Sprawl In Canada And The United States, Michael Lewyn Dec 2011

Sprawl In Canada And The United States, Michael Lewyn

Michael E Lewyn

The purpose of this Article is to ascertain whether (1) suburban sprawl is as widespread in Canadian metropolitan areas as in their American counterparts, and (2) Canadian government policies, and in particular Canadian zoning law and transportation policies, encourage sprawl. The article concludes that Canadian metropolitan areas are in fact somewhat less sprawling than most of their American counterparts, but that in Canada, as in the United States, government land use regulation and government transportation policy do favor sprawl to some extent. For example, in both nations municipal zoning regulations, by limiting density and forcing landowners to build parking lots, …

The University And Local Economic Development, John R. Mullin, Zeenat Kotval-K, Jonathan G. Cooper

Jonathan G. Cooper

This paper discusses one successful partnership between the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and the City of Springfield in Massachusetts. This collaboration was targeted to benefit the City by helping with their economic revitalization efforts, and the University by giving them a space in downtown Springfield for a ‘Design Center’, where students have a meeting space for studio and field work and can then exhibit their work. The paper ends with a set of principles that can guide other institutions and communities in developing strategic outreach and engagement activities.

The Spatial Extent Of Agglomeration Economies: Evidence From Three U.S. Manufacturing Industries., Joshua Drucker Dec 2011

The Spatial Extent Of Agglomeration Economies: Evidence From Three U.S. Manufacturing Industries., Joshua Drucker

Joshua Drucker

The spatial extent of localized agglomeration economies constitutes one of the central current questions in regional science. It is crucial for understanding firm location decisions and for assessing the influence of proximity in shaping spatial patterns of economic activity, yet clear-cut answers are difficult to come by. Theoretical work often fails to define or specify the spatial dimension of agglomeration phenomena. Existing empirical evidence is far from consistent. Most sources of data on economic performance do not supply micro-level information containing usable geographic locations. This paper provides evidence of the distances across which distinct sources of agglomeration economies generate benefits …

This studio was based on the Fairmount Greenway that was developed through a series of public meetings with the neighborhood community and with consultants from the firm Crosby, Schlessinger and Smallridge (CSS). The Fairmount Greenway, while drawing its identity from the traditional greenway model is in fact a reinterpretation of an urban greenway. The greenway path follows along both primary and secondary city streets because of the lack of space along the rail right-of-way. The Fairmount Greenway begins at what will be a new station stop at New Market South Bay near Upham’s Corner in northern Dorchester. The greenway follows …

Homelessness And Children's Use Of Mental Health Services: A Population-Based Study, Jung Min Park, Stephen Metraux, Dennis P. Culhane, David Mandell

Dennis P. Culhane

This study examined whether children who become homeless differ from other low-income children in their mental health service use before and after their first homeless episode, and to what extent homelessness is associated with an increased likelihood of mental health service use. Differences between children with and without new onset of sheltered homelessness in the use of mental health services emerged following homelessness and widened over time. Sheltered homelessness and foster care placement history were associated with increased odds of receiving inpatient and ambulatory mental health services. Findings underscore the importance of collaborations between homeless assistance, foster care, and mental …

De Invasores A Invadidos, Fernando Carrión Mena Arq. Nov 2011

Hacia Una Nueva Comprensión De La Violencia Y La Seguridad, Fernando Carrión Mena Arq. Oct 2011

Hacia Una Nueva Comprensión De La Violencia Y La Seguridad, Fernando Carrión Mena Arq.

The Right To Housing: An Effective Means For Addressing Homelessness?, Thomas Byrne, Dennis P. Culhane

Dennis P. Culhane

A number of international human rights instruments and national constitutions establish a right to housing. In addition, a few countries, most notably England and France, have enacted legislation guaranteeing a legally enforceable right to housing. In this paper we provide an overview of the concept of a “right to housing,” and discuss its implications for efforts intended to reduce and end homelessness both in the European and American contexts.

This study analyzes HMIS and American Community Survey data from seven jurisdictions to assess the prevalence and relative risk for homelessness among veterans by race, sex, age and poverty status. Results show that among the homeless population, approximately 14% of adult males and 2% of adult females are veterans. For males, this proportion is about 30% greater than the proportion of Veterans in the general population, and twice as large as the proportion of veterans in the population living below the poverty threshold. Similarly among the female homeless population, veterans are overrepresented compared to the general population by a factor …

Conocemos Las Fronteras, Fernando Carrión Mena Arq. Jun 2011

Conocemos Las Fronteras, Fernando Carrión Mena Arq.
