With Love, ; An Interdisciplinary And Intersectional Look At Why Creativity Is Essential, Theo Starr Gardner
Whittier Scholars Program
My Whittier Scholars Program self-designed major, Teaching Creativity, is a mixture of Art, Literature, and Education classes. My research and praxis classes have been focused on the ‘how?’s and 'why?’s of creativity, so it felt only right that my project should be a constructivist, generative project. With Love, was conceptually inspired by the research I’ve conducted on creativity and creative arts education over the past few …

Between Magic And Realism: The Ashes Of The Forest, Guzide Erturk Guzeldere
Student Research Symposium

The narrative centers around the mysterious events in the seemingly ordinary Mossy Village along the shores of the Aegean Sea, the tensions between the characters, and their inner reckonings. When the sea withdraws far away, the main character, Azra, a young …

Laughing In The Wrong Places: Daniel Clowes And The Danger Of Nostalgia, Liam Cassidy
MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture
This essay explores the relationship between art objects and our past, narrowing in on nostalgia as a malevolent force in American culture that will lead to its eventual downfall. Focusing on Daniel Clowes’ latest graphic novel Monica as a case study, I demonstrate how graphic stories like this seek to reflect rather than interpret, and are often more closely aligned to the creator’s biography than an attempt at broad strokes or political pandering. The essay uses interviews with Clowes at various points of his career, reviews of Monica, academic essays on Clowes, as well as articles and books dissecting …
