"Keep It Rural": The Politics Of Planning For Smart Growth In South Fulton County, Georgia, Eric John Christianson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The politics and practice of planning exurban areas in the United States has been a major focus of debate since the 1950s. Urban growth management and more recently smart growth have arisen in response to the sprawling forms of development that are characteristic of most North American cities. While these movements represent the development of a broad set of tools for directing growth and preserving agriculturally and biologically important land, political and institutional barriers to their implementation remain strong. A more robust understanding of the political environment in which plans with strong growth management are enacted and implemented is necessary ...

Empowerment In The Context Of Climate Change: How Community-Based Organizations Can Play A Role In Engaging Citizens, Annie Thompson Heuscher Jan 2012

Empowerment In The Context Of Climate Change: How Community-Based Organizations Can Play A Role In Engaging Citizens, Annie Thompson Heuscher

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Climate change has been noted by many as "perhaps the most profound challenge ever to have confronted human social, political, and economic systems" (Dryzek, Norgaard, and Schlosberg 2011, 3). Humans around the world though, have failed to develop an effective response. Significant research in the past has explored the reasons why people choose not to take action on climate change; this research seeks to understand the motivations and experiences of those who do choose to take action on climate change. Through a case study methodology, this research uses in-depth interviews with participants of a Transition Initiative in southern Appalachia to ...

Weather Factors Influencing Winter Roosts Of American Crows In Central Iowa, Joshua D. Obrecht, Stephen J. Dinsmore Jan 2008

Weather Factors Influencing Winter Roosts Of American Crows In Central Iowa, Joshua D. Obrecht, Stephen J. Dinsmore

Natural Resource Ecology and Management Publications

We investigated the effects of season and weather on the winter roosting behavior of American Crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) in central Iowa from January through March 2006. The peak number of birds recorded at a roost in Ames, Story County was 9,000+ in early February, and the number of individuals entering the roost decreased through February and March. Crows tended to enter the roost later in the day as winter neared completion. High wind speed and low light intensity caused individuals to enter the roost earlier in the day. Temperature did not affect arrival time of crows. Wind speed, light ...

An Examination Of Contributing Factors To Land Use/Land Cover Change In Southern Belize And The Use Of Satellite Image Analysis To Track Changes, Marissa Lenée Moore Jan 2007

An Examination Of Contributing Factors To Land Use/Land Cover Change In Southern Belize And The Use Of Satellite Image Analysis To Track Changes, Marissa Lenée Moore

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Land use and land cover change analyses are important tools for planning and development decisions. Tropical deforestation has both local and global implications. One main reason for deforestation is the conversion of forest to agricultural land. This study explores influences and potential causes for agricultural expansion and deforestation within the Toledo District in southern Belize, Central America. Many factors play into the deforestation and degradation of tropical forests in this district, including social, cultural, political and economic issues, all of which need serious consideration if planners and politicians are to combat the problem. Understanding the reasons for deforestation goes hand ...

Gis Modeling Of Urbanization Impacts On Natural Resources, Dakota County, Minnesota, Lan Wei Jan 2007

Gis Modeling Of Urbanization Impacts On Natural Resources, Dakota County, Minnesota, Lan Wei

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This research focused on the impacts of urbanization in natural resources and land-cover changes due to urban development in Dakota County, Minnesota. An existing planning guide, the 2030 Regional Development Framework (2030 RDF) for the Twin Cities Metro Area, was analyzed and employed as a reference in this research. Geographic information systems (GIS) technology was used to help determine characteristics of urban land-cover changes, such as population change, land cover changes, and the environmental impacts on natural resources caused by urban development. Furthermore, land suitability modeling was utilized to analyze possible future development, from the perspectives of urban expansion and ...

Emerging Bridges Over Contested Waters: Coalitions, Participatory Process, Social Capital And Community Capacity For Water Quality Protection , Stephen Philip Gasteyer Jan 2001

Emerging Bridges Over Contested Waters: Coalitions, Participatory Process, Social Capital And Community Capacity For Water Quality Protection , Stephen Philip Gasteyer

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Over the decade of the 1990s, there has been increasing attention to the factors that contribute to community organization for the protection of water quality. While much is theorized about the importance of education, leadership, and biophysical factors in this organization, few have laid out concrete models about the causal factors in creating community capacity for water quality protection. Building on research on social indicators, including indicators of community process, this research aims to demonstrate a clear relationship between attention to the social mobilization process and creation of community capacity to respond to water quality challenges. I use multivariate analysis ...
