Many governments around the world are committed to the idea of creating high-tech industries in their territories. Often they do so by imitating other well-recognized models such as the Silicon Valley. This dissertation investigated three countries economic development plans to understand how government policies could support or hinder the establishment of an Innovation Systems in developing countries. Though most commonly regarded as a revolutionary public health invention, the introduction of conventional wastewater sanitation systems has a mixed legacy in the U.S. A growing body of research links sewage-based sanitation systems with nationwide ecosystem degradation and an unsustainable dependence on vast inputs of materials and resources. In addition to contributing to chronic problems across the country, today these wastewater infrastructures are in various states of disrepair. Per capita rates of entry are commonly used to measure regional entrepreneurial climate. Yet entry rates vary widely by industry and tend to mirror existing regional specializations. Without controlling for industry mix, factors associated with regional differences in entry may describe the industry base rather than entrepreneurial climate. This study finds that while industry mix explains a potentially large portion regional variation in entry, it does not radically alter the relative standing of the most highly ranked regions. The purpose of this report is to identify and evaluate potential sites for industrial park development in the Town of Southampton, Massachusetts. Graduate students in the Regional Planning Department at the University of Massachusetts and members of the Southampton Economic Development Planning Committee selected the eight sites in this study. The site evaluation criteria chosen for this report are based on criteria used by developers to conduct a preliminary evaluation of sites suitable for industrial park development.

This study investigated the biotechnology industry and the potential for the City of Springfield, Massachusetts to attract and nurture biotechnology firms. To investigate biotechnology location factors, over 20 interviews with experts in biotechnology field were conducted, ten case studies of existing biotechnology centers around the country were analyzed and a literature review was compiled.
