased risk for mortality and morbidity if postpartum depression is left untreated. Postpartum depression literacy improves patient outcomes.

Problem: Women may fail to effectively recognize the signs and symptoms of postpartum depression, due to inadequate postpartum education and lower health literacy levels.

Methods: A formalized postpartum depression education program was implemented online to mothers attending a postpartum adjustment support group in the spring of 2022 and compared to usual …

Multicomponent Approach To Delirium Prevention In The Acute Care Setting: An Evidence-Based Quality Improvement Project., Kelley James

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

Background: Acutely ill, hospitalized individuals are at an increased likelihood of developing delirium. Between 30-35% of those patients admitted to the hospital will develop delirium, and as a result, these individuals will face an increased risk of mortality, adverse medical events, restraint usage, and incur a more extended hospitalization. The literature supports early screening utilizing the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) tool and nurse-driven, multicomponent interventions to aid in preventing its development.

Environment: This project was implemented in a long-term, acute care facility specializing in patients requiring long-term mechanical ventilation, advanced wound care, pulmonary and respiratory care, and the rehabilitation of …
