What Comes After The Critique Of The Corporate University? Toward A Syndicalist University, Clyde W. Barrow
What Comes After The Critique Of The Corporate University? Toward A Syndicalist University, Clyde W. Barrow
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
For the past three decades, university faculty have produced a cascade of contemporary protest literature that routinely criticizes the knowledge factory, academic capitalism, managed professionals, college for sale, the university in ruins, the corporate corruption of higher education, and University, Inc. University faculty are regularly warned about the fall of the faculty, the last professors, and the last intellectuals. This article reviews the historical development of the corporate and neoliberal university, but it takes the next step of asking what is to be done after the critique of the corporate university. It calls on faculty to engage in a variety …
Contract, Status And The Bonds Of Welfare, Kenneth Veitch
Contract, Status And The Bonds Of Welfare, Kenneth Veitch
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
This article explores the relationship between contract and status in the context of contemporary social policy. Using examples of contract in the areas of unemployment policy (what is here called the workfare contract) and what has become known as the financialisation of the welfare state (Social Impact Bonds), the article identifies the types of bonds and obligations involved in those contracts and their sources. Drawing critically on Émile Durkheim and Max Weber’s work on the history and pre-history of contract, it is argued that issues of status – the status of the unemployed and capital, amongst others – lie at …
Examining Food Insecurity Among Mississippi Community College Students, Laura Jean Kerr
Examining Food Insecurity Among Mississippi Community College Students, Laura Jean Kerr
Theses and Dissertations
Food insecurity among postsecondary students and especially community colleges is a persistent social problem, but the prevalence continues despite much research. Postsecondary students experience food insecurity slightly differently from the general population and they are held to different rules to qualify for food support such as the supplemental nutrition assistance program (SNAP). In this research I examine the prevalence, frequency, and duration of food insecurity experiences among Mississippi community college students. I begin with a discussion of the literature of food insecurity and policy used to address food insecurity. I draw upon Bourdieu’s theory of social fields, capital, and habitus …

Dismodernizing The Working Class And Social Reproduction, After The Pandemic Lumpenproletariat: Towards An Autonomist Disability Perspective, Arianna Introna Dr
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
Capitalism establishes a fundamental connection between the constitution of society and the sphere of production. Whether in the form of direct participation or indirectly through the performance of social reproduction, the working class is expected to be working. The universals of capitalist society as a work-based society revolve around the material and symbolic centrality of the working class, its struggle and its social reproduction. This association is reinforced by the othering effect that the definitional politics of the universal working class has on subjects defined by their non-relation to the sphere of production, but also by the categories we …
Scrutinizing Precarity: In Search Of Emancipatory Potential, Jaime Aznar Erasun
Scrutinizing Precarity: In Search Of Emancipatory Potential, Jaime Aznar Erasun
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
This paper provides a review and discussion on the emancipatory potential of the notion of ‘precarity’. Since the 1980s, the notion of ‘precarity’ has been used increasingly by scholars and activists to account for variegated grievances. Specifically, it has been used to address issues related to the transformations of labour in the XXIst century: neoliberal reorganization of labour markets, increasing unavailability of stable jobs, increased personal debts, debilitating labour unions or the lack of accessible housing among other issues. However, beyond structural grievances voiced by everyday workers, precarity can also serve as an analytical tool to pin down socially induced …
Contingent Conjunctures And Infrastructures Of Racial Capitalism: Activating And Confining Refugees After The 'Summer Of Migration', Mouna Maaroufi
Contingent Conjunctures And Infrastructures Of Racial Capitalism: Activating And Confining Refugees After The 'Summer Of Migration', Mouna Maaroufi
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
The article retraces the institutional, legal, and societal developments that have accompanied the increasing interlocking of asylum and workfare policies in Germany since the ‘summer of migration’ in 2015. By analyzing the infrastructures, narratives, but also conflicts and contingencies that underlie politics for labor market activation as they are experienced by refugees in Berlin and Brandenburg, ongoing social and institutional struggles around them are illustrated. The article argues that differential and contingent access to workfare measures corresponds to attempts to selectively and logistically activate potential workers for precarious segments and sectors. Infrastructures involved in such differential and confining activation are …
