Student Activism And Curricular Change In Higher Education, Mikaila Arthur
Student Activism And Curricular Change In Higher Education, Mikaila Arthur
Mikaila Mariel Lemonik Arthur
While higher education is still far from universal in the United States, it plays an increasingly large role in shaping our collective understanding of what knowledge counts as legitimate and important. Therefore, understanding the college curriculum and how it is changed and shaped helps us to understand the overall dynamics of knowledge in contemporary society. This book considers the emergence of three curricular fields that have developed and spread over the past half century in American higher education - Women's studies, Asian American studies and Queer/LGBT studies. It details the broader history of their development as knowledge fields and then …

Racial Battle Fatigue And The Miseducation Of Black Men: Racial Microaggressions, Societal Problems, And Environmental Stress, William A. Smith, Man Hung, Jeremy D. Franklin
Jeremy D. Franklin
Black men's lives are racialized contradictions. They are told that contemporary educational and professional institutions—particularly historically White institutions (HWIs)—are places where, through hard work, they can achieve the so-called American dream. However, for far too many Black men, HWIs represent racial climates that are replete with gendered racism, blocked opportunities, and mundane, extreme, environmental stress (MEES). This study examined the experiences of 661 Black men. A structural equation modeling approach was used to analyze the data. Findings indicate that as educational attainment increases toward college completion, both racial microaggressions and societal problems contribute to more than one third of the …

The Spectre Of Class: Educating And Advising For Self-Efficacy, Mikaila Arthur
Mikaila Mariel Lemonik Arthur
In her essay “The Spectre of Class: Educating and Advising for Self-Efficacy” Mikaila Mariel Lemonik Arthur discusses the importance of building student self-efficacy. However, as Arthur points out, creating an environment where students believe in their capabilities to learn and perform at a particular level is deeply influenced by one’s class background. As Arthur states, “These students have grown up in a culture that values individualism and places responsibility for success and blame for failure squarely on the shoulders of each person.” Arthur speaks more generally about creating self-efficacy and offers insight in how to maneuver around and transcend the …

The Increasing Expectation Of Relevance For Higher Education And The Academic Profession: Some Reflections On The Case Of Mexico, Jesús F. Galaz-Fontes, Laura E. Padilla-González, Manuel Gil-Antón
Jesús Francisco Galaz Fontes
Developments in the global context and in national conditions have stimulated a re-examination of higher education relevance in the context of the increasing role of knowledge in the economic and social life of nations. In general, and such is the case also for Mexico, there are increasing expectations regarding higher education potential contribution to society. In this essay we discuss, in the context of the recent evolution of Mexican higher education, the drivers that are elevating the relevance expectations that Mexicans have of higher education. After that, we elaborate how higher education growth dynamics and the increasing social expectations regarding …
