Broadly speaking, finances are often one of the most strenuous aspects of a relationship. One potential contributing factor to financial conflict experienced by couples are having different beliefs or attitudes towards money, coined previously as money scripts (Klontz, Kahler, & Klontz, 2008). Differing money scripts between partners can cause a breach in understanding of their partner's internal experience around money that may lead to misunderstanding and conflict. This may be magnified for copreneurs, or romantic partners, who integrate a personal and working relationship within a business’s ownership structure. The book focuses on her own experiences of child identity theft and the elder financial exploitation perpetrated by a loved one. Inspired by this experience, Dr. Betz-Hamilton went on to receive a Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies and has since dedicated her research to the area of child identity theft. Abstract

Research has established a link between financial challenges and mental health outcomes. Understanding this linkage among low-income Latinas who face unique experiences and challenges in relation to managing their household finances is important. This study utilized a community-based participatory qualitative research method to explore perspectives on financial and mental health among Latinas residing in Los Angeles County. The implications of this study are applicable when conducting a culturally responsive financial therapy program. Three focus groups were conducted with mainly immigrant, Spanish-speaking, low-income Latinas (n = 37). The study found that though participants face financial stressors tied to managing finances, …

Journal of Financial Therapy

The purpose of this study is to investigate Black-Caribbean and African women’s transnational financial socialization. Analysis of the data show 1) financial socialization in the country of origin: (a) parents stressed the importance of saving, (b) learned about money management explicitly, (c) learned about money management through observation, (d) learned by observing parent’s struggle; and 2) the impact to women’s financial navigation in the U.S.: (a) not receiving financial education, (b) unexpected financial stressors in the U.S., (c) difficulty saving, (d) the need for more financial education. Implications for mental health and financial practitioners and researchers are provided.

In April 2019 the UK government reported that little progress had been made to remedy social outcomes inequality between Roma and the wider population, recommending further recognition of Roma, for example in census data, to enable identification of Roma, their needs, and how to meet those needs. In this article we present an account of one Roma woman’s journey from hiding her identity to celebrating it. This article offers feminist arguments for the reconsideration of consent as a legal concept, informed by insights gained through the work of the #MeToo movement and other feminist campaigns. It suggests that consent may be seen as legally compromised in certain contexts of structured gender inequality, such as domestic violence, workplace sexual harassment, and prostitution. The legal understanding of consent in such contexts is antithetical to the conception of consent as “freely and voluntarily” given within a mutual sexual relationship. The tal-corset movement, a beauty resistance campaign, swept South Korea’s feminist scene in 2018 and became a phenomenon bringing about unprecedented social changes in South Korea. This article explains sociocultural contexts to South Korea’s tal-corset movement through group interviews and examination of online materials. It documents the contemporary history of the development of the movement from a feminist perspective. Findings show that movement participants see beauty practice as social oppression imposed on women’s bodies and appearances and the marker of women’s low social status. The new wave of an online feminist movement that emerged in 2015 created women-only communities that …

I exited from commercial sexual exploitation eight years ago. Here, I share my reflections on how my actions directly impacted other women. I describe how my participation in the sex trade adversely affected the wives and girlfriends of sex buyers. I posit that sex sellers negatively impact these vicarious victims by subscribing to and endorsing “sex work” ideology. I assert that the collective good of all women is diminished by viewing sexual services as a market commodity. I stress that the collective good of all women is enhanced by assuming responsibility and compassion for one another.

There is burgeoning research on intimate partner violence (IPV) experiences among women globally. However, there is a dearth of research on IPV experiences among marginalized populations in Western countries. Over the past decade, IPV research has shifted from a focus only on physical and sexual violence to include coercive control experiences. These include a continuum of nonviolent behaviors centered on maintaining dominance over one’s partner. However, the empirical literature on examining coercive control among women in prostitution within non-commercial intimate partners is lacking. The science of consciousness has traditionally situated knowledge creation in the mind, and thus, marginalizes the knowing body. Returning to the body requires a decolonization of consciousness in Euro-Western research paradigms and in our bodies. This research is grounded in the spirituality indigenous to my Latinx matrilineage known as Mary consciousness, which frames the body as an epistemic pillar of knowledge creation. In response to the increasing rate of grandparent-headed homes and the needs of grandparents and grandchildren, we engaged in a community-university partnership to develop, implement, and evaluate a grandchildren-mentoring program. Prior to developing the grandchildren-mentoring program, a county needs assessment was conducted. The needs assessment revealed that grandparents wanted opportunities for mentorship of their grandchildren. As a result, we partnered with an undergraduate practicum course to create a new option of college students engaging with grandchildren. Understanding The Experiences Of Familiar Identity Theft Victims When A Parent Is The Perpetrator: A Pilot Study, Axton Betz-Hamilton

Incidents of familiar identity theft are becoming more common, yet limited research has explored the experiences of such victims, particularly those who had their identity stolen by a parent. In this qualitative pilot study, six participants shared their experiences during interviews. Data were analyzed using interpretive content analysis. The following preliminary themes emerged from the data: Not Filing a Police Report, Negative Impacts, Positive Impacts, Social and Demographic Factors, and Helpful Resources. Lessons learned regarding methods and suggestions for future research are provided.

Financial Help-Seeking Behaviors Of Young Adults, Christina E. Glenn, Stuart J. Heckman

The financial help-seeking behaviors of Millennials are explored and guided by the Family Financial Socialization conceptual model developed by Gudmunson and Danes (2011). Using data from the 1997 cohort of the National Longitudinal Study of Youth, a random effects probit model was used to estimate the probability of a respondent seeking financial advice at any point in time from 2006 to 2013. Results indicate personal and family demographic characteristics are associated with the decision to seek financial advice. Further analysis was conducted to determine the probability of seeking help from a financial professional. Among those who sought help, gender, marital …
