This report summarizes the findings of an in-depth study of the manufacturing sector in the Greater Northeastern/Northern region of Pennsylvania. The objective of the first section is to draw attention to the role manufacturing plays in the regional economy. It compares manufacturing to other sectors of the economy in terms of employment, gross regional product, wages, productivity, and number of establishments (See Table E-1). It also briefly describes trends in the value of shipments of manufacturing goods as a proxy for exports, manufacturers’ investments in capital expenditures as a measure of capital intensity and adoption of technology, and patenting activity …

This brief continues a series of publications that tell the story of manufacturing in Northeast Ohio (NEO) and provide an overview of the trends in employment, gross regional product, average wages, establishments, and exports for major manufacturing industries. This year’s focus will be on short term trends (2010 to 2012) that describe the growth of the manufacturing sector, with a detailed analysis for specific industries that constitute the sector. Northeast Ohio’s trends are then compared to trends in the United States and the remainder of the state of Ohio.

The Center for Economic Development (the Center) at the Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University prepared this report for LAND studio. The objective of this report is to present an economic impact of the green infrastructure maintenance of the future green infrastructure investments that the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) will undertake. LAND studio will use this study as a component to a broader study of best practices in green infrastructure maintenance, the needs of the sector, and to develop a foundation for the creation of a green infrastructure maintenance education and workforce training program.

The Ohio New Establishment Dynamics (O-NED) data set tracks the number of establishments that first started employing people between the second quarter of 1997 and the first quarter of 2008 and measures the employment and payroll data for these new establishments. O-NED enables researchers to measure the growth trends of cohorts of new establishments for up to 5 years after the cohort’s birth. These data are the first publicly available data that document the growth rates of new establishments at the substate level. The finest unit of geography O-NED measures is a county. Ohio faces significant challenges to its manufacturing in a global economy. Energy intensive manufacturing, in particular, is threatened by rising electricity costs and a need to reduce carbon emissions. Electricity costs are projected to increase substantially in the coming years, especially in grid constrained areas such as that found in Northern Ohio. One answer to this threat is the adoption of distributed generation, especially in the form of combined heat and power, or CHP. Distributed generation is power generated in small amounts at or near the site of consumption, thereby reducing line losses and increasing the strategic value of that …

This study describes the impact of GRC on the State of Ohio and on Northeast Ohio, where GRC is located. Northeast Ohio includes the eight counties in the Akron and Cleveland metropolitan areas.1 This report is an expansion and update of an earlier study, published in February 1996.2 As before, this study employs two methods to determine GRC’s influence on the state and local economies. What Works in Economic Development reviews evaluation literature relevant to economic development strategies. While economic development programs are difficult to evaluate, the literature reveals important information about the level of success achieved by various programs. It also demonstrates how positive results can be realized. A “what works” matrix follows the review of the evaluation studies. The matrix highlights the significant findings and key lessons that can be learned from this work.

This report describes the findings from the third study of Dashboard indicators using the framework that was developed in the previous two studies. The framework resulted in a set of indicators that explains the dynamics of regional economic growth for large and mid-sized metropolitan areas in the United States. The objective of this study is to continue monitoring the performance of Northeast Ohio metropolitan areas over time and in comparison to other metropolitan areas across the United States.

This report examines the four central cities in Northeast Ohio – Akron, Canton, Cleveland, and Youngstown — in the context of their metropolitan areas. A central city is the largest or most important city of a metropolitan area. A metropolitan area combines a large city with adjacent urbanized areas and peripheral areas that are closely bound to the center with strong ties to commuting, commerce, and a common labor market.

This report was prepared for Ohio’s IT Alliance, a statewide network of six regional IT groups located throughout Ohio and headquartered in Dayton. The study was conducted by the Ohio Economic Development Information Network, better known as the ES202 Network. The ES202 Network is a statewide group of ten urban and rural universities that develops and maintains a database of employment, payroll, and establishments at the zip code level throughout Ohio. ES202 Network researchers are engaged in industry and labor force research that utilizes this unique database.
