Los Académicos Mexicanos A Principios Del Siglo Xxi: Una Primera Exploración Sobre Quiénes Son Y Cómo Perciben Su Trabajo, Sus Instituciones Y Algunas Políticas Públicas, Jesús F. Galaz-Fontes

Unforeseen Consequences Of Mothers’ Return To School On Children’S Education Aspirations And Outcomes, J. Jill Suitor, Mari Plikuhn, Megan Gilligan, Rebecca S. Powers

Megan Gilligan

Parents' educational attainment is generally completed before offspring are born. Thus, there is little opportunity to study the ways in which children's observation of their parents' pursuit of education may augment the effects of structural factors on intergenerational transmission processes. In this article, the authors use qualitative and quantitative data collected from thirty-five women across a decade following their return to school to examine the effects of children's observations of their mothers' educational achievements on the children's educational aspirations and achievements in adulthood. The return to school was consequential only when mothers completed their degrees; when they did not, their …

Research On The Experiences Of International Graduate Students: A Selective Literature Review, Bryan M. Carson Jan 2008

Research On The Experiences Of International Graduate Students: A Selective Literature Review, Bryan M. Carson

Bryan M. Carson

In 2003, there were 586,523 international students in U.S. institutions. International students make up 13 percent of U.S. graduate students, and account for one-fifth of all doctorates. Some students remain in the U.S., while others return to their home countries. Either way, however, international students represent a very significant portion of the U.S. higher education field. Yet the literature on international graduate students is surprisingly sparse. While there are many studies of the international graduate student experience, they tend to focus mostly on language acquisition, academics, acculturation and social adaptation. There are few well-constructed theoretical, qualitative, or quantitative studies dealing …

College Knowledge: An Assessment Of Urban Students’ Awareness Of College Processes., Douglas Burelson, Ronald Hallett, Daniel Park

Ronald Hallett

The contemporary college or university campus is a complex and dynamic environment that requires students to navigate myriad institutional processes. College preparedness is not simply a matter of being academically ready for postsecondary-level work, but also requires that students have a procedural knowledge of other university processes - what we define herein as "college knowledge." This article presents that results of an evaluation of a college preparation program that focuses on college knowledge and provides a road map for designing an effective college knowledge program.

Group presentations are the common ways to communicate information about financial aid to high school students. This article discusses the value of group presentation and suggests that additional techniques should supplement this approach, especially in the case of low-income urban college-bound students.

Laboring To Learn: Women's Literacy And Poverty In The Post-Welfare Era., Lorna Rivera Dec 2007

Laboring To Learn: Women's Literacy And Poverty In The Post-Welfare Era., Lorna Rivera

Lorna Rivera

The American adult education system has become an alternative for school dropouts, with some state welfare policies requiring teen mothers and women without high school diplomas to participate in adult education programs to receive aid. Currently, low-income women of color are more likely to be enrolled in the lowest levels of adult basic education. Very little has been published about women's experiences in these mandatory programs and whether the programs reproduce the conditions that forced women to drop out in the first place.

Lorna Rivera bridges the gap with this important study, the product of ten years' active ethnographic research …

Kicking The Habitus:Power, Culture And Pedagogy In The Secondary School Music Curriculum, Ruth Wright

Ruth Wright Dr

Within a theoretical framework drawn from sociologists of education Bourdieu and Bernstein, this paper will examine some of the findings of an ethnographic case study conducted with a secondary school music teacher and one class of her pupils in Wales. This teacher attracted 25% of Year 10 (14-year-old) pupils to study music as an optional subject against a national background of 8% average. The study attempted to examine the lived experiences of the participants in music at home and school. Teacher and pupils had much to say about music teaching and learning in the classroom and beyond. Much of the …
