A rising demand for healthy and sustainably grown food has become a trend of our time. However, there is dissonance in contemporary awareness about where food comes from and where it ultimately ends up. Globally, one third of all food produced is never used. In the United States alone, approximately 55 million tons of food is discarded each year (Venkat, 2012). This is problematic because food waste has environmental, economic and social costs associated with it. As gerontologists may know, there are a great deal of studies and a variety of academic literature on the misuse of alcohol and prescription medication amongst the elderly population. While there is a plethora of information on alcohol and prescription misuse, there is little reported data about the prevalence of other substance misuse experienced by this population. This study aims to help to fill that gap in the data by using quantitative methods to describe the scope of substance abuse of individuals 55-years or older. This paper investigates whether there is or is not a correlation between feminine perceptions of Communications and the relevance of the major. One Hundred Cal Poly San Luis Obispo students were asked to complete a survey that included basic student demographics as well as if they have taken courses within the major or know anyone within it, their perceived relevance of the major, and whether they believed it to be for males or females.
