Best Practices Of Creating Innovation Exchange Web Portals Across The States, Iryna Lendel, Simon Husted, Luke Seaberg, Serena Alexander

Since their initial development in the late 1990s, expert web portals have been an evolving tool for universities, systems of higher education, and economic development organizations. The web portals are searchable, web-based databases of university scholars and researchers that feature, at a minimum, information on their expertise, innovation products and publications. Many of the portals are growing to include information on universities’ physical assets and equipment, regional strengths, and additional services such as networking and analytical tools for research.

In 2015, the partners of the Greater University Circle Economic Inclusion Initiative reached an important milestone—5 years of working together to revitalize the seven neighborhoods that comprise Greater University Circle (GUC). Filming in Ohio has increased since the adoption of the Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit. After the blockbusters Spiderman 3 and The Avengers were filmed in the Cleveland metropolitan area, the city saw another comic book hero come to town when it doubled as Washington, D.C. for Captain America: Winter Soldier. Cleveland’s reputation as a sports town came to the forefront in the film Draft Day, highlighting the Cleveland Browns football franchise which, but for the Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit, would have been about the Buffalo Bills. These large-scale movies bring an influx of outside money to the state.

Many cities throughout the United States have created educational “promise” campaigns. Cities such as Kalamazoo and Pittsburgh have offered students money to attend college if they were enrolled in an urban public school and met other specific curriculum goals. These policies were created based on economic development research that cities and regions benefit from having population with education beyond high school. Studies have shown that the more educated a city’s population is, the more rapidly the city will experience growth.
