The purpose of this study was focused in two specific objectives: (1) to determine attitudes of professionals, namely pediatricians, general practitioners, and orthodontists toward the use of the oral pacifier; and (2) to determine the attitudes of primiparous mothers toward the use of the pacifier.

The mothers were chosen from the r1cKay-Dee Hospital in Oqden, Utah. They were divided into three groups: (1) 17 mothers with three-month- old babies, (2) 15 mothers with six-month-old babies, and (3 ) 15 mothers with nine-month-old babies, for a total of 47 mothers.

Paper waste discarded by families of five persons in Cache County was studied for two seven-day periods. The sample consisted of 19 families comprised of a father who was employed full-time, a mother, and three children living at home. A background questionnaire was administered to each family for the purpose of describing the sample.

Sample families were given (1) plastic bags for storing of paper wastes and (2) bathroom tissue, the unused portion of which was collected with the other paper discards. The weight of all paper discards was tabulated for each family and an average was tabulated for families …

The purpose of this thesis was to examine children's perceptions of policemen as these are related to the social environment in which he lives; and to investigate the social class, sex, and racial influences upon their perceptions.

An oral picture test, consisting of 12 pictures, was administered to 39 fourth-grade children in two Ogden, Utah, public schools.

The findings of this study is that there is mixed support for the hypothesis that significant differences exist between middle- and lower-class children in their perceptions of policemen. The primary purpose of this study was to present a sociological analysis of American Buddhism in northern Utah. Specifically, the analysis covered the acculturation changes of American Buddhism in X __ , Utah, the functions of the acculturation changes, and the effects of secularization on the Buddhists.

Relationship Of The Self-Concept To Selected Measures Of Performance Among Male Navajo Students At Intermountain School, Melvern Eugene Graham

The relationship of various measures of high school performance and a measure of the self-concept were examined for the 1970-71 senior male students at Intermountain School, Brigham City, Utah. Some significant correlations were found.

Their junior year vocational training grade and grade point average were found to be significantly correlated to their self-definition score, as ere all but one of the teachers' subjective evaluations.

General aptitude, reading ability, previous years at Intermountain, and class grouping were not found to show any significant correlation with the self-definition test score. Age was found to be correlated at the .01 level with the …

Purpose was to collect and sample the attitudes of "blue collar" adolescents toward the employment of women and child rearing practices. Data were from 304 adolescents whose father s fit the requirements of being "blue collar." A questionnaire was administered that asked for attitudes and reactions to questions related to the employment of a woman through the normal stages of a family cycle and for attitudes related to child rearing practices.

Self-evaluation in home management and its relationship to achievement motivation was investigated. The discrepancy between student self-evaluation and adviser evaluation was correlated with achievement motivation.

The sample consisted of 33 female students, residents of -the Home Management House during Spring Quarter of the 1968-69 school year and Fall and Winter Quarters of the 1969-70 school year.

The instruments used were: (1) a background questionnaire; (2) Management Resource Scale, and (3) Litwin Decision-Making Test. The statistical test used was the Pearson r (correlation coefficient).

Recent research studies indicate the importance of sensory input in the development of perceptual skills. Learning the alphabet, an abstract symbol system, is considered a perceptual task. The major purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of a visual experience reinforced by a sensori-motor experience in improving the ability of kindergarten pupils to perceive the configuration of alphabet letters and the order of these letters in a word.

Two separate kindergarten classes were selected as the experimental and control groups. The learning task was individualized through the use of each subject's own name.

This study was done to determine whether maternal employment affected the child's perception of male roles. The study was designed to see if the child viewed the male in a more negative or positive way or if he perceived the male as taking more instrumental or expressive roles when the child's mother was employed. The hypotheses predicted that there would be no difference in the children's perceptions of male roles between mother-employed and mother-not-employed groups, and that there would also be no difference between the sexes on children's perceptions of male roles .

A determination was made of the degree to which the four requirements of Gault were met in District I of the Utah Juvenile Court between July 1, 1967 and June 30, 1969. The requirements handed down in 1967 by the U. S. Supreme Court were as follows: (a) guarantee to the right of notice given to the juvenile himself and to his parents; (b) right to counsel, representation by counsel in juvenile delinquency proceedings; (c) right to confrontation and cross-examination by prosecuting witness; and (d) privilege against self-incrimination in juvenile delinquency proceedings.

The types and frequency of deviance, and the relationship between deviance and factors in the pre-Intermountain, Intermountain, and post-Intermountain experiences were studied using the male population of the 1964 graduating class at Intermountain School, Brigham City, Utah.

Among the important findings are the following. Of 233 total deviant acts, 84 were time schedule violations and 66 were drinking and drinking-related violations. The quantitative pattern of deviance was about the same during the sophomore and junior years and then decreased during the senior year. There was an inverse relationship between family size and deviance. The lowest average deviance rate occurred among …

The relationship of traditionalism (knowledge of traditional stories), teachers' evaluations of traits (skill, punctuality, security, leadership, use of English, and personal appearance), social relationships (manner of relating, friends--non-Indian or Indian, who do they talk to about problems, and marital status), and productive activity (amount of time spent in employment, school, and military) to existing attitudes toward reservation living, non-Indian way of life, and a combination of the two attitudes, attitudes toward life, was studied for the Navajo male 1964 graduates from Intermountain School by using simple correlation and other methods.

The findings of this study indicated, contrary to expectations, that irrigation farmers who expressed needs for water did not engage in certain types of goal-oriented behavior designed to resolve those needs any more so than did those who did not express these needs. There were four measures of goal-orientation which included: Attendance at meetings about the Bear River Project, actively seeking information about said Project and positive attitude toward development of the Bear River.

During the 1965-66 school year a study was made of 250 ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students attending the West Seminary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Brigham City. The object was to determine the extent to which the Latter-day Saint families in this area were holding the Family Horne Evening Program and what variables influenced their participation.

Sixty percent of those interviewed said they participated in the Family Horne Evening Program when it was first introduced to the Church membership. Eight months later participation had dropped to 40 percent. It was found that patterns …

In 1942, the Navy Department constructed a Naval Supply Depot at Clearfield, Utah. The northern part of Davis County was still in the grips of the Depression of the 1930's. Therefore, the Public Housing Administration constructed a temporary housing unit of cinderblocks under the authorization of the Lehman Act of 1940 for those who came to the Clearfield area for employment. It was named Anchorage. In 1955, the Federal Government sold Anchorage to Clearfield City for $20,451.70.

Clearfield City hired a crew of three men to maintain the project. The maintenance of the project slowly deteriorated through the years. Major …

Previous studies have indicated the importance of teacher attitudes on the development of creativity in children. There were several purposes for this investigation. The major purpose was to develop an instrument to measure teacher attitudes toward creativity in children. The second step was the utilization of the instrument to determine if teachers trained in child development are more positive in their attitudes toward creativity than teachers with little or no background in child development. The purpose was to determine how husbands and wives who had been separated because of the war in Vietnam perceived each other during separation. Martial roles were used as the vehicle to convey perception.

A random sample of Jl couples was selected from among the married officers and enlisted men of Marine All Weather Attack Squadron 225 which was based at DaNang, South Vietnam. A questionnaire designed to determine perception of spouse was sent to men in Vietnam and to their wives who resided in various parts of the United States.

The Metropolitan Readiness Test, 1964 edition, Form A, was administered to forty children who were enrolled in kindergarten classes in Logan, Utah, during the school year 1967-1968. Twenty of these children (nursery attenders) had attended the Utah State University Child Development Laboratory for at least two, but not more than three quarters with at least half of this nursery experience being during the year preceding kindergarten. The other 20 children (non-attenders) had not experienced any type of pre-school or day care program prior to kindergarten. In a historical frame of reference, this is a study of rural-urban migration to demonstrate the process of urbanization in Utah between 1900 and 1960.

This study estimates the amount of internal migration for the state of Utah. Selected demographic variables such as size, age, and sex of the migrating population are studied. Changes in the population composition of the sending and receiving areas as a complement of rural-urban migration constitute the crux of this study.

The rural-urban differential was investigated in its relationship to certain expressed attitudes relating to natural resource development, use, and control. The rural-urban differential was also investigated as a variable affecting expressed attitudes toward the educational, economic, and political institutions. The two sets of expressed attitudes were then correlated to each other.

A difference was found between the rural and the urban groups regarding their expressed attitudes concerning natural resource development, use, and control. This is an historical study of the volume and direction of intercensal net migration for Utah, from 1870 to 1960. Some of the demographic characteristics of net migrants are also estimated and some inferences of the impact of net migration on Utah's socio-economic development is considered.

Of necessity, indirect methods of migration estimation are used. Those used are: (1) Place-of-birth method, (2) Census survival ratio method and (3) Place-of-birth census survival ratio method.

Attitudes of caseworkers and supervisors in public welfare agencies were studied with regard to the following subjects: (1) the public assistance program in Utah, (2) the welfare recipient, (3) family planning as a means of dealing with poverty, (4) government participation in the public assistance program, (5) methods of rehabilitation, (6) community support of welfare agency, and (7) positive and negative aspects of casework. Data were analyzed statistically with regard to age, education, political preference, and sex. An analysis of variance was made, and the F test applied to determine significance levels.
