Growth And Species Interactions Of Eucalyptus Pellita In A Mixed And Monoculture Plantation In The Humid Tropics Of North Queensland, Mila Bristow, Jerome K. Vanclay, Lyndon O. Brooks, Mark Hunt

Dr Lyndon O Brooks

This study investigated whether mixed-species designs can increase the growth of a tropical eucalypt when compared to monocultures. Monocultures of Eucalyptus pellita (E) and Acacia peregrina (A) and mixtures in various proportions (75E:25A, 50E:50A, 25E:75A) were planted in a replacement series design on the Atherton Tablelands of north Queensland, Australia. High mortality in the establishment phase due to repeated damage by tropical cyclones altered the trial design. Effects of experimental designs on tree growth were estimated using a linear mixed effects model with restricted maximum likelihood analysis (REML). Volume growth of individual eucalypt trees were positively affected by the presence …

Supply Issues For Science Academics In Australia: Now And In The Future, Daniel Edwards, Fred Smith Jun 2010

Supply Issues For Science Academics In Australia: Now And In The Future, Daniel Edwards, Fred Smith

Dr Daniel Edwards

Australia, like the rest of the developed world, is in the midst of dealing with notable issues related to the age structure of its academic workforce. These issues are widespread and have been articulated in the Australian context most comprehensively by Hugo (2008). This paper investigates issues with demographic change and other key

factors related to the desirability of a science or mathematics academic career within

Australian universities. It draws on the findings of a research project undertaken in 2008

for the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. The findings show that while demographic issues are not as dire …

Mother Earth "Speaks": Change Yourself, Change The World, Use The Archetypal Energy "Harmony" As A Guide, Carroy U. Ferguson Jun 2010

Mother Earth "Speaks": Change Yourself, Change The World, Use The Archetypal Energy "Harmony" As A Guide, Carroy U. Ferguson

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

In relation to the Cosmos, we all, as human beings, live on this tiny planet we call Earth, a planet that supports and sustains life, as we know it. There are many different kinds of people, plants, and animals functioning in harmony with soil, air, and water--all linked to one another in a complex web of life to form one Earth community. Unfortunately, we often take this miracle and ecosystem of life for granted. When, however, we take the ecosystem of life too much for granted, Mother Earth "speaks," reflecting imbalances and dis-harmonies. When Mother Earth "speaks," her message is …

O Açúcar Do Nordeste Brasileiro Em Crise, 1918-45, Heitor Moura Filho Apr 2010

O Açúcar Do Nordeste Brasileiro Em Crise, 1918-45, Heitor Moura Filho

Heitor Moura Filho

The economic crises of 1929 represented another stage in the series of difficulties faced by sugar producers of Northeastern Brazil since the end of WWI. These regional producers suffered a long process of decline, throughout the decade from 1925 to 1935. Though the Northeastern States used an important political clout to defend their interests, the economic capacity of the State of São Paulo, as reflected in the capitals which chose to invest in sugar and in its local markets for both sugar and fuel ethanol, allowed new mills to be established and old ones to be expanded, during a period …

Antimicrobial And Antioxidant Activities Of Essential Oil And Methanol Extract Of Jasminum Sambac From Djibouti, Fatou Abdoul-Latif, Prosper Edou, François Eba, Nabil Mohamed, Adwa Ali, Samatar Djama, Louis-Clément Obame, Mamoudou Hama Dicko Mar 2010

Antimicrobial And Antioxidant Activities Of Essential Oil And Methanol Extract Of Jasminum Sambac From Djibouti, Fatou Abdoul-Latif, Prosper Edou, François Eba, Nabil Mohamed, Adwa Ali, Samatar Djama, Louis-Clément Obame, Mamoudou Hama Dicko

Pr. Mamoudou H. DICKO, PhD

The essential oil of jasminum sambac from Djibouti was subjected to screening for their possible antioxidant activity by two complementary test systems, namely DPPH free radical scavenging and beta-carotene-linoleic acid assays. Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) was used as positive control in both test systems. In the DPPH test system, the IC50 value of essential oil and methanol extract were respectively 7.43 and 2.30 μg/ml. In the beta-carotene-linoleic acid system, oxidation was effectively inhibited by Jasminum sambac, the RAA value of essential oil and methanol extract were respectively 96.6 and 93.9%. When compared to BHT, the essential oil and methanol extract had …

Causal Effects Of Single-Sex Schools On College Entrance Exams And College Attendance: Random Assignment In Seoul High Schools, Hyunjoon Park, Jere R. Behrman, Jaesung Choi Jan 2010

Causal Effects Of Single-Sex Schools On College Entrance Exams And College Attendance: Random Assignment In Seoul High Schools, Hyunjoon Park, Jere R. Behrman, Jaesung Choi

Hyunjoon Park

Despite the voluminous literature on the potentials of single-sex schools, there is no consensus on the effects of single-sex schools because of student selection of school types. We exploit a unique feature of schooling in Seoul, the random assignment of students into single-sex versus coeducational high schools, to assess causal effects of single-sex schools on college entrance exam scores and college attendance. Our validation of the random assignment shows comparable socioeconomic backgrounds and prior academic achievement of students attending single-sex schools and coeducational schools, which increases the credibility of our causal estimates of single-sex school effects. Attending all-boys schools or …

This text discusses problems found in the analysis of death statistics, specially in the calculation of gross or specific mortality rates, based on incomplete demographic records, such as common in 19th- and early 20th-century Brazil.

Energy Abundance, Trade And Industry Location, Nicole Andréa Mathys, Reyer Gerlagh Jan 2010

Energy Abundance, Trade And Industry Location, Nicole Andréa Mathys, Reyer Gerlagh

Nicole Andréa Mathys

We study the effect of countries’ energy abundance on trade and sector activity, conditional on sector’s energy intensity, using an unbalanced panel with 14 high-income countries from Europe, America and Asia, 10 broad sectors, and years 1970-1997. We find that (i) countries with large energy endowments have low energy prices, and are thus energy abundant both on micro and macro level. (ii) Energy abundant countries have a high level of energy embodied in exports relative to imports. (iii) Energy intensive sectors export from and (iv) have higher economic activity in energy abundant countries. (v) The trade and location effects increase …

International Law, State Sovereignty And Transboundary Waters, Aguinaldo Alemar Jan 2010

International Law, State Sovereignty And Transboundary Waters, Aguinaldo Alemar

Aguinaldo Alemar

The current status of transboundary water resources is to claim a more proactive posture by the sovereign states, mainly those having large reserves of fresh water shared. This new posture involves actions between the states as a key condition to the success of any enterprise that aims to protect the environment. It intends to prove that other actors - national and international - are already mobilizing themselves to consider water as a "common heritage of mankind" and, as such, water must be considered above the classical concepts of sovereignty and territory, excelling by the humanitarian interest that it arouses. At …

Gender, Resources, And Wife Abuse In Hong Kong, Adam Ka-Lok Cheung, Susanne Yuk-Ping Choi Jan 2010

Gender, Resources, And Wife Abuse In Hong Kong, Adam Ka-Lok Cheung, Susanne Yuk-Ping Choi

Adam Ka-Lok Cheung

Wife abuse is the most common form of violence against women. Using original couple data collected from 871 families in a New Town in Hong Kong, this study examines the interplay between gender role attitudes of husband and resources disparities between husband and wife on wife abuse. Our findings show that compared with women from families where men were the sole providers, women from dual earner families who earned more than their husbands had a greater risk of violence, while women who earned less than their husbands had a lower risk of violence. The risk of violence against women who …

A Global Perspective On Happiness And Fertility, Rachel Margolis, Mikko Myrskyla Dec 2009

A Global Perspective On Happiness And Fertility, Rachel Margolis, Mikko Myrskyla

Rachel Margolis

The literature on fertility and happiness has neglected comparative analysis. we investigate the fertility/happiness association using data from the world values Surveys for 86 countries. we fnd that, globally, happiness decreases with the number of children. this association, however, is strongly modifed by individual and contextual factors. most importantly, we find that the association between happiness and fertility evolves from negative to neutral to positive above age 40, and is strongest among those who are likely to beneft most from upward intergenerational transfers. in addition, analyses by welfare regime show that the negative fertility/ happiness association for younger adults is …

Gay And Lesbian Elders: History, Law, And Identity Politics In The United States, Nancy J. Knauer Dec 2009

Gay And Lesbian Elders: History, Law, And Identity Politics In The United States, Nancy J. Knauer

Nancy J. Knauer

The approximately two million gay and lesbian elders in the United States are an underserved and understudied population. At a time when gay men and lesbians enjoy an unprecedented degree of social acceptance and legal protection, many elders face the daily challenges of aging isolated from family, detached from the larger gay and lesbian community, and ignored by mainstream aging initiatives. Drawing on materials from law, history, and social theory, this book integrates practical proposals for reform with larger issues of sexuality and identity. Beginning with a summary of existing demographic data and offering a historical overview of pre-Stonewall views …

Differential Association Theory And Juvenile Delinquency In Ghana’S Capital City - Accra: The Case Of Ghana Borstal Institute, Thomas Antwi Bosiakoh, Paul Kofi Andoh Dec 2009

Differential Association Theory And Juvenile Delinquency In Ghana’S Capital City - Accra: The Case Of Ghana Borstal Institute, Thomas Antwi Bosiakoh, Paul Kofi Andoh

Dr Thomas ANTWI BOSIAKOH

Current sociological theories argue that, delinquency results from economic and family relational problems. Unable to have their parents meet their material needs, children turn to all sorts of activities, many of which eventually lead to delinquent acts. Other theories focus on the role of peer relationships in determining deviancy. Using Edwin Sutherland’s differential association theory, this study explores the notion that, delinquency in inmates of the Ghana borstal institute is a reflection of the peer groups/friendship relations they hanged out with. Data for the study were collected from the Ghana borstal institute, a correctional institution for reforming juvenile offenders with …

State Policy, Depeasantisation And Agrarian Change: The Effects Of The Presidential Special Initiative (Psi) On Cassava-Starch On Peasant Farmers’ Socio-Economic Livelihood, Paul Kofi Andoh, Thomas Antwi Bosiakoh Dec 2009

State Policy, Depeasantisation And Agrarian Change: The Effects Of The Presidential Special Initiative (Psi) On Cassava-Starch On Peasant Farmers’ Socio-Economic Livelihood, Paul Kofi Andoh, Thomas Antwi Bosiakoh

Dr Thomas ANTWI BOSIAKOH

This study focuses on the interface between state policy initiatives, the process of depeasantisation and agrarian change, using the Presidential Special Initiative on Cassava-Starch as a case. Employing both quantitative and qualitative data gathering techniques, primary data were collected from six farming communities in the Awutu-Effutu-Senya and Atebubu-Amantin districts of the Central and Brong Ahafo regions of Ghana. The analysis of primary data revealed that with the right policy initiatives by the state, it is possible to systematically incorporate peasant farmers into mainstream economy and to improve their socio-economic livelihoods. To this extent, the study recommends among others that given …

Leadership And Membership Structure Of Migrant Associations: The Case Of Nigerian Migrant Associations In Accra, Ghana, Thomas Antwi Bosiakoh Dec 2009

Leadership And Membership Structure Of Migrant Associations: The Case Of Nigerian Migrant Associations In Accra, Ghana, Thomas Antwi Bosiakoh

Dr Thomas ANTWI BOSIAKOH

Migrant associations are a worldwide phenomenon, featuring in much of the migration studies literature. However, much of these studies focus on migrant associations in theUSA mostly of Latino migrants from Central and Latin America. In Africa and more particularly Ghana, literature on migrant associations is paltry. The few that exist only explore their development impacts on the migration sending areas. In this paper, I explore three Nigerian migrant associations in Accra, Ghana. The leadership and membership structures of the Nigerian Women, Nigerian Committee of Brothers and the Edo State associations in Accra, Ghana are under the spotlight of this discourse. …
