Measuring The Impact Of Light Rail Systems On Single Family Home Values: A Hedonic Approach With Gis Application, Hong Chen, Anthony M. Rufolo, Kenneth Dueker Jul 1997

Measuring The Impact Of Light Rail Systems On Single Family Home Values: A Hedonic Approach With Gis Application, Hong Chen, Anthony M. Rufolo, Kenneth Dueker

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

In theory, proximity to a light rail (LRT) may have two different effects on residential property values. On the one hand, accessibility (proximity to the LRT stations) may increase property values. On the other hand, nuisance effects (proximity to the LRT line and stations) may decrease property values. Existing empirical studies are inconclusive, and failure to separate the effects of accessibility from the nuisance effects may explain some of the ambiguity. This paper examines the impact of the light-rail system (MAX) in Portland, Oregon, on single-family home values using distance to rail stations as a proxy for accessibility and distance …

Hedonic Analysis Of Psu Faculty Salaries, Tim O'Brien, Matt Ransom, Ellery Reed, Tim Schindler, Kay Woodford, James G. Strathman Jul 1997

Hedonic Analysis Of Psu Faculty Salaries, Tim O'Brien, Matt Ransom, Ellery Reed, Tim Schindler, Kay Woodford, James G. Strathman

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

The complex issue of faculty compensation has vital importance within the academic labor market. Salaries reflect institutional, interpersonal, organizational and labor market forces. Designing productive and equitable faculty salary structures is one of the most contentious challenges that American higher education institutions face (Bowen, 1986).

Increasingly, salary scales have been more responsive to market conditions, which has widened the salary disparities among academic disciplines within the university labor market. Upward pressure on the salary scales in some disciplines has been countered by a downward pull in others (Scott and Bereman, 1992). As a consequence, analyzing academic salary structure can generate …

Baseball And Basketball Stadium Ownership And Franchise Incentives To Relocate, Gerard C. Mildner, James G. Strathman Jul 1997

Baseball And Basketball Stadium Ownership And Franchise Incentives To Relocate, Gerard C. Mildner, James G. Strathman

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

In an earlier paper, we examined the factors leading Major League Baseball franchises to relocate using data from 1950 to 1995 (Mildner and Strathman, 1996). In this paper, we extend our analysis to look at the National Basketball Association from 1960 to 1995. Our intent is to extend this line of research to cover the other major league sports, but we present here the data for these two sports along with some location data for professional hockey and football. The paper proceeds as follows: a model of the team relocation decision process, a description of our data set, our analysis …

Exploring And Visualizing The Census Transportation Planning Package (Ctpp) Urban And Statewide Elements, Thomas J. Kimpel, Kenneth Dueker, Philip J. Wuest, David R. Brooks

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

The purpose of this report is to document the types of transportation analyses that can be undertaken with the Census Transportation Planning Package (CTPP). In particular, this report focuses on exploring and visualizing the various elements of the CTPP data set. It is structured as a series of small-scale studies that have incorporated the use of CTPP data in order to generate information on a number of transportation-related topics. A general overview of each study is given, along with a description of the CTPP data used in the analysis, and a brief interpretation of the results. It is hoped that …

"I like Providence, but it was not always so. As a youngster, growing up between Boston and Providence, my friends and I very seldom ventured south into that city of corruption, clutter and crime; after all this was where the Mob was centered. Rightly or wrongly, that was the image that was conveyed."

Assessing The Future Of The New England Mill Town: What Are The Key Factors That Lead To Successful Revitalization?, John Mullin, Zenia Kotval Apr 1997

Assessing The Future Of The New England Mill Town: What Are The Key Factors That Lead To Successful Revitalization?, John Mullin, Zenia Kotval

Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Faculty Publication Series

Over the past twenty years, we have been involved in economic revitalization projects in more than 50 mill towns across the state of Massachusetts. We begin these projects with a quiet visit to each community.

Moving off a state or interstate road, we meander down through a highly dense village of multiunit tenements. Built close to the road, they are always a decided mix of well-kept and decaying structures. They are rarely one or the other entirely. It is as if the residents and owners are undecided about reinvestment or commitment to the community.

Feedback Control Solutions To Network Level User-Equilibrium Real-Time Dynamic Traffic Assignment Problems, Pushkin Kachroo, Kaan Ozbay

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

A new method for performing dynamic traffic assignment (DTA) is presented which is applicable in real time, since the solution is based on feedback control. This method employs the design of nonlinear H∞ feedback control systems which is robust to certain class of uncertainties in the system. The solution aims at achieving user equilibrium on alternate routes in a network setting.

Population Estimates For Oregon: July 1, 1996, Howard Wineberg, Population Research Center, Portland State University

Oregon Population Estimates and Reports

This report provides population estimates for Oregon, its counties, and cities for the years 1980 through 1996. As mandated by Oregon law (ORS 190.510 to 190.610), the Center for Population Research and Census at Portland State University, acting on behalf of the State Board of Higher Education, annually estimates the July 1 population for each county and incorporated city in Oregon. These population estimates are used in the allocation of certain state tax revenues to cities and counties.

Population figures presented in this report represent all the people who usually reside in the area designated. This includes people living in …

Rebuilding The Dream: Strategies For Lihnapo's Future, Marie Anderson, Joddie Gray, Ramona Ruark, Tracy Strickland, Mark Walhood Mar 1997

Rebuilding The Dream: Strategies For Lihnapo's Future, Marie Anderson, Joddie Gray, Ramona Ruark, Tracy Strickland, Mark Walhood

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

Community development is difficult, yet rewarding work. Success is dependent on focused activities, organizational capacity, availability of funding and technical assistance, leadership capability and community support. Low Income Housing for Native Americans of Portland, Oregon (LIHNAPO) was created in 1993 in response to the urgent need for affordable housing for Native Americans in Portland. LIHNAPO is young, working to establish itself as a viable organization. To make this transition, LIHNAPO must carry out a strategic planning process. As a step in that direction, Organizing Resources for Community Action (ORCA) has created this document to help LIHNAPO identify the course for …
