The Center for Nonprofit Policy & Practice (CNP&P) was formally engaged by board leaders of the Dunham Tavern Museum in 2014 to assist the organization with forming and performing the work to strengthen board governance. Gradually, a project work plan was created to conduct “small p” planning (not traditional strategic planning) to advance the interests of the organization.

• The mutually agreed upon work products facilitated by the CNP&P include the following elements:
• Board development, training, and priorities planning of strategic issues;

A region's workforce has been described as its greatest asset. Guided by human capital theory and new growth theory, regions have pursued economic development policies to increase the number of college-educated workers and expand the pool of STEM -- science, technology, engineering, and math -- talent. Academic literature and policy interventions have focused on a region's human capital in terms of educational attainment instead of a more fine-grained definition of human capital based on skills and competencies. This dissertation integrates economic and business theory and combines three federal databases to explore regional human capital assets. Findings suggest that policymakers may …

Neighbors Building Community - A Community Empowerment Initiative Through Community Mapping, Mark J. Salling

Cleveland State University’s Office of Civic Engagement, through an Engaged Learning Enhancement Grant, funded a pilot demonstration project to evaluate the use of community mapping for assisting with community assessments of neighborhood issues in a west side neighborhood of Cleveland. The project used neighborhood residents to collect and map data on a variety of neighborhood issues, specifically dilapidated buildings, potentially dangerous dogs, pot holes, broken sidewalks, offensive graffiti, trash in vacant lots, dead trees, and more.

The Levin College of Urban Affairs has been the evaluation partner for the Cuyahoga County Foreclosure Prevention Program (CCFPP) since the program was adopted in 2006. This report is an update to the County for 2014. The evaluation provides metrics to track progress and provides feedback about the program that can be used to improve and adapt it to meet the rapidly changing state and national context surrounding foreclosures.

Since consistent tracking began in 2009, the Cuyahoga County foreclosure prevention program has served a total of 23,002 homeowners at the five participating counseling agencies. In 2014 alone, 2,751 households were …

Not having a reason to be is the human crisis. Developing worth is the cure. Such is the case not just for people, but for cities. Cities without uses become ghost towns, with a midway existence called “the shrinking city”. Cleveland, like many Rust Belt cities, is a so-called shrinking city. For decades now the region has fought against the anticipation of disappearing. This fight is called “economic development”.

In the sunset of the 1990s and beginning of the Millennium, historic designation of properties has become an important tool increasingly used to preserve cultural heritage, revive central-city neighborhoods, and stimulate community economic development. Ohio has not, heretofore, been a major player in the deployment of stationary fuel cell applications, notwithstanding its status as a leader in developing fuel cell technology. One reason for this is that in the years since fuel cells became commercially available, fuel cell power generation had struggled to be cost effective in Ohio due to a combination low electricity prices and high natural gas prices, the latter being the most common fuel for stationary fuel cell applications.

This report presents an analysis of the economic impact of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s John H. Glenn Research Center (NASA Glenn) during its FY 2014. It uses an input-output model, which reflects the buy-sell relationships among industries, the household sector, and the government sector in a region, to estimate the effect of NASA Glenn’s spending on the economies of both Northeast Ohio and the state of Ohio. This model assesses economic impact in terms of growth in total output (sales); value added (output less intermediary goods); household earnings, number of new jobs, and taxes.

Slavic Village is a revitalizing urban neighborhood in the southeast area of the City of Cleveland. A historic neighborhood that was once home to 75,000 immigrants of Polish and Slavic descent, it has seen steady decline since the 1960’s, along with other Cleveland neighborhoods, and was especially hard hit during the housing and foreclosure crisis of 2007-2010. However, in the present day, it has many assets and opportunities that make it poised to become one of the vibrant Cleveland neighborhoods of the future.

A small town of 2700 residents in rural eastern Geauga County, the Village of Middlefield has nonetheless taken an aggressive approach to attracting business, resulting in sizable local employment that is disproportionate to its small population. As of 2012, 5900 people were employed in the Village and its immediate vicinity, with the potential for an additional 2000 in non-employment and family-based businesses. Businesses have been particularly attracted by the stable, skilled workforce, the small town lifestyle, and the Village’s support for business retention and expansion.

Filming in Ohio has increased since the adoption of the Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit. After the blockbusters Spiderman 3 and The Avengers were filmed in the Cleveland metropolitan area, the city saw another comic book hero come to town when it doubled as Washington, D.C. for Captain America: Winter Soldier. Cleveland’s reputation as a sports town came to the forefront in the film Draft Day, highlighting the Cleveland Browns football franchise which, but for the Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit, would have been about the Buffalo Bills. These large-scale movies bring an influx of outside money to the state.
