Access To International Volunteering, Amanda Moore Mcbride, Benjamin J. Lough
Access To International Volunteering, Amanda Moore Mcbride, Benjamin J. Lough
Center for Social Development Research
This analysis examines rates of international volunteering among various demographic groups in the United States using data from the 2005 Current Population Survey. We use logistic regression analyses to address the importance of inclusion. Those most likely to serve overseas are white, highly educated, young, foreign-born individuals without dependent children in the home and not employed full-time. As a type of volunteering implemented primarily through the nonprofit sector, these findings suggest implications for recruitment and retention of volunteers who serve abroad.

The Growth Of Nonprofit Accounting And It's Impact On Human Services, Roger A. Lohmann
The Growth Of Nonprofit Accounting And It's Impact On Human Services, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Changes in nonprofit accounting standards and practices have spearheaded a quiet revolution in financial management practice in social agencies and the delivery of human services during the past three decades. These changes have gone hand-in-glove with other changes in the political arena to dramatically transform the ways in which human services are organized and delivered. At the core of this transition has been the movement from fund to enterprise accounting, together with such larger political developments as the expansion of grant-based relations with government into the performance management environment of purchase of service contracting.

“You’D Be Depressed Too”: Treatment Acceptability Among Mothers Who Are Economically Disadvantaged, L. Kris Gowen
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Although mothers who are economically disadvantaged have high rates of emotional distress, the rate of their use of mental health services is relatively low. What accounts for this underutilization of care? Although there is evidence that insurance coverage and access to care account for some of this disparity, barriers to mental health services reach beyond basic access issues. When considering why some choose to seek mental health care while others do not, it is important to consider treatment acceptability among low-income mothers.
Treatment acceptability is the extent to which recipients of care perceive that care as “reasonable, justified, fair, and …

Exploring Saving Performance In An Ida For People With Disabilities: Some Preliminary Findings, Margaret Lombe, Jin Huang, Michelle Putnam, Kate Cooney
Center for Social Development Research
Asset development policies have been promoted as a means to create a more inclusive “ownership society.” During the past few years, asset building scholarship has begun to focus specifically on marginalized groups including persons with disabilities. Using a sample of Individual Development Account (IDA) program participants (N=376), we examine effects of disability status on IDA saving performance; we also assess variations in saving performance by individual and programmatic characteristics. Our results suggest that disability status, in addition to a number of individual and program characteristics, is associated with saving performance in an IDA. Implications for practice and scholarship are presented.

Equal Opportunity For All?: Parental Economic Resources And Children's Educational Achievement, Yunju Nam, Jin Huang

We investigate the roles of parents’ economic resources in children’s educational attainment and test the liquidity constraint hypothesis. Using data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, we find that parents’ liquid assets have significantly positive associations with years of schooling, high school graduation, and college attendance. We find that the relationship between liquid assets and education is non-linear: children from negative liquid asset households have a higher chance of finishing high school but a lower chance of graduating college than those from zero liquid asset households. Results suggest that we should consider assets when seeking to understand educational mobility.

Raising Parent Expectations: Can Wealth And Parent College Accounts Help?, William Elliott Iii, Kristen Wagner

For many children, especially minority and low-income children, attending college is a genuinely desired but elusive goal. Research on aspirations and expectations provides a way to understand the gap between what children desire and what they actually expect to happen. This study examines the potential role of children’s college accounts (CCAs) as a way to reduce the gap between aspirations and expectations among at-risk children. I find that only 39 percent of children without savings for college expect to attend college; there is an aspirations/expectations gap of 41 percentage points among children with CCAs. Moreover, children with a CCA are …

Asset building is a growing theme in public policy, and building assets from birth in the form of Child Development Accounts is now occurring in several countries. This paper provides an overview of the Child Development Account policies in Singapore, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Korea, and the proposed policy in the United States. The key elements of inclusiveness, progressivity, coherence and integration, and development are explicated and discussed.

The paper examines the impact of a comprehensive housing development program initiated by a nonprofit organization working in a small municipality in St. Louis County, Missouri. The development program includes rental housing, for sale housing and repair grants to existing residents. The analysis serves both as opportunity to test hedonic price modeling on the housing work and as an examination of the applicability of such techniques in evaluation of local community development efforts. The analysis finds evidence of price differential comparing municipal sales to sales within a comparable, larger geographic area, with a negative differential switching to positive over the …

Household Assets And Health In China: Evidence And Policy Implications, Baorong Guo, Lin Zhang, Michael Sherraden
Center for Social Development Research
China’s health care reform of the 1990s has not yielded much success. The market-oriented health system has resulted in declines in fairness of health services and efficiency of investment in the health sector. Further health care reform will be required. Among many options, asset-based policy has demonstrated some potential in domestic policy development. To provide evidence to inform health policy development in China, this study focuses on effects of household assets on health in China. Specifically, the current study examines how household assets may affect health status and how assets differ from income in predicting health status. Using a random …

Where Is 'Community' In Community Based Forestry?, Courtney G. Flint, A. E. Luloff, James C. Finley
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Community-based forestry and community-based natural resource management have become increasingly common terms in both the scientific and popular press. However, as with so many other concepts currently in vogue, rarely do studies invoking them incorporate either a grounded theoretical understanding or practical inclusion of the central term: community. Community emerges through communication and interaction among people who care about each other and the place they live. In its purest form, community is marked by its multiple and often conflicting perspectives. This article draws upon recent research experience with the Ford Foundation's community-based forestry initiative to illustrate the importance of solidly …

A literature survey of government and private studies have found that Thimerosal not to be a cause of auism. The reliance on limited, flawed and outdated studies on the effect of ethyl-mercury suggest that more research is needed to understand the effects of ethyl-mercury and particularly Thimerosal. In the meantime efforts should be increased to remove Thimerosal from vaccines world-wide.
The Increase Of Bipolar Disorder In Children And Adolescents, Kristen Wroblewski
The Increase Of Bipolar Disorder In Children And Adolescents, Kristen Wroblewski
Social Work Theses
This cluster study investigates the different possibilities that may have caused an increase in the diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder in children and adolescents, including comparison to diagnosis in other countries. The same criteria for diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder for adults are used for children and adolescents, which may be misdiagnosed due to other disorders having the same characteristics, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In the cluster study, current and past students’ files at an alternative school were analyzed to determine whether the diagnosis had increased within the setting. Main findings were that Bipolar Disorder did increase over the …
The Relationship Between Parental Substance Abuse And The Effects On Young Children, Lindsey Capaldi
The Relationship Between Parental Substance Abuse And The Effects On Young Children, Lindsey Capaldi
Social Work Theses
This was a relational study investigating the implications of a parents drug use on a young child’s life. A review of the literature revealed that a child is severely impacted by their parent’s drug and alcohol abuse. Prenatal or postnatal use of drugs or alcohol can mean health, mental, social and emotional issues for a child. The relational study compared children whose parents have a history of drug or alcohol abuse to the children whose parents did not. The sample was observed in the Head Start setting and consisted of 77 children. The children whose family life did not include …
Foster Youth And The "Aging Out" Age In Rhode Island, Kelsey Creeden
Foster Youth And The "Aging Out" Age In Rhode Island, Kelsey Creeden
Social Work Theses
Foster care is a temporary placement of children and youth with others outside of their home due to child abuse or neglect. Since its 19th century origins, the foster care system has evolved to focus on three goals of providing safety, well-being, and permanency until the child leaves the system, either by reunification, adoption, or “aging out”. Because these youth often “age out” without a home, job, or support system, programs such as the Life Skills Program and the Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative are working toward providing this population with skills that will assist them in successfully aging out …

The Lack Of Mental Health Professionals And Services For Children Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing, Kiley Morgart
Social Work Theses
Children who are deaf or hard of hearing are vulnerable to abuse and are not receiving proper care at an early age due to their parents’ negative reactions towards having a child who has a hearing impairment. The lack of proper care and their vulnerability to abuse puts these children at a high risk of not developing properly. A qualitative study was undertaken using interviews to find services/agencies that provide help to parents of children who are deaf or hard of hearing in Rhode Island. Findings indicate that there is a sufficient amount of service for parents but these parents …
Effective Interventions For Treating Superficial Self Mutilators, Maria Palladini
Effective Interventions For Treating Superficial Self Mutilators, Maria Palladini
Social Work Theses
Self-cutting is the most common form of self-mutilation in adolescents but there is insufficient knowledge as to which treatment methods to reduce self-mutilation are most effective. This exploration into the causes of self-cutting and the treatment interventions, such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), compares adolescents who had DBT treatment with those who have used other treatment methods. Research findings indicate that the average age of adolescents in treatment was 15 years old and had been in treatment at least one time prior. Adolescents in DBT treatment showed signs in reducing/stopping self-cutting behavior along with improving communication skills with caregivers. Implications …
