Successfully Transitioning Executives During Times Of Multidimensional Change: A Delphi Study Examining Organizational Practices In Large Hospital Systems, Lilicia Bailey
Theses and Dissertations
Healthcare is the fastest growing industry in the United States and globally. Economists forecast that as the population grows and life expectancy increases, the healthcare sector will continue expanding to meet consumer needs domestically and globally. Population aging and the emergence of global pandemics has substantially increased the demand for healthcare services and has created volatile, complex, uncertain, and ambiguous conditions that ignite social, economic, and workforce shifts within and outside the organization. While these factors require growth and agility within healthcare organizations, high turnover in the healthcare workforce threatens these organizations’ ability to effectively fulfill their mission. The high …

Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses
This study contributes to a body of scholarship that demonstrates the benefits and need of employee-driven and defined wellness at work processes. This participatory action research study brought together a team of employees within a remote-work, start-up organization to define and design a process for implementing wellness at work for their organization. Through a participatory process that allowed outcomes to emerge from the group, employees identified opportunities to foster embodied wellness in their organization in three core areas: organizational, personal, and cross-boundary initiatives. Through a reflective collaboration, employees generated ideas and developed a plan to address employee-identified priorities that will …

Factors Associated With Patient Portal Utilization, Preventive Services Utilization, And Health Promoting Behaviors Among Adults In The United States, Elizabeth Ayangunna
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: Nearly 60% of adults in the United States are estimated to have one or more chronic conditions, necessitating strategies to improve the health status of persons with chronic disease. Given that health information technology (HIT) is considered highly valuable for superior disease management, it is imperative to examine how HIT use can improve health behaviors, which can in turn improve health status. This study aimed to examine if there was an association between patient portal utilization and the use of preventive services & health-promoting behaviors. Also, this study examined the influence of self-efficacy on preventive health behaviors among adults …
What Does It Look Like For Mental Healthcare Organizations To Be Healthy Places To Work? An Action Research Study, 2023 Antioch University - PhD Program in Leadership and Change
What Does It Look Like For Mental Healthcare Organizations To Be Healthy Places To Work? An Action Research Study, Stephanie L. Fox
Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses
Mental healthcare organizations have a reputation for being unhealthy places to work. The irony of this reputation is keenly felt by its workforce who report unsustainable workloads, high levels of stress, and lack of support or engagement from higher-level leadership. As a mental healthcare provider now in a position of leadership, who has worked across all levels of care within the sector, it was of interest to me to explore how a mental health organization can become a healthier and more sustainable place to work. I approached this study with the assumption that if an organization was healthy and intentional …

Implementation Of A Probiotic Intervention Among Medical-Surgical Patients: An Evidence-Based Practice Quality Improvement Project, Moncia Bonvicini
DNP Projects
Introduction: Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is the most prevalent nosocomial infection pathogen responsible for antibiotic associated diarrhea. CDI is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality rates of medical patients and has increased due to frequent broad spectrum antibiotic usage. CDI is associated with a mortality rate of 25% amongst medical patients. At this catholic hospital in the Northeast of the United States, there is currently no official intervention implemented to prescribe a probiotic when patients are started on antibiotics. Evidence supports that probiotics agents have demonstrated modest success in the risk reduction of CDI to patients receiving antibiotic therapy. …

Graduate Publications and Other Selected Works - Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
Abstract
Opioid pain medications are currently viewed as a standard part of pain control in the vast majority of surgical procedures. However, opioid pain medications can have harmful effects on patients leading to increased length of hospital stay, unplanned readmission, and contribution to relapse or development of opioid use disorder. An opportunity for improved practice of pain management lies within opioid alternative pain medications such as dexmedetomidine. Evidence-based literature reviews have shown that dexmedetomidine has promise as an analgesic medication within the perioperative period with fewer harmful side effects. Barriers to more widespread use of this medication include staff unfamiliarity …

Improving Glycemic Control During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Quality Improvement Project, Megan Henderson
Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Projects, 2020-current
Diabetes is a costly, chronic health condition. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the delivery of health care and exacerbated chronic health conditions, such as diabetes. Diabetes is one of the most significant comorbid conditions associated with poor COVID-19 outcomes (Cariou et al., 2020). Control of blood glucose levels during the COVID-19 pandemic has proved challenging to maintain. The purpose of this quality improvement project is to identify gaps in diabetic self-care and then implement a diabetic toolkit to improve self-efficacy of diabetes self-management. According to the American Diabetes Association (2022), self-management of diabetes, education, and support from providers is …
Improving Access For Medicare Inpatient Psychiatric Patients: A Health Policy Analysis, 2022 James Madison University
Improving Access For Medicare Inpatient Psychiatric Patients: A Health Policy Analysis, Malinda B. Whitfield
Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Projects, 2020-current
The Medicare Inpatient Psychiatric Services (IPS) policy, originally developed in the 1960s and without any significant or meaningful updates since the 1980’s, is physician specific, does not reflect the current model of care for psychiatric inpatients, and is restrictive for psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) practice. The policy is complex, consists of outdated regulations, and results in millions of dollars in compliance costs for Inpatient Psychiatric Facilities (IPFs) annually (NABH, 2019). Although clearly an important part of the inpatient psychiatric services team, PMHNPs are not identified or defined in the policy (Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services [CMS], 2019). …
Educating School Nurses To Improve Bowel Continence In Children With Spina Bifida, 2022 University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Educating School Nurses To Improve Bowel Continence In Children With Spina Bifida, Mckinley J. Waugh, Tracy L. Brewer, Lisa Wagoner
Graduate Publications and Other Selected Works - Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
Children born with spina bifida, a neural tube defect, can have associated loss of bowel control resulting in bowel incontinence. The National Patient Spina Bifida Registry found that 87% of those living with spina bifida had bowel incontinence, and less than 30% were bowel continent (Sawin et al., 2015; Wiener et al., 2017). Unfortunately, providers may never start a child living with spina bifida on a bowel management program. Evidence suggests that children with spina bifida should begin a bowel management program early, using a stepwise approach. School nurses, who interact with children living with spinal bifida while attending school, …
