Social support has been shown to play a key role in overcoming adversities associated with marginalized identities, yet there is a dearth of information regarding the role of social networks in the gender transition process, particularly in ethnic minority transgender communities. This study uses life history narratives, and a modified grounded theory analysis, to explore the impact of interpersonal relationships on the gender transition process of Black transgender women in Detroit, Michigan. The following interpersonal interactions were significant: family reactions to self-recognition of femininity, coming out as gay prior to transgender identity disclosure, contact with an out transwoman, emotional and …

Introduction: The majority of African American college students in the U.S. attend predominantly white institutions (PWIs). However, there is minimal research examining this population’s HIV/STI risk behaviors. The purpose of this investigation was to assess HIV/STI behavioral risk factors among African American college students (aged 18 – 24years) attending PWIs. (n = 2,568) Methods: Backwards step-wise logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine factors associated with a positive HIV/STI diagnosis (past year) among sexually active African American college students who participated in the Spring, 2006 National College Health Assessment. Findings: Nine factors were significantly associated with an HIV/STI diagnosis among …

Everybody’S Doin’ It (Right?): Neighborhood Norms And Sexual Activity In Adolescence, Tara D. Warner, Peggy C. Giordano, Wendy D. Manning, Monica A. Longmore

A neighborhood’s normative climate is linked to, but conceptually distinct from, its structural characteristics such as poverty and racial/ethnic composition. Given the deleterious consequences of early sexual activity for adolescent health and well-being, it is important to assess normative influences on youth behaviors such as sexual debut, number of sex partners, and involvement in casual sexual experiences. The current study moves beyond prior research by constructing a measure of normative climate that more fully captures neighborhood norms, and analyzing the influence of normative climate on behavior in a longitudinal framework. Using recently geo-coded data from the Toledo Adolescent Relationships Study …

Mixed Immigration Status Households In The Context Of Arizona’S Anti-Immigrant Policies, Anna O. Oleary, Azucena Sanchez
Anna Ochoa OLeary
Although the seeds of legislated restrictions for immigrants can be traced to 1986 with California’s unsuccessful Prop 187, more recent trends epitomized by Arizona’s proposed Senate Bill 1070, signed by that state’s governor in April, 2010, have renewed concerns about the effects that such measures will have on the life and livelihood of communities that include immigrants present in the country without official authorization (“undocumented immigrants”). In this paper we use some of the results of a binational study of reproductive health care strategies to show how emerging anti-immigrant policies neglect how such policies impact mixed immigration status households, a …

Three faculty members and two program directors in Women's/Gender/Men's Studies contend that Men's Studies can provide an important complement to Women's Studies programs. The director of Women's Studies at Saint Cloud State University, Minnesota, discusses the incorporation of gender studies into Women's Studies programs; a program director describes the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University's (CSB/SJU) evolution from a position where many Women's Studies faculty were wary of Men's Studies to support of the incorporation of Men's Studies as an explicit requirement of two required courses for their Gender and Women's Studies minor; two longtime Gender and Women's Studies faculty …

Of Information Highways And Toxic Byways: Women And Environmental Protest In A Northern Mexican City, Anna O. Oleary
Anna Ochoa OLeary
This case study of community protest in Hermosillo, a Mexican city in the state of Sonora, outlines s a postmodern model of environmental protest as one that primarily carried out by women and social networking. The model of community highlights the use of social networks as a means of politicizing a toxic waste dump eight kilometers outside the city. A feminist perspective reveals a struggle primarily carried out by women and bears out the intersection of gender, environmentalism, and globalization. As familiar spaces of social interaction, social networks provided the cultural platform from which women agitated for the dump’s closure. …
