Utilizing Social Support To Conserve The Fighting Strength: Important Considerations For Military Social Workers, J. Camille Hall
J. Camille Hall, PhD., LCSW
This article is a continuation of a conference panel dialogue that focused on providing individualized, culturally responsible treatment of secondary traumatic stress (STS) for military social workers. Key aspects of the roles and responsibilities, professional and ethical challenges of military social workers and social work officers serve as focal points for understanding the importance of social support. This article discusses ways social support might help to moderate the impact of STS. The ‘‘buddy system’’ describes a culturally unique protective factor, which is a well-known and effective type of social support utilized throughout the military. This article provides valuable information on …

State Recognition Of Same-Sex Relationships And Preparations For End Of Life Among Lesbian And Gay Boomers, Brian Devries, Anne Mason, Jean Quam, Kimberly D. Acquaviva
State Recognition Of Same-Sex Relationships And Preparations For End Of Life Among Lesbian And Gay Boomers, Brian Devries, Anne Mason, Jean Quam, Kimberly D. Acquaviva
Kimberly D. Acquaviva, PhD, MSW
The authors compared 793 nonheterosexual baby boomers on their relationship status (single or in a civil union) and the state in which they lived (did or did not recognize same-sex civil unions). Analyses revealed patterns attributable to participants’ relationship status, state recognition, and the combination of these variables. Findings showed that state recognition of same-sex unions has an impact not only on nonheterosexual individuals’ current quality of life but also on their future plans and emotional responses to those plans. A lack of legal recognition requires nonheterosexuals to take greater action to ensure that their end-of-life wishes will be carried …
Archetypal Energies, The Emergence Of Obama As A Practical Idealist, And Global Transformation, Carroy U. Ferguson
Archetypal Energies, The Emergence Of Obama As A Practical Idealist, And Global Transformation, Carroy U. Ferguson
Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.
During this time of change, AHP and kindred spirits on the edge have important roles to play. We are the keepers and nurturers of a transformative and evolutionary Vision for Consciousness and a more humane world. At issue is what I will call the “psychic politics” for global transformation, nurtured by practical idealism and the Archetypal Energies. In other writings, I have described Archetypal Energies as Higher Vibrational Energies, operating deep within our individual and collective psyches, which have their own transcendent value, purpose, quality, and “voice”, unique to the individual. We experience them as “creative urges” to move us …

Future Orientation Of Adolescents In Foster Care: Relationship To Trauma, Mental Health, And Hiv Risk Behaviors, Peter Cabrera, Wendy Auslander, Michael Polgar
Future Orientation Of Adolescents In Foster Care: Relationship To Trauma, Mental Health, And Hiv Risk Behaviors, Peter Cabrera, Wendy Auslander, Michael Polgar
Elián P. Cabrera-Nguyen
Future orientation has been found to protect against risk behaviors in adolescents from diverse backgrounds. However, no studies have specifically examined future orientation as a potential protective factor against HIV risk behaviors in foster care adolescents. In this study, 343 foster care adolescents were interviewed about their future orientation, mental health, trauma histories, and cognitions related to HIV risk behaviors. Results indicated variability in future orientation, but there were no significant differences by race, gender, and age. Future orientation was significantly associated with mental health, trauma, HIV-related knowledge, attitudes, behavioral intentions, and number of sexual intercourse partners. Furthermore, externalizing behaviors …
An Examination Of The Persistence Of The Residual Child Welfare System In The United States: Addressing Charges Of Radical Theoretical Myopia With Implications For Social Work Practice, Peter Cabrera
Elián P. Cabrera-Nguyen
The United States follows what has been termed a residual approach to its public child welfare system. This article describes the residual model and contrasts it with the policies of other industrialized nations. It also explores the causes and persistence of the residual model in the United States through the lens of structural-functionalist theory. By doing so, this article attempts to respond to critics of structural social work who maintain that it is overly reliant on conflict theory and has nothing to offer in terms of distinct practice methods. Suggestions for a structurally informed social work practice are made.
And Some Of Us Are Braver, J. Camille Hall
And Some Of Us Are Braver, J. Camille Hall
J. Camille Hall, PhD., LCSW
African American women fulfill many roles within their family and community. Most notably, these women are often defined by their “strength” and rarely seen as “vulnerable”. Many African American women demonstrate strength as they struggle to maintain employment, raise children, nurture spouses and extended family, but these same women are at-risk for a higher rate of health and emotional problems. In this paper, the authors use relational cultural-, stress and coping- and lifespan theories, along with black feminist thought to discuss the interlocking effects of race, gender, and class regarding the psychological well-being of African American women 18-55 years old. …
The Differential Effects Of Concurrent Planning Practice Elements On Reunification And Adoption, Amy C. D’Andrade
The Differential Effects Of Concurrent Planning Practice Elements On Reunification And Adoption, Amy C. D’Andrade
Amy C. D’Andrade
Objective: The child welfare practice of concurrent planning attempts to shorten children's stays in foster care. There is very little quantitative research on concurrent planning's effects. This study examines the influence of concurrent planning practice elements (reunification prognosis, concurrent plan, full disclosure, and discussion of voluntary relinquishment) on reunification and adoption. Method: Using a sample of 885 children, an observational design, and statistical controls, children who received concurrent planning elements were compared to those who did not. Results: Findings show discussion of voluntary relinquishment to be positively associated with adoption and full disclosure to be negatively associated with reunification. Conclusions: …

Contributions Of Therapist Characteristics And Stability To Intensive In-Home Therapy Youth Outcomes, Johanna K.P. Greeson, Shenyang Guo, Richard P. Barth, Sarah Hurley, Jocelyn Sisson
Johanna K.P. Greeson, PhD, MSS, MLSP
Objective: This study examines the influence of therapist and youth characteristics on post-discharge outcomes from intensive in-home therapy. Method: Data for 1,416 youth and 412 therapists were obtained from a behavioral health services provider. The Huber–White method was used to account for nested data; ordered logistic regression was employed to assess outcomes. Results: Therapist gender and employment stability were significantly associated with youth outcomes. The likelihood of an undesirable outcome was significantly less for cases with female therapists. Conclusion: Findings underscore the need for additional study concerning the impact of therapist characteristics and stability on youth outcomes, and to improve …

Considerable research has suggested that homeownership imparts a variety of positive individual, family, neighborhood, and community effects. Yet, much of the research to date has failed to examine such effects by level of income [Dietz, R.D., & Haurin, D.R. (2003). The social and private micro-level consequences of homeownership. Journal of Urban Economics, 54(3), 401–450.]. This study adds to the limited research on the impact of assets on parental attitude and behavior among low- and moderate-income (LMI) families. Data used in this study are from the evaluation of Self-Help's Community Advantage Home Loan Secondary Market Program. Specifically, we focus on the …
